Choose the iPhone 18 Pro Max if you already rely on iOS or prioritize the strongest results in Tom’s Guide’s battery and performance tests; choose the Galaxy S26 Ultra if you want Android, a built-in S Pen, long-range 5x telephoto reach, or a screen privacy feature. Their U.S. 256GB launch prices were nearly identical, so ecosystem and the features you will actually use matter more than the launch-price difference. Check current local prices and offers before buying.

Start with the ecosystem you already use
Pick iPhone if your digital life is already Apple-centered
The iPhone 18 Pro Max runs iOS 27 and supports Apple Intelligence. If your everyday setup depends on Apple devices, services, accessories, or apps, staying with iPhone can avoid the friction of moving workflows and checking compatibility. Apple says Apple Intelligence availability depends on supported languages and regions; its presence on the phone does not guarantee every feature is available everywhere.
Pick Samsung if Android and Galaxy fit you better
The S26 Ultra launches with Android 16, One UI 8.5, and Galaxy AI. It is the more natural fit if your apps, services, and other devices are organized around Android or Galaxy. AI feature access can depend on region, language, account, and software updates, so check availability for the specific features you intend to use.

Camera choice: low-light results or dedicated 5x reach?
Where the iPhone has an edge
Apple lists a 48MP main camera with variable aperture for the iPhone 18 Pro line. In Tom’s Guide’s comparison, the outlet’s example photos favored the iPhone for low-light image clarity. That is a scene-specific review observation, not a guarantee that iPhone wins every night shot or camera comparison.

Where the Galaxy has an edge
Samsung lists four rear cameras, including a dedicated 50MP 5x telephoto. Tom’s Guide reported better reach from that dedicated 5x camera. If you often photograph distant subjects, that longer telephoto option may be more useful than a preference for close-range or low-light results.
Published megapixel counts describe hardware, not a universal ranking of image quality. Lighting, subject distance, settings, and your own taste all affect the result. For photos you care about, compare sample images from the kinds of scenes you actually shoot.

Display: Samsung adds side-view privacy
Both phones have 6.9-inch-class displays by their manufacturers’ rounded-corner measurement conventions. Samsung specifies a QHD+ Dynamic AMOLED 2X panel, adaptive refresh from 1 to 120Hz, and a 2,600-nit peak-brightness figure. Its standout practical difference is Privacy Display, a screen-integrated option that limits what people at side angles can see when it is enabled. Samsung says it can be configured for selected apps and situations.
Privacy Display is relevant if you regularly view messages, work documents, or account details on public transit, while travelling, or in a shared office. If side-view privacy is not a concern, it may not outweigh your preference for the other phone’s platform or camera experience.

Battery and speed: what one outlet’s tests say
In its 2026 comparison, Tom’s Guide reported 18 hours 27 minutes for the iPhone 18 Pro Max and 16 hours 40 minutes for the Galaxy S26 Ultra in its battery-drain test. Those are results under that publication’s test conditions, not promised runtimes for ordinary use. Brightness, signal, apps, settings, and workload can all change how long a phone lasts.
Tom’s Guide also reported these benchmark results:

The figures are the outlet’s review results, not a guarantee of performance in every app or sustained workload. Apple identifies the A20 Pro chip in the iPhone; Samsung lists Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy in the S26 Ultra. Apple describes the iPhone’s larger battery as its largest battery-life increase ever on iPhone, but that is Apple’s characterization; the comparative figures above come from Tom’s Guide’s test. See Tom’s Guide’s comparison for its test context and hands-on observations.
Storage, price, and value at checkout
At U.S. launch, Apple listed the 256GB iPhone 18 Pro Max at $1,299 and storage options up to 2TB. Samsung listed the 256GB Galaxy S26 Ultra at $1,299.99, with options up to 1TB. On the base-capacity launch models, the prices were effectively level; that does not establish which is better value at current checkout.
- Compare the same capacity, rather than a discounted base model against a larger-storage phone.
- Check your local currency, tax, stock, and retailer or carrier conditions.
- Calculate trade-in value and any promotion against the amount you must actually pay; offers can change and may have eligibility terms.
- If you need more than 1TB, Apple lists a 2TB option while Samsung’s cited U.S. launch configurations top out at 1TB.
Does the S Pen change the decision?
The Galaxy S26 Ultra includes a built-in S Pen, giving it a dedicated way to write, mark up, or work with content on screen. The iPhone does not match that built-in stylus utility. If you would use a pen regularly, Samsung has a practical advantage; if you would leave it in its slot, it should not decide the purchase.
Which one should you buy?
Buy the iPhone 18 Pro Max if…
- You prefer iOS or depend on Apple devices and services.
- You value the iPhone’s low-light examples in Tom’s Guide’s comparison and its camera workflow.
- You want the higher results reported in Tom’s Guide’s battery-drain and benchmark tests, while recognizing that tests do not predict every person’s experience.
- You want a listed 2TB storage configuration.
Buy the Galaxy S26 Ultra if…
- You prefer Android, One UI, or the Galaxy ecosystem.
- You want the dedicated 5x telephoto reach highlighted in Tom’s Guide’s comparison.
- You will use the built-in S Pen or Samsung’s side-view Privacy Display.
- You prefer Samsung’s display specifications and can confirm that its current price and storage configuration suit your budget.
Because the U.S. launch prices were nearly the same, there is no price-based universal winner. Make the final call based on platform fit and the features you will use, then verify current local offers for the capacity you want.
