What is the iPhone 18 Pro Max connectivity issue?
Apple said it identified an issue affecting a “small number” of iPhone 18 Pro Max users on AT&T. It can cause loss of cellular service and prevent calls. Reports and an AT&T customer warning also describe failed texts and mobile data; the warning said even 911 calls might fail. The reports do not establish that other iPhone models or carriers are affected. MacRumors reported Apple’s description on October 2, 2026, while its AT&T coverage included the customer warning.
Some users reported an SOS status and continued loss of connection after updating to iOS 27.0.1. Those accounts document individual experiences, not the number of affected phones or a confirmed explanation for the failure.
Does iOS 27.0.1 fix a phone that has already lost service?
No. Apple’s reported guidance distinguishes prevention from recovery: iOS 27.0.1 and an AT&T carrier settings update are intended to help prevent the issue from occurring, but software cannot reactivate service on a device already affected. Apple says affected devices need replacement. 9to5Mac quoted Apple’s explanation of the updates; MacRumors reported the replacement guidance.

What to do, depending on your phone’s status
If your iPhone still has cellular service
- Install iOS 27.0.1.
- Accept an AT&T carrier settings update if prompted. To check manually, open Settings > General > About and wait briefly for any carrier update prompt, as reported by MacRumors.
Apple describes these updates as preventive measures, not a guarantee that every phone is unaffected. The reported automatic carrier-settings rollout could take up to 14 days; that was an expected rollout window, not a permanent timing guarantee. 9to5Mac reported Apple’s update guidance and rollout information.
If your iPhone has already lost service or shows SOS
Contact Apple Support or AT&T, or visit an Apple Store or AT&T location, to ask about replacement. Because Apple says software cannot restore service to devices already affected, do not rely on another update or routine troubleshooting as the remedy.

If you cannot make a call, including an emergency call, use another working phone or another available way to contact emergency services. AT&T’s reported warning said calls, texts and data, including 911 calls, might fail on affected devices.

- Confirmed in company statements reported by news outlets: Apple identified the issue, recommended iOS 27.0.1 for iPhone 18 Pro Max users, and said it was issuing a carrier settings update to help prevent the issue. AT&T said it was working with Apple and urged owners of the affected model to update.
- Not disclosed: Apple has not provided a root cause or an exact affected-device count. “Small number” is a qualitative description, not a statistic.
- Unconfirmed: GSMArena speculated that a difference between the Qualcomm modem in the U.S. Pro Max and the C2 modem in the smaller Pro could be relevant. That is a hypothesis, not a diagnosis from Apple.
- Anecdotal only: Social posts describe individual connection failures and troubleshooting attempts; they cannot establish prevalence or explain the cause.
GSMArena’s October 2, 2026 report covered user reports after iOS 27.0.1. Neither those reports nor the company statements cited above establish a broader failure across iPhones or carriers.
