A leaker says Apple once planned 16GB of RAM for the iPhone 18 Pro lineup and iPhone Duo, but that figure is not an Apple-confirmed specification. MacRumors reports that Xcode 27 indicates 12GB for iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max; the Duo’s 12GB capacity remains an expectation based on separate reporting, not that Xcode check.
What is the 16GB RAM claim?
In a report published October 6, 2026, MacRumors attributed the claim to the leaker known as Instant Digital: Apple initially planned 16GB of RAM for the iPhone 18 Pro lineup and iPhone Duo. The report does not say when Apple supposedly considered that capacity, and it does not present an Apple document or confirmation. Treat 16GB as a reported earlier plan, not a final specification.

How does the claim compare with the reported configurations?
| Device or claim | RAM figure | Evidence described in the report |
| Alleged earlier plan for iPhone 18 Pro lineup and iPhone Duo | 16GB | Attributed to Instant Digital; the report does not give a date for the alleged plan or cite Apple confirmation. |
| iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max | 12GB | MacRumors says Xcode 27 data indicates this capacity; the report says it matches iPhone 17 Pro models. |
| iPhone Duo | 12GB expected | Prior supply-chain reporting, including a report that Samsung would supply 12GB modules; the cited Xcode check did not include Duo. |
The 12GB figure for the Pro models and the alleged 16GB earlier plan have different evidence behind them. In particular, the Duo’s expected 12GB should not be described as confirmed by Xcode.
Why might Apple have moved away from 16GB?
MacRumors points to a global memory shortage as a likely explanation. Its report also cites rising prices for 12GB modules, Bloomberg reporting that memory costs led Apple to discuss a higher starting price for the foldable, and analyst Ming-Chi Kuo’s statement that DRAM shortages were forcing Apple to scale back 2026 hardware shipment plans.
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- When you receive the phone, insert a SIM card from a compatible carrier. Then, turn it on, connect to Wi-Fi, and follow the on screen prompts to activate service.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charger and charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
That context makes supply and cost pressure plausible, but it does not establish Apple’s internal reason for selecting 12GB rather than 16GB. The reported explanation is not a confirmed account of the company’s decision.

These are configuration claims, not performance results. The report provides no benchmark or tested experience showing how a 16GB version would perform compared with a 12GB version. RAM figures alone therefore do not establish a meaningful speed, battery-life, or multitasking difference between the reported devices.
