Short answer: The metalens Face ID story was a genuine pre-launch rumor, not a confirmed iPhone 17 Pro Max feature. Apple’s specifications confirm Dynamic Island and TrueDepth Face ID, while post-launch hands-on reports found the familiar pill-shaped cutout rather than a clearly smaller one.
What the original rumor actually claimed
The headline combined three separate claims that were often treated as one:
- Apple would use a metalens in part of the Face ID system.
- The optical redesign would combine or reduce the size of transmitter and receiver components.
- That smaller package would let Apple narrow the visible Dynamic Island.
Analyst Jeff Pu first associated the technology with the iPhone 17 Pro Max in a 2024 prediction (MacRumors). Digital Chat Station made a similar Pro Max claim in February 2025 (MacRumors). Neither report was an Apple confirmation.
What “metalens” means here
A metalens is an ultra-thin, flat optical element that uses nanoscale structures to manipulate light, rather than relying only on conventional curved glass or plastic lenses. In this rumor, it referred to the optical arrangement of specific Face ID or proximity-sensing components—not the removal of the TrueDepth system and not automatically an under-display Face ID system.

Why a metalens could have made the island smaller
The reported engineering theory was that a more compact optical arrangement could reduce the thickness and footprint of infrared transmitter and receiver hardware. That might give Apple more flexibility when placing the front camera and Face ID parts beneath the display opening, potentially allowing a narrower cutout (9to5Mac).
That mechanism was speculative. Even if an internal optical component became smaller, Apple could retain the same visible opening for camera alignment, manufacturing tolerances, acoustics, software layout or industrial-design consistency. A smaller component and a smaller Dynamic Island are therefore different claims.
How the rumor changed before launch
The story did not remain a Pro Max-only prediction. In May 2025, Jeff Pu reportedly extended the metalens claim to all four models: iPhone 17, iPhone Air, iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max (MacRumors). That made a Pro Max-specific headline less useful, because the alleged redesign was no longer presented as an exclusive feature.
There was also a direct contradiction. Ming-Chi Kuo reported in January 2025 that the Dynamic Island would remain largely unchanged across the iPhone 17 family (MacRumors; 9to5Mac). Multiple rumor reports are not the same as independent confirmation, especially when they originate from analyst notes and leaker channels rather than Apple documentation.

What Apple actually shipped
Apple announced the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max on September 9, 2025 (Apple Newsroom). Apple’s technical specifications list a Dynamic Island and Face ID through TrueDepth technology, including the Center Stage front-camera system (Apple specifications; Apple Support).

Those official pages do not mention metalens technology, a redesigned Face ID optical package or a reduced display cutout. Apple has not publicly confirmed the metalens claim in the cited launch materials. That is different from saying Apple denied it: the public documentation simply does not disclose the internal optical construction.
Did the Dynamic Island visibly shrink?
Available post-launch observations point to no obvious major reduction. TechRadar’s early iPhone 17 Pro hands-on report said the Dynamic Island was “not smaller” (TechRadar). Its iPhone 17 Pro Max review described the front as being interrupted by the familiar pill-shaped Dynamic Island containing the Center Stage camera and Face ID sensors (TechRadar).
This evidence addresses the consumer-visible promise, not every internal part. A component-level teardown could theoretically reveal an optical change that produces no external difference. What the available product documentation and reviews do not show is a substantially smaller island that buyers can clearly see.

Do not confuse metalens with under-display Face ID
Metalens optics could make selected Face ID hardware thinner or more compact. That is not the same as placing the complete Face ID system beneath the display. Under-screen Face ID is a separate, more ambitious display-integration claim discussed in future iPhone reporting (MacRumors Face ID guide).
Reports about possible display changes on the iPhone 18 Pro generation should therefore be treated as a different rumor chain, not proof that the iPhone 17 claim came true (MacRumors).

What about the alleged 1.5-centimeter cutout?
A September 2025 report cited an alleged cutout width of about 1.5 cm, compared with 2 cm on the iPhone 16, based on an unverified screen-protector contact. The same report warned readers to treat the measurement skeptically (MacRumors). It should not be treated as an Apple specification or used to size a case or screen protector.
Should the rumor affect an upgrade decision?
If a smaller Dynamic Island is your main reason to buy the iPhone 17 Pro Max, the evidence does not support that purchase rationale. Treat the front cutout as broadly familiar and evaluate confirmed differences—such as the Pro platform, display, cameras, battery and performance—rather than an unverified optical redesign.
- Choose iPhone 17 Pro Max if you specifically want its larger display and battery capacity and accept the familiar Dynamic Island.
- Choose iPhone 17 Pro if you want the Pro hardware in a smaller body.
- Choose iPhone 17 if current-generation features matter more than the Pro Max form factor.
- Keep an iPhone 15 Pro or 16 Pro if the only attraction was a smaller cutout; the released 17 Pro Max does not clearly deliver that visible change.
Check Apple’s live purchase page for current regional pricing and trade-in values rather than relying on launch-era figures (iPhone 17 Pro Max; Apple Trade In). If you buy one, use a case or screen protector explicitly labeled for the released iPhone 17 Pro Max, not one based on pre-launch cutout measurements.
Bottom line
The iPhone 17 Pro Max metalens story was a credible-sounding pre-release rumor that never became an Apple-confirmed specification. Apple shipped a phone with Dynamic Island and TrueDepth Face ID, and early reviews found the visible pill-shaped cutout broadly unchanged. Internal optical revisions remain possible, but the promised smaller Dynamic Island was not clearly delivered.
