The iPhone 16 Pro Max is a conventional large-screen phone; Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold8 adds a second, larger display that opens like a book. The choice comes down to whether you value the iPhone’s dedicated 5x telephoto camera and standard phone design, or the Fold8’s expandable inner screen. In the cited U.S. price references, the Fold8’s listed starting price is $700.99 above the iPhone’s launch MSRP—but those figures are not a current, like-for-like retailer quote.

Specifications come from Apple, Samsung, and Tom’s Guide. Apple’s battery figure is a manufacturer playback estimate, while the Fold8 result is one publisher’s web-browsing test; they are different measures and should not be read as a direct battery-life comparison.

Which screen arrangement works better?
iPhone: one large display in a familiar shape
The iPhone 16 Pro Max gives you one 6.9-inch display in a conventional smartphone body. Its OLED panel has a 2868 × 1320 resolution and supports up to 120Hz ProMotion, according to Apple. That makes it the simpler fit if you want a large screen without unfolding the device or switching between two display sizes.

Fold8: a compact cover display plus a larger workspace
The Fold8’s 5.5-inch cover display handles use while the phone is closed; open it to access the 7.6-inch inner display. That inner panel offers more screen area for reading, multitasking, or viewing content, but its diagonal measurement does not mean it behaves like a conventional 7.6-inch phone. The cover screen is smaller than the iPhone’s single display, and the Fold8’s appeal depends on whether you will regularly use the unfolded layout. Samsung lists the standard Fold8 separately from the Fold8 Ultra, which has different display dimensions.

Camera trade-off: optical reach versus listed resolution
Apple specifies a 48MP main camera, a 48MP ultrawide, and a 12MP telephoto camera with 5x optical zoom on the iPhone 16 Pro Max. Tom’s Guide reports that the standard Galaxy Z Fold8 has two 50MP rear cameras and no telephoto lens. Megapixel counts alone do not determine image quality, but the hardware distinction is useful: the iPhone has a dedicated 5x telephoto option, while the Fold8 does not have a listed telephoto camera in the cited review.

Durability and battery figures need context
Water and dust protection
Apple rates the iPhone 16 Pro Max IP68 under IEC 60529 and says its controlled laboratory test reached up to 6m of water for 30 minutes. Tom’s Guide reports an IP48 rating for the Fold8. These ratings describe specified test conditions; neither means a phone is immune to damage, and the ratings should not be treated as a guarantee against every exposure or accident.

Battery claims are not directly comparable
Apple’s “up to 33 hours” figure is its video-playback estimate, with actual results varying by configuration, settings, and use. Samsung lists the Fold8 battery capacity as 4,800mAh. Tom’s Guide recorded 12 hours 19 minutes for the Fold8 in its own 5G web-browsing test. Capacity, a manufacturer playback estimate, and one publisher’s browsing test describe different things; the Fold8 test result is not a general guarantee of daily endurance.
