The Galaxy S26 Ultra and iPhone 16 Pro Max both have 6.9-inch displays, but they differ in camera hardware, software, stylus support and price. At U.S. launch, Samsung’s 256GB Galaxy started at $1,299.99, while Apple’s 256GB iPhone launched at $1,199—a $100.99 gap. Those are historical launch prices, not current offers; the comparison below separates the models’ specifications from what their launch prices do and do not tell you.
iPhone 16 Pro Max vs Galaxy S26 Ultra: specifications at a glance
| Specification | iPhone 16 Pro Max | Galaxy S26 Ultra |
|---|---|---|
| Display | 6.9-inch Super Retina XDR | 6.9-inch QHD+ Dynamic AMOLED 2X; adaptive 1–120Hz refresh rate. Samsung notes that rounded corners reduce the viewable area compared with a full rectangle. |
| Rear cameras | 48MP Fusion main, 48MP Ultra Wide, 12MP 5x Telephoto | 200MP wide, 50MP ultra-wide, 50MP 5x telephoto, 10MP 3x telephoto |
| Battery information | Apple rates video playback at up to 33 hours | 5,000mAh typical capacity; Samsung cites 4,855mAh rated minimum capacity |
| Charging information | MagSafe wireless charging up to 25W with a 30W-or-higher adapter; Qi2 up to 15W | Samsung claims up to 75% charge in 30 minutes with Super Fast Charging 3.0 |
| Software | iOS | Android 16 with One UI 8.5 in Samsung’s U.S. launch material |
| Distinctive features | USB-C with USB 3 data transfer up to 10Gb/s using a compatible USB 3 cable | Built-in S Pen and Privacy Display |
| Dimensions and weight | 163.0 × 77.6 × 8.25 mm; 227 g, according to PhoneArena’s listing | 78.1 × 163.6 × 7.9 mm; 214 g, according to Samsung |
Specifications are not a substitute for a controlled comparison. Apple’s playback estimate and Samsung’s battery-capacity and charging claims use different measures, so they do not establish which phone lasts longer in everyday use. Likewise, camera megapixel counts alone cannot establish which phone takes better pictures.

How the camera systems differ
iPhone: a three-camera setup
Apple lists a 48MP main Fusion camera, a 48MP Ultra Wide and a 12MP 5x Telephoto. That gives the iPhone a clear long-range telephoto option alongside its main and wide-angle cameras.
Samsung: more listed focal-length options
Samsung’s hardware list includes a 200MP wide camera, 50MP ultra-wide, 50MP 5x telephoto and 10MP 3x telephoto. The additional listed telephoto camera gives the S26 Ultra a distinct hardware configuration, but it does not by itself prove better image quality.
#1 Best Overall
- The large 6.9-inch display combines ProMotion 120Hz technology with advanced color calibration, giving movies, games, and productivity apps a spacious, crisp, and fluid visual experience that’s ideal for multitasking or immersive media consumption.
Samsung describes its 2x and 10x zoom options as “optical quality.” These are computational or sensor-derived results, not dedicated optical zoom levels; distinguish them from the listed 3x and 5x telephoto cameras. Neither manufacturer’s specifications settle how the two phones compare in real-world photos or video.
Display, battery and charging: what the figures mean
Both phones have a listed 6.9-inch diagonal display. Samsung specifies QHD+ resolution, Dynamic AMOLED 2X and adaptive refresh from 1Hz to 120Hz. Its listed diagonal is measured as a full rectangle, and the rounded corners make the viewable area smaller. Apple identifies the iPhone panel as Super Retina XDR; the supplied specifications do not provide a matching refresh-rate figure for a direct rate comparison.

For battery, Apple says the iPhone 16 Pro Max supports up to 33 hours of video playback. Samsung gives the S26 Ultra a typical capacity of 5,000mAh and a rated minimum of 4,855mAh. These figures describe different things, and Apple’s playback rating is not directly comparable to Samsung’s capacity numbers. Samsung also claims up to 75% charge in 30 minutes with Super Fast Charging 3.0; treat that as a manufacturer claim, not an independently measured head-to-head result.

U.S. launch prices and storage tiers
The price gap depends on the storage configuration being compared. Samsung announced a U.S. starting launch price for the Galaxy S26 Ultra; PhoneArena lists historical U.S. iPhone 16 Pro Max launch MSRP by storage. The iPhone figures are secondary-source launch-price context, not live pricing.
| Storage | iPhone 16 Pro Max U.S. launch MSRP | Galaxy S26 Ultra U.S. launch price |
|---|---|---|
| 256GB | $1,199 (PhoneArena listing) | $1,299.99 starting price (Samsung, February 25, 2026 announcement) |
| 512GB | $1,399 (PhoneArena listing) | Not stated in the cited Samsung U.S. launch announcement |
| 1TB | $1,599 (PhoneArena listing) | Not stated in the cited Samsung U.S. launch announcement |
On the 256GB launch configurations, Samsung’s announced starting price was $100.99 higher. Do not extend that difference to other storage tiers: the cited Samsung announcement gives a starting price, not prices for its 512GB and 1TB versions. These historical figures also do not show today’s unlocked prices, carrier installments, trade-in-adjusted costs or active promotions.

Which phone makes more sense for you?
Choose around the software and ecosystem you want
The most consequential everyday distinction is iOS versus Android 16 with One UI 8.5 on the Galaxy’s U.S. launch software. Consider the apps, devices and services you already rely on, and whether you want to stay in that ecosystem. The specifications alone cannot decide which operating system is a better fit for you.
Best Value
- The larger 6.9-inch display enhances productivity and media consumption, giving extra room for multitasking, side-by-side apps, and immersive viewing without feeling unwieldy in hand.
- Camera improvements focus on ultra-wide performance, capturing more detail at the edges of the frame and reducing distortion, making landscape shots, group photos, and architecture photography cleaner.
- Refined gesture controls and haptic feedback make interactions feel more precise, so scrolling, tapping, or switching between apps is smoother and more satisfying compared to previous Plus models.
- Audio enhancements optimize speaker output for spatial awareness, delivering clearer separation between instruments and voices in music, video playback, and FaceTime calls without relying on headphones.
- Durable yet lightweight materials balance heft and portability, with a subtly textured back and reinforced edges that improve grip while maintaining the premium appearance expected from the Plus series.
Give Samsung’s S Pen and Privacy Display practical weight
The Galaxy S26 Ultra has a built-in S Pen and Privacy Display—features not listed for the iPhone 16 Pro Max. If you regularly use a stylus or value the Samsung privacy feature, those are concrete reasons to favor its feature set. Their value depends on whether you will use them.
Match the cameras to the shots you take
Compare the listed camera hardware against your habits: the iPhone has a 5x telephoto, while Samsung lists both 3x and 5x telephoto cameras as well as a 200MP wide camera. Do not pick a winner from megapixel counts or zoom labels alone; the specifications here do not establish which model produces better real-world images.
Consider weight, storage and the price you can actually pay
PhoneArena lists the iPhone at 227g, while Samsung specifies 214g for the S26 Ultra. That secondary listing makes the iPhone heavier on paper, although the difference is modest and the measurement sources differ. Choose storage based on your needs, then compare current prices for the same capacity in the same market. Launch MSRP is useful historical context, not a substitute for a current quote.
