Samsung Display and LG Display were reported to have received Apple approval to produce OLED panels for the iPhone 16 Pro. The reports described a multi-supplier arrangement, not an exclusive contract or a public Apple announcement. Samsung was expected to supply more panels across the iPhone 16 family, while LG was reported to supply the Pro models. Apple has not published the exact supplier split or panel quantities.
What “secured display production” means
In reports from late May and early June 2024, “secured” meant the display makers had received Apple’s approval to manufacture panels for the iPhone 16 lineup. It did not mean either company won exclusive rights, built the complete phone, or guaranteed that every Pro unit would use its panel.
The suppliers were Samsung Display and LG Display, panel manufacturers affiliated with larger corporate groups. This is not the same as saying Samsung Electronics’ phone business supplied or assembled the iPhone. Display panels are components delivered for integration by Apple’s manufacturing partners.
Apple’s public specifications confirm the iPhone 16 Pro’s display features but do not name its panel supplier. The supplier allocations below therefore reflect industry reporting, not an Apple-published bill of materials.

Which iPhone 16 models were linked to each supplier?

These model allocations were reported by ETNews and The Elec. The reports do not establish a fixed share for each supplier in every model, factory, region, or production batch. BOE was not initially reported as approved for the main iPhone 16 lineup in the same way, but that does not prove it was permanently excluded from every model or later production period.
Reported panel estimates
Industry estimates reported about 90 million panels for Samsung Display and 43 million for LG Display, or roughly 130 million combined for the broader iPhone 16 lineup. These are reported estimates, not Apple-confirmed totals or a precise count of iPhone 16 Pro panels. ITHome and ETNews covered the figures.
When production was expected to start
Reports ahead of launch said initial panel production was expected to begin in June 2024, with suppliers ramping up during the summer before the iPhone 16 family’s September launch. That schedule was a production forecast reported at the time, not a public Apple confirmation. MacRumors covered the expected June start, and TrendForce later reported on the ramp-up.

Why Apple used more than one OLED supplier
Apple has not publicly stated its specific reasons for the iPhone 16 allocation. Using multiple qualified suppliers can, as a supply-chain strategy, increase available capacity, reduce reliance on one manufacturer, provide backup if a supplier encounters yield or quality problems, and give Apple more flexibility in assigning panels to different models. It may also strengthen Apple’s negotiating position, though the reports do not establish the commercial terms.

Why the Pro display was challenging to make
Before supplier approval, reporting described production challenges tied to the iPhone 16 Pro’s very thin bezels and a display-routing approach called Border Reduction Structure (BRS). In simple terms, BRS is intended to reduce the space needed around the display. Making that design at Apple’s required production rates can make manufacturing more demanding: suppliers must meet the physical design and quality requirements while achieving sufficient yield. 9to5Mac reported on the thin-bezel challenge.

This context helps explain why approval mattered: suppliers had to qualify panels for a tightly specified design and then produce them at scale. Public reporting does not disclose Apple’s precise qualification thresholds or either supplier’s yield.

Can buyers choose a Samsung or LG panel?
No. Apple does not offer a supplier choice when buying an iPhone 16 Pro. A unit’s panel source may depend on model, production batch, factory allocation, region, and component availability; the public evidence does not establish the supplier in a specific retail unit. A replacement display obtained through Apple or an authorized repair channel may also follow a different sourcing path from the original factory-installed screen.
Do not treat an informal panel identifier or third-party diagnostic app as definitive proof of manufacturer unless its identification method has been independently validated. Online owner reports about tint, calibration, or viewing angles are anecdotal and do not establish a consistent supplier difference. There is no reliable public evidence establishing that Samsung Display or LG Display consistently provides a visibly superior iPhone 16 Pro panel across units. Supplier identity, measured performance, and perceived appearance are separate questions: calibration, software, viewing angle, and ordinary unit variation can all affect what someone sees. Claims that one supplier is consistently brighter, warmer, sharper, or more power-efficient require controlled comparisons of multiple units under identical conditions; anecdotal reports do not establish those claims.

For a buyer, screen condition and how the actual phone looks matter more than an unverified supplier code. When buying used or refurbished, assess the display for uniformity and defects, and consider the device’s warranty, return period, battery condition, storage, and carrier compatibility.
What the supplier news does—and does not—tell buyers
The 2024 reports establish a credible account of Apple approving Samsung Display and LG Display to make OLED panels for the iPhone 16 Pro line. They do not establish the supplier in an individual phone, a permanent allocation ratio, Apple’s prices or quality thresholds, or a supplier-specific advantage in battery life or image quality. Later industry estimates may also describe different measures: for example, UBI Research later estimated that LG supplied about 42 million iPhone 16-series panels in 2024, a retrospective estimate that should not be conflated with the earlier forecast of 43 million.
