The iPhone 15 Pro Max is worth considering if you want a large-screen iPhone with a 5x optical telephoto camera and USB-C data-transfer capability. Its main trade-offs are the 6.7-inch-class size and the uncertainty of buying a several-year-old phone at today’s local price. Check the specific unit’s condition, battery health, repair history, storage and warranty before deciding.
What makes the iPhone 15 Pro Max different?
Apple announced the iPhone 15 Pro Max on September 12, 2023, and availability began September 22. It launched in the United States with 256GB of storage at $1,199, with 512GB and 1TB configurations also offered. That is historical launch pricing, not a current market price. Apple’s launch announcement describes the phone’s defining hardware: a 6.7-inch-class display, a 48MP main camera, a 5x optical telephoto camera and a customizable Action button.

5x telephoto reach
The Pro Max’s 120mm-equivalent telephoto lens provides 5x optical reach. That is the clearest reason to choose it over the iPhone 15 Pro, which Apple specified with a 3x telephoto camera. The extra reach can help frame distant subjects without relying as heavily on digital zoom; it is a hardware advantage, not a guarantee of a particular image quality in every scene.
Main camera flexibility
Apple specified a 48MP main camera and introduced a 24MP default capture option, alongside selectable 24mm, 28mm and 35mm framing. Those options make the main camera more adaptable than a single fixed framing, while the 5x lens serves subjects farther away. These are Apple’s product specifications, not independent test results.

USB-C and the Action button
The USB-C port supports USB 3 data transfer at up to 10Gb/s according to Apple. This can be useful when moving large video files to compatible equipment, but the port shape alone does not ensure that speed: the cable and connected accessories must support the required data standard. The Action button is a configurable physical control that can be assigned to a chosen function.
What are the main drawbacks?
It is a large phone
The 6.7-inch-class format gives more room for viewing and composing shots, but it may be awkward for one-handed use or small pockets. Handling preference is personal; try the phone in person if size is a concern.

Titanium reduces weight, not fragility
Apple presented the titanium design as making this the lightest Pro lineup at launch. Macworld found the reduction noticeable, but not revolutionary, and cautioned that the frame was not thereby more resistant to scratches or dents. Titanium is not a reason to treat the phone as indestructible. Macworld’s review also reported no charging-speed improvement over the iPhone 14 Pro Max; that is the reviewer’s comparison, not a complete battery-life assessment.

| Feature | iPhone 15 Pro Max | iPhone 15 Pro |
|---|---|---|
| Telephoto camera | 5x optical, 120mm equivalent | 3x optical |

Apple’s launch announcement is the source for the camera and base-storage comparison. The Pro Max makes more sense if the extra telephoto reach, larger display or 256GB starting capacity matters to you. If you prefer a smaller phone and do not need the 5x camera, weigh those priorities against the Pro Max’s size and actual price.
How to judge a unit at today’s price
No current local price or inventory is established here, so the 2023 U.S. launch price cannot tell you whether a particular used or refurbished listing is good value. Compare like-for-like storage and condition, and use these checks before committing:

Verdict: who should buy it?
Consider the iPhone 15 Pro Max if you specifically want the 5x telephoto camera, prefer a large display, or have a USB-C video and data workflow that benefits from USB 3 transfers. Its 256GB launch base storage may also suit buyers who need more room than the iPhone 15 Pro’s 128GB launch base.

Look elsewhere if one-handed handling is a priority, if the 5x camera is not useful to you, or if the asking price does not make sense after accounting for battery health, condition, repairs and warranty. The phone’s strengths are specific; whether they justify its size and present-day cost depends on the unit and the price available in your market.
