iPadOS 18.4 Beta 2 is here with a major change to the way iPad handles email: an all-new Mail experience. If you rely on Mail daily—work, school, or personal accounts—this update is worth evaluating, but you’ll want to install it with care.
This guide covers what Beta 2 likely changes in real use, how to install safely, and how to validate the Mail experience immediately after updating. You’ll also get practical troubleshooting steps for the issues that tend to show up in iPadOS betas.
What iPadOS 18.4 Beta 2 brings (and what to watch)
Beta releases are designed to refine features and shake out edge cases. The headline for iPadOS 18.4 Beta 2 is the new Mail experience, plus additional tuning that usually includes bug fixes, stability improvements, and performance work.
The all-new Mail experience: the practical impact
Apple’s Mail changes typically affect three areas: how messages are displayed, how actions behave (swipe, archive, delete, flags), and how the app fetches/syncs mail across accounts. Beta 2 is your chance to confirm those behaviors on your exact setup.

- Search: Run a few known searches (sender name, subject keyword) to confirm results are consistent.
- Notifications: Confirm how new messages surface, especially if you use Focus or notification previews.
If you use multiple accounts (Apple iCloud plus Google Workspace or Microsoft Exchange), validate each mailbox and account type. Beta changes often show up first on the more complex setups.
Other beta improvements: performance, stability, and security fixes
Beyond Mail, iPadOS betas generally include fixes that improve responsiveness, reduce app crashes, and patch security issues. You won’t always see these in release notes, but you’ll feel them in day-to-day use—especially after sleep/wake cycles and background syncing.
For best signal, compare battery usage and Mail sync behavior before and after the update. If anything seems worse, you’ll want to troubleshoot early rather than waiting weeks.
Prerequisites before you install iPadOS 18.4 Beta 2
Check device compatibility
Make sure your iPad model is supported by iPadOS 18.4 betas. Compatibility depends on Apple’s supported device list for that iPadOS release line.
Practical check: open Settings > General > About and note your model. Then confirm it appears in Apple’s supported-device list for the beta program you’re using.
Back up your iPad the right way
Before installing any beta, create a backup you can actually restore from. If you rely on iCloud-only workflows, still verify that a full backup exists.
- Option A: iCloud backup (good for convenience)
- Option B: computer backup (often more reliable when restoring)
In iCloud: go to Settings > Your Name > iCloud > iCloud Backup and tap Back Up Now.

How to install iPadOS 18.4 Beta 2
Installation depends on how you enrolled. Most people install over-the-air, but a computer-based method is useful if OTA fails.
Method 1: Over-the-air via Settings
- Open Settings.
- Tap General.
- Tap Software Update.
- If you’re in the beta program, you may see a beta update available instead of (or ahead of) the public version.
- Tap Download and Install.
- Enter your passcode if prompted, then agree to terms.
- Keep your iPad connected to power until installation completes and it reboots.
If you don’t see Beta 2, verify you’re enrolled on the correct channel (and that the correct Apple ID is signed in). The beta program is account-bound, not device-bound.
Method 2: Using a computer (recovery path)
If OTA keeps failing, use a computer-based restore/update route. This is more involved, but it can be the fastest way to get you onto the correct software state.
- Use a Mac or Windows PC with the required Apple software support (commonly Apple device tools).
- Connect the iPad using a reliable USB cable.
- Follow the computer tool prompts to update or, if needed, restore using the appropriate iPadOS 18.4 beta image path.
- After the install, sign in and allow Mail to sync before judging performance.
Because recovery workflows vary by tool version and OS version, follow the on-screen steps exactly. If you restore, you may need to reconfigure Mail accounts and settings depending on how your data was brought back.
After installation: set up and validate the Mail experience
Once you’re on iPadOS 18.4 Beta 2, don’t assume everything is correct—verify the behaviors you rely on. This is where betas either feel like a win or become a headache.

Turn on the right accounts and sync options
- Open Settings.
- Tap Mail.
- Select each account that matters to you.
- Confirm sync is enabled (for Mail fetching/push behavior, depending on account type).
For iCloud Mail, verify it’s enabled under the iCloud account settings. For Exchange/Google accounts, make sure credentials are still valid after the update (password changes can break sync).
Verify default Mail behaviors
Use a short checklist to confirm the new experience matches your expectations:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Reply threading looks correct (where supported by your account).
- Swipe actions perform what you expect (archive vs delete vs mark unread).
- Attachments open quickly and inline previews still work.
- Rules, VIPs, or mailbox-specific filters (if used) still behave correctly.
If anything feels “off,” compare one mailbox at a time. Multi-account setups can mask the root cause.
Re-train your workflow: inbox, search, and notification habits
Test these in the first day:
- Inbox search: Search for a sender and subject you know exists.
- Recent vs archived: Move a test email to another mailbox and confirm it stays there.
- Notification previews: Confirm your preview style and banner settings.
Beta changes can be subtle. If your muscle memory doesn’t match the new UI behavior, you’ll mis-send or mis-archive until you adjust.
Common issues in iPadOS betas (and how to fix them)
Most beta problems fall into predictable categories: sync delays, UI action mismatches, notification timing, and performance spikes. Here are practical fixes you can try in order.
Mail won’t send or stuck in Outbox
- Check network: switch Wi‑Fi on/off or change networks.
- Toggle Mail fetch: go to Settings > Mail and disable/enable the account briefly.
- Restart the iPad (hold a power button, then reboot) and retry sending.
- Sign out/in for the affected account if the provider supports it.
Also verify that you’re not over quota on the mailbox. Some accounts reject new messages once storage is full, and the error surfaced by clients can be inconsistent in betas.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Mail fetch delays or missing new messages
- Verify Fetch settings for each account under Settings > Mail.
- Confirm Focus modes aren’t suppressing notifications (including scheduled Focus).
- Give Mail time to finish its first sync after the update. Background indexing can take hours.
- Check storage: low free space can slow sync and indexing.
If only one account is affected (for example, Google or Exchange but not iCloud), concentrate troubleshooting on that account’s credentials and sync configuration.

Search returns fewer results than before
Mail search in betas can be temporarily incomplete while indexing catches up.
- Wait for background indexing to finish (leave the iPad charging and on Wi‑Fi).
- Try a broader query: search by a single keyword rather than a full subject phrase.
- Reboot and re-test after indexing time has passed.
- If the issue persists, test search in one mailbox only to isolate where indexing is failing.
Notifications don’t match expected delivery
- Check Settings > Notifications > Mail and ensure notifications are enabled.
- Confirm the account’s notification behavior hasn’t changed (some setups use mailbox-specific notification categories).
- Verify banner/alert style and lock screen settings match how you want mail to appear.
- Turn off Focus temporarily and test a known incoming message.
If you’re using multiple email apps or third-party clients, test notifications from Mail first to isolate whether the issue is inside iOS notification routing or account syncing.
Battery drain after update
After a major iPadOS update, background work (indexing, syncing, photo/credential revalidation) can cause temporary drain.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Check battery usage by app in Settings > Battery.
- Let the iPad sit on Wi‑Fi and power to complete background tasks.
- Reduce unnecessary widgets and live updates if you see Mail-related spikes.
- If battery drain is extreme after 24–48 hours, consider reporting the issue and reverting to the prior iOS/iPadOS version.
Downgrading or removing the beta: when and how
Can you roll back easily?
Downgrading from a beta isn’t always a one-button operation. Depending on Apple’s availability of signed firmware and the restore path you use, the process can require a full restore with a computer tool.
Plan to use your backup. If you created a clean restore point before installing iPadOS 18.4 Beta 2, returning to a stable version becomes significantly less painful.
What to do if you need a stable iPad for work
If your iPad is mission-critical, treat the beta iPad as a secondary device. Keep a stable iPadOS setup for your primary messaging workflow, or at minimum keep a recent backup that you can restore quickly.
For many users, the best compromise is to test Beta 2 during off-hours, verify Mail sync and send/receive reliability, and only keep the beta if everything checks out.

Should you install iPadOS 18.4 Beta 2?
Install it if you need early Mail testing
Choose the beta if you’re actively evaluating the new Mail experience, want to help identify issues, and can tolerate occasional instability. Beta testing is most valuable when you use your real workflows immediately after updating.
Do a quick “mail day” test: send, reply, forward, move to folders, search for a past message, and confirm notification behavior.
Skip it if you depend on business-critical messaging
If you can’t risk send delays, missing inbound messages, or inconsistent search results, wait for the public release. For work accounts (Exchange/Gmail/IMAP) that are tied to time-sensitive communication, stability matters more than early access.
In that case, follow a conservative approach: update only on a stable schedule, and reserve betas for spare devices or personal accounts.

Is iPadOS 18.4 Beta 2 safe for daily use?
It can be usable, but betas aren’t guaranteed to be stable. If your iPad runs critical communication workflows, weigh the new Mail experience against the risk of beta-specific syncing or notification glitches.
Why does Mail indexing sometimes take hours after an update?
After a major update, Mail may rebuild indexes so search and message views are accurate. Battery and network conditions can affect timing—charging plus Wi‑Fi usually helps.
Will the all-new Mail experience change how swipes and actions work?
Most redesigns include changes to gesture handling and action placement. After updating, test swipe actions on a small set of emails before processing important mail.
What should I report if something is broken in Beta 2?
Report reproducible issues: what you did, the exact account type, the time it occurred, and what you expected vs what happened (for example, stuck in Outbox, missing search results, or notifications delayed).
Bottom Line
iPadOS 18.4 Beta 2 is a meaningful update mainly because it brings an all-new Mail experience. If you want to evaluate it, install carefully, back up first, and validate send/receive, search, and notifications right away.
If your iPad is tied to business-critical messaging, treat the beta as optional and only keep it when the new Mail workflow proves reliable on your accounts.
