Mark Gurman’s October 15, 2026 report, summarized by MacRumors and AppleInsider, says the two refresh-rate options were evaluated during the tablet’s roughly two-year development. A separate Korean supply-chain claim points to a fixed 60Hz LTPS OLED panel. That makes 60Hz a significant possibility, not a confirmed specification. The rumored OLED upgrade, including a possible 8.4-inch size, also remains unofficial.

What Apple has actually tested
Gurman’s reported information establishes two prototypes or display options: 60Hz and 120Hz ProMotion. His wording is important: Apple “has tested both 60Hz and 120Hz ProMotion displays for the next iPad mini,” but he had not learned which option the company chose. Testing a component does not mean that component will ship.

The report also does not establish whether Apple tested a fully adaptive ProMotion implementation, a fixed 120Hz mode, or different panel suppliers. Until Apple publishes specifications, “120Hz iPad mini 8” should be treated as a development possibility rather than a product fact.

Why the 60Hz LTPS leak matters
On October 8, 2026, MacRumors reported a Korean Naver tipster’s claim that domestic production quantities had been confirmed as LTPS at 60Hz. The same source had earlier described an 8.4-inch LTPS hybrid OLED panel. These are supply-chain claims, not Apple’s technical specifications, and production information can change before launch.
Panel architecture helps explain the conflicting reports. The iPad Pro’s two-stack LTPO OLED display supports ProMotion’s adaptive 10Hz-to-120Hz range. LTPS OLED panels are generally paired with a fixed refresh rate such as 60Hz, 90Hz or 120Hz. Therefore, a confirmed LTPS panel would make the reported fixed-60Hz configuration more plausible, while not proving that every prototype used that architecture.

Should you wait for the OLED iPad mini?
Wait if a high-refresh display or OLED contrast is central to your purchase and you can tolerate uncertainty. A 120Hz panel would be most noticeable when scrolling web pages, navigating menus, playing games or writing with a stylus. A 60Hz OLED model could still deliver the OLED benefits reported by the leaks, but it would not provide the same motion cadence.

Buy an available iPad mini instead if you need a tablet now, because Apple has not announced the mini 8’s display, dimensions, price or release timing. The current iPad mini’s official technical-specifications page remains the reliable baseline for the existing model, not evidence of the next model’s hardware.

Do not pre-order cases, screen protectors or other generation-specific accessories based only on the 8.4-inch rumor. Final dimensions, camera placement, button locations and model identifiers determine fit, and none of those mini 8 details is confirmed in the reports described above.

- Match a screen protector or case to that exact generation rather than relying on the current mini’s listing.
- Check the manufacturer’s compatibility statement after launch; an identical diagonal measurement does not guarantee identical fit.

- The final refresh rate: 60Hz or 120Hz.
- Whether the shipping panel is LTPS, LTPO or another OLED design.
- Whether ProMotion would adapt dynamically, and what refresh-rate range it would use.
- The rumored 8.4-inch size.
- Brightness, battery life, price and release date.
For now, the accurate headline is not “the iPad mini 8 has 120Hz” or “the iPad mini 8 is 60Hz.” Apple tested both, and the final choice remains undisclosed.
