What is the 2020 iPad Air 4?
The correct name is iPad Air (4th generation), released in 2020. It is not the fourth-generation standard iPad from 2012, and it is not the later iPad Air 5 with an M1 chip. Apple markets the display as 10.9 inches; its technical specifications give the actual diagonal as 10.86 inches because of rounded corners.

Which storage and connectivity option should you buy?
64GB or 256GB?
64GB can suit browsing, streaming, schoolwork, note-taking, light gaming and cloud-based use. Choose 256GB if you keep large games, downloaded video, photo libraries, drawing files or music projects on the tablet, or expect to keep it for years. iPadOS and apps use some of the advertised capacity, and there is no microSD slot to add internal storage later. A cheaper 64GB listing can be poor value if it does not fit how you use the device.
Wi‑Fi or cellular?
Wi‑Fi is usually the practical choice for home, school or office use, particularly if phone tethering is available. Cellular can help with travel, outdoor work or unreliable Wi‑Fi, but service requires a separate data plan. Check the specific model with your carrier: Apple notes that cellular models are configured for particular network technologies, and compatibility should not be inferred from a listing title.

How to judge whether a listing is a good deal
Do not apply a universal “buy below” figure without a verified, like-for-like market sample. Compare the Air 4 with a newer iPad of similar condition and protection, then assess whether the price difference compensates for the older hardware and its battery risk.
- More value: 256GB when you need the space; documented good battery performance; a reputable refurbisher; a meaningful return period; written warranty and battery terms; or a tested Pencil or keyboard you would otherwise buy.
- Less value: no battery information, visible screen or chassis damage, an “as-is” sale, no useful return window, uncertain ownership or Activation Lock, missing advertised accessories, or a cellular unit with unclear carrier status.
- Compare total cost: tablet price + tax and shipping + case + Pencil + keyboard + any data plan + likely repair or battery expense.
Apple’s refurbished store can be a warranty-and-quality benchmark, but the Air 4’s availability there is not established. The cited Apple refurbished page is for a fifth-generation Air, not the Air 4: Apple refurbished iPad Air (5th generation). Do not assume Apple currently stocks refurbished Air 4 units.

What to check before buying and when it arrives
Before placing the order
- Confirm the listing identifies an iPad Air 4 (2020), not an Air 5, 10th-generation iPad or older Air. “10.9-inch iPad” alone is not enough.
- Verify storage and Wi‑Fi versus cellular. Request the model or serial number when possible.
- Ask whether the device has a clean reset and is free of Activation Lock; get the seller’s return and warranty terms in writing.
- Ask whether the battery or display has been replaced, and whether the warranty covers battery capacity.
- Confirm any advertised charger, cable, Pencil or keyboard is included. For cellular, verify carrier compatibility and unlocked status with the seller or carrier.
On arrival
- Match the device’s serial number and configuration to the listing.
- Confirm it can be set up without the previous owner’s Apple Account. Do not accept an Activation-Locked device.
- Test Touch ID and the full touchscreen. Inspect for cracks, bright or white spots, dead pixels, uneven backlighting and delamination.
- Test USB-C charging and any included data accessories, plus Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth, cameras, speakers and microphones. Test cellular connectivity if applicable.
- If a Pencil is included, pair it and test charging and writing across the screen; if a keyboard is included, test its connection and keys.
- Check storage and observe battery behavior during setup and ordinary use. A listing grade such as “like new” is not a battery-health guarantee.
A third-party replacement display can cause touch, brightness, True Tone or Pencil problems. If anything differs from the listing, document it promptly and use the seller’s return process.

Which accessories work with the Air 4?
Apple lists Apple Pencil (2nd generation) and Apple Pencil (USB-C) as compatible with the fourth-generation Air. The Air 4 also supports Smart Keyboard Folio, Magic Keyboard for iPad Air and compatible USB-C hubs, storage and displays. Apple Pencil Pro is not listed as compatible. Check the exact model before buying a case: a case advertised for a newer 11-inch Air may not fit correctly.
Accessories can change the real cost of a bargain. A streaming buyer may need only a protective case; a student or artist may want a Pencil, while a laptop-replacement buyer may need a keyboard. Apple’s 2020 launch announcement listed historical U.S. accessory prices of $129 for Apple Pencil 2, $179 for Smart Keyboard Folio and $299 for Magic Keyboard; these are not current prices. When should you buy a newer iPad instead?
Consider a newer model if its comparable refurbished or sale price is close to the Air 4’s total cost, you prioritize the longest possible software-support runway, or you need demanding creative performance or newer chip-dependent features. The Air 4 is about six years old in 2026; Apple’s user guide provides an iPadOS guide page for this model, but that is not a guarantee of future updates or any particular support end date. Skip a specific listing if the price approaches that of a newer, better-protected iPad while battery condition, returns or seller accountability remain uncertain.
