On an iPhone, create a new Safari Tab Group from an open tab: open the Tabs view, touch and hold the tab, choose Move Tab → New Tab Group, name the group, and tap Done. On an iPad, open Safari’s sidebar, choose New Tab Group → New Empty Tab Group, enter a name, and tap Save.
The interfaces are different. iPhone’s documented creation route starts with a tab that is already open and moves that tab into the new group. iPad can create an empty group first, or move an existing tab into a group afterward.

What a Safari Tab Group does
A Safari Tab Group is an organizing feature for keeping related tabs together so they are easier to find again. You can use a group for a set of pages that belong to one activity, project, trip, class, or any other subject you want separated from your other open tabs. The group is made inside Safari; you do not need another app, a utility, an accessory, or a separate service.

On iPhone, the documented iOS 27 flow begins with an existing open tab and uses that tab’s menu. On iPad, Safari’s sidebar has a control for creating a group, including an option that starts with no tabs.

- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
Before you start
- Open Safari on the iPhone or iPad where you want to create the group.
- Decide whether you want to begin with an existing tab or with an empty group.
- Choose the group name before you reach the final confirmation button. The iPhone flow finishes with Done; the iPad empty-group flow finishes with Save.
The iPhone instructions below refer to Apple’s current iOS 27 guide. The iPad instructions come from Apple’s iPad guide, whose page does not identify an iPadOS release in its path. Therefore, the iPad steps should not be read as a claim that a particular iPadOS version is named in that guide.
Create a new Safari Tab Group on iPhone
Use an open tab to create the group
- Open Safari and go to the Tabs view. In the standard iOS 27 instructions, tap the Tabs button.
- Touch and hold the tab you want to place in the new group. Press on the tab itself until its action menu appears; a brief tap is not the same action.
- Tap Move Tab.
- Tap New Tab Group.
- Enter the name you want to use for the group.
- Tap Done.
The tab you selected is the starting member of the new group. This is the key difference from the iPad’s empty-group option: on iPhone, Apple’s documented creation route does not begin from a blank group screen. It starts with a tab that is already open, then moves that tab while creating the group.
If your iPhone shows “All Tabs” under More
Some iPhone Safari layouts expose the full tab view through the More button. If you do not see the tab overview immediately, open More, then tap All Tabs. Once the tabs are visible, touch and hold the tab and continue with Move Tab → New Tab Group.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesApple’s general iPhone guidance also points to the Tabs button when Safari is using the Bottom or Top tab layout. In other words, the first control can vary with the layout shown on your phone, but the long-press menu and the group commands remain the important part of the creation sequence.

Check that the iPhone group was created
After you tap Done, look at the tab-group list in Safari’s tab view. The name you entered should identify the new group, and the tab you selected should be associated with it. If you started from the wrong tab, the group still exists; you can use the tab’s move command again to place the intended tab in the appropriate group.
Create a new Safari Tab Group on iPad
Start with an empty group
- Open Safari.
- Tap Show Sidebar.
- At the top-right of the sidebar, tap New Tab Group.
- Tap New Empty Tab Group.
- Enter a name for the group.
- Tap Save.
This route creates the group before you place any tabs in it. It is the iPad choice when you want to establish the group first and decide what to add later. The final control is Save, not the iPhone label Done.
Move an existing iPad tab into a group
If the tab you need is already open, you can move it instead of starting with an empty group.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Touch and hold the tab you want to organize.
- Tap Move to Tab Group.
- Choose an existing group, or choose the option to create a new group.
The iPad command is worded Move to Tab Group. That wording differs from the iPhone command Move Tab, so use the label shown on the device rather than looking for an identical menu.

How to choose the right starting point
Use the iPhone method when the page that represents the subject is already open. For example, if you have a page about a single project open, that tab can be the first member while you name the group. The sequence is deliberately tab-first: select the page, open its long-press menu, and create the group from there.
Use the iPad empty-group method when you want to name the workspace before opening or sorting pages. The sidebar route lets you create the container without first choosing a tab. This can be useful when the pages you intend to collect are not open yet.
If a group already exists, do not create another one just to add a page. On iPad, the existing group can be selected from Move to Tab Group. On iPhone, the same organizing idea begins by long-pressing the tab and selecting the destination in the move flow; the creation option appears when you need a new group.
Tab Groups and Safari profiles are different
A Tab Group is the tab-organizing feature described in these steps. A Safari profile is a separate Safari concept. Apple’s iPhone guidance explains that profiles keep their own Tab Groups, but a profile is not required to create or use a group. Do not enter profile settings when your goal is simply to make a new group; follow the Tabs view on iPhone or the sidebar on iPad.

This distinction matters when you are troubleshooting. If you can see your tabs but are looking for a profile control, you are in the wrong part of Safari for this task. Return to the tab view or sidebar and use the group commands listed above.

You cannot find the Tabs view
Look for the Tabs button first. If your layout presents a More button instead, tap More and choose All Tabs. Apple’s general iPhone instructions specifically identify More → All Tabs for that interface, while Bottom and Top tab layouts use the Tabs button.
Long-pressing does not show the move menu
Make sure you are pressing on the tab in the tab overview, not merely tapping a page or the Safari toolbar. The required action is a touch-and-hold. When the tab’s menu appears, look for Move Tab; that is the route to New Tab Group on iPhone.
You see “Move Tab” but not “New Tab Group”
Confirm that you are in the tab’s move menu and have selected the option for a new group rather than an existing destination. If you only need to organize the page into a group that already exists, choose that existing group instead. If you intend to create a new one, continue to the New Tab Group option in the same flow.

The name was not accepted
Enter a group name in the naming field and use the confirmation control shown by the device. On iPhone, that control is Done. If you leave the naming step without confirming, the group is not completed through the documented sequence.
Troubleshooting the iPad procedure
The sidebar is hidden
Tap Show Sidebar in Safari. The New Tab Group control is located at the top-right of that sidebar, not in the regular webpage area.
You want an empty group but selected a tab
Return to the sidebar and choose New Tab Group followed by New Empty Tab Group. That is the iPad route that creates a group without first moving an open page.
You want to move a tab instead
Touch and hold the tab, tap Move to Tab Group, and then select the destination. Choose an existing group when it is already listed, or use the create-new option if the tab belongs in a group that does not yet exist.
You tapped the wrong confirmation button
The iPad empty-group flow uses Save after you enter the name. The iPhone flow uses Done. If you are following instructions for the other device, stop and switch to the label shown for the device you are holding.
A quick completion checklist
- On iPhone, you opened the Tabs view, or used More → All Tabs where that layout requires it.
- On iPhone, you touched and held the intended tab and used Move Tab → New Tab Group.
- On iPhone, you entered a name and tapped Done.
- On iPad, you opened Show Sidebar before looking for New Tab Group.
- On iPad, you selected either New Empty Tab Group or Move to Tab Group, depending on whether you wanted a blank group or an existing tab moved.
- On iPad’s empty-group route, you entered a name and tapped Save.
Once those controls have been completed, the group has been created through Safari’s built-in Tab Groups feature. The device-specific difference is straightforward: iPhone creates the group from a selected open tab, while iPad can create an empty group from the sidebar.
