No—Apple Photos in iOS 18 does not include a feature called Magic Editor. Apple’s closest native tool is Clean Up, an Apple Intelligence feature for removing distracting objects. It is useful for cleanup, but it is not a feature-for-feature replacement for Google’s broader, generative Magic Editor.

Apple does offer other AI features in Photos, including natural-language search and automatically created memory movies. Those features do not turn Clean Up into a general-purpose image-recomposition editor.
What Apple Clean Up actually does
Clean Up is designed to remove distracting background content. When it opens, Photos may highlight possible distractions automatically. You can then tap an item, brush over it, or circle it; pinch with two fingers to zoom and pan while working. Apple documents the feature in its Apple Intelligence Photos guide.
That scope is narrower than Google’s Magic Editor. Apple does not document Clean Up as a tool for moving a person, resizing a subject, or reimagining an entire scene. If you brush over someone’s face, Apple warns that the result may be blurred or pixelated rather than naturally reconstructed.

- Remove an unwanted object: Yes.
- Select with a tap, brush, or circle: Yes.
- Automatically suggest distractions: Yes, where available.
- Move or resize a selected subject: Not documented as a Clean Up function.
- Substantially regenerate or reimagine a photo: Not a Clean Up function.
How to use Clean Up on an iPhone
- Open Photos and select a picture.
- Tap Edit.
- Tap Clean Up.
- Tap, brush over, or circle the object you want removed.
- Pinch to zoom or pan when you need a more precise selection.
- Tap Done.
Generative results vary. Busy backgrounds, repeated textures, text, fences, crowds, and straight architectural lines can leave visible artifacts. Clean Up is intended for ordinary distractions, not guaranteed restoration, forensic work, or professional retouching. Check important images carefully before sharing them.
Which iPhones support Clean Up?
Apple’s compatibility page lists Clean Up on iPhone 16 models, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max, with iOS 18.1 or later. iOS 18 alone does not add it to a regular iPhone 15, iPhone 14, or earlier model. Apple Intelligence hardware and software requirements apply; see Apple’s requirements and availability information.
Availability also depends on language and region. Apple says supported iPhones and iPads in the European Union began receiving Apple Intelligence availability with iOS 18.4. Apple’s requirements page also describes restrictions for devices purchased in mainland China under specified China-region conditions. Check Settings → Apple Intelligence & Siri, your iPhone model, iOS version, language, and region.

If Clean Up is missing
- Confirm that your model is one of the supported iPhones.
- Confirm that iOS 18.1 or later is installed.
- Check that Apple Intelligence is enabled.
- Verify language and regional availability.
- Install the latest available iOS update.
As practical troubleshooting, you can also try a standard JPEG or HEIF image, close and reopen Photos, or restart the iPhone. These steps are suggestions rather than guarantees for every file or editing state.

Apple’s other AI features in Photos
Natural-language search
In Photos, tap Search and describe a person, activity, item of clothing, or scene. Photos can return matching media, which you can review, sort, or filter. This searches your library; it does not edit the image.
Custom memory movies
Open Photos → Collections → Memories → Create, enter a description, and tap Done. Photos selects media, organizes chapters and a narrative arc, and adds music. A generated movie is a presentation of your library, not a Magic Editor-style image transformation.

How to get Google Magic Editor on an iPhone
There is no Apple Photos feature with that name, but the Google Photos app for iOS provides Google’s own AI editing workflow where eligible.
- Install or open Google Photos and back up or import the picture if necessary.
- Open the image and tap Edit.
- Select an area by tapping, brushing, or circling it.
- Choose an available AI action, such as erase or another suggested edit.
- Review the generated result and save a copy.
- To undo the change later, open the image, choose Edit, then Revert.
Google’s help documentation lists iOS 18 or later for many editing features and says many require at least 3 GB of RAM; some features may require more. Tools can differ by device, account, region, and rollout.
Is Google’s AI editing free?
In April 2024, Google announced that many AI editing tools would be available without a subscription and that iOS and Android users would receive 10 Magic Editor saves per month, with expanded access tied to eligible Pixel devices or qualifying Google One plans. That policy can change, so check the current in-app eligibility and terms before subscribing. Google’s current plan information is at Google One plans.

Clean Up, Magic Eraser, and Magic Editor are different
- Apple Clean Up: Apple’s native distraction-removal tool.
- Google Magic Eraser: Google Photos’ object-removal feature.
- Google Magic Editor: Google’s broader generative editing experience, with availability varying by device and account.
For removing a passerby or small object, Clean Up and Magic Eraser are the closest comparison. For moving, resizing, or creatively altering content, Magic Editor is the more relevant comparison.
Which alternative fits your edit?
Choose Apple Photos Clean Up when
- You only need to remove a small distraction.
- The image is already in Photos and you want an integrated workflow.
- You have a supported Apple Intelligence iPhone.
- Keeping the edit within Apple’s ecosystem matters more than broad controls.
Choose Google Photos when
- You specifically want Google’s Magic Editor ecosystem.
- You want more AI-editing options than Clean Up documents.
- You accept a second photo-library app, Google account, backup, and possible usage limits.
Choose Photoshop on iPhone when
- You need layers, masks, precise selections, compositing, Generative Fill, or Generative Expand.
- You want to add, replace, or extend content rather than simply remove a distraction.
- PSD or web/desktop continuity matters.
- You accept a steeper learning curve and possible subscription cost.
Adobe describes free core tools in Photoshop on iPhone, while premium tools and Photoshop web access are offered through its Mobile & Web plan. Its U.S. App Store listing is Adobe Photoshop.
Accuracy, privacy, and responsible use
Apple says its generative outputs can vary and recommends checking important information for accuracy. Any AI editor can introduce plausible-looking details that were not in the original. Avoid treating an edited image as an unaltered record in evidence, documentation, product listings, or other contexts where factual fidelity matters.

Apple Clean Up is the no-extra-app option for eligible devices. Google Photos adds another cloud-library workflow, and Photoshop adds an account-oriented professional workflow with optional paid features. Choose based on the change you need, not simply on the presence of an “AI” label.
What changed in iOS 18
Apple introduced the first Apple Intelligence release for iPhone with iOS 18.1 in October 2024, including Clean Up. This article describes that iOS 18-era feature set; later operating-system releases may add or change Photos capabilities and should not be assumed to be part of the original implementation.
