Yes, iOS 18 introduced a real Activation Lock check for certain previously used iPhone parts—but it does not remotely lock the whole iPhone receiving the repair. If a supported used part is still associated with the Apple Account of its source iPhone, Apple’s Repair Assistant may require that account holder to remove the lock before the part can be fully configured. Until then, the part may work with limitations.
What changed with Activation Lock for parts?
Apple announced the policy on April 11, 2024, as part of an effort to make stolen iPhones less valuable to dismantle and resell component by component. Apple said calibration for a supported used part may be restricted if the source iPhone had Activation Lock or Lost Mode enabled. Apple’s announcement describes the policy; its technical guidance explains that the post-repair process is handled through Repair Assistant.
Three related systems are involved, but they do different jobs:
- Activation Lock is the anti-theft protection associated with Find My and an owner’s Apple Account.
- Parts pairing and calibration verify and configure a component so supported features can work after repair.
- Repair Assistant is Apple’s post-repair tool for eligible parts. It can check for an Activation Lock association, transfer calibration data, update firmware, and link biometric components to the Secure Enclave when required.
The source iPhone and the repaired iPhone are not the same thing. The source device’s account association can prevent a salvaged component from completing configuration in the recipient iPhone. Apple’s documented consequence is a locked or incompletely configured part, not a blanket Activation Lock on the recipient phone.

Which iPhones and parts can be affected?
This is not a universal lock applied identically to every component or every iPhone running iOS 18. Apple’s current used-parts compatibility information covers newer iPhone families, including iPhone 15 and 15 Pro families, iPhone 16 and 17 families, and iPhone Air, with support varying by component. Listed component categories include batteries, displays, cameras, enclosures, back glass, front or TrueDepth cameras, microphones, speakers, Taptic Engine, and USB-C connectors. Check Apple’s used-parts compatibility table and the model-specific repair manual before relying on compatibility.
Repair Assistant is available only for supported combinations of device and part; do not assume every iPhone on iOS 18 supports every used component. Contemporary coverage reported compatibility beginning with iPhone 12, but Apple’s guidance is model- and component-dependent; use Apple’s current compatibility information rather than treating that report as a universal rule. MacRumors’ iOS 18 rollout report provides that reported model-floor context.
Apple’s used-parts table is not a universal inventory of every part that might be checked for an account association. Confirm the exact iPhone model, component, and repair procedure. Biometric parts have additional security requirements: Apple says Repair Assistant is required to enable Face ID authentication for supported repairs.
What do the Parts & Service messages mean?
Open Settings → General → About → Parts & Service to review repair history and component status. Apple uses several labels that should not be treated as synonyms:

Apple documents these states and the possible feature effects in its Parts & Service History guidance. For biometric parts that have not completed calibration, Face ID or Touch ID may be unavailable for unlocking the phone or signing in to apps.
Why can a used part be locked?
A component can remain associated with the Apple Account of the iPhone in which it was previously installed. Repair Assistant can detect that association during setup. Apple’s stated goal is to deter theft, but a legitimate donor part can encounter the same restriction if its former owner did not remove the source phone from Find My or it remained in Lost Mode.
- A stolen phone is dismantled and a component is sold.
- A donor iPhone is sold or recycled before its owner removes it from their account.
- A buyer purchases an “OEM pull” part without confirmation that its source device was cleared.
- A genuine salvaged part is still linked to an account whose holder cannot be reached.
This is the trade-off in Apple’s approach: checking account status can make stolen components harder to resell, while making the history and account status of legitimate used parts important to repairers and buyers. Apple also expanded its support for reusable genuine parts, subject to compatibility and successful configuration.
How to unlock a used part
The required account is the Apple Account associated with the previous iPhone containing the part—not simply the account currently used on the repaired phone. Apple’s part Activation Lock instructions describe two legitimate routes.

Use Repair Assistant on the repaired iPhone
- Install the part in an iPhone that supports that device-and-component combination.
- Update the iPhone to the latest non-beta version of iOS and connect it to the internet.
- Start Repair Assistant when prompted, or follow the repair workflow on the device.
- If asked, enter the email address or phone number and password for the Apple Account used on the previous device that contained the part.
- Allow the unlock and configuration process to finish. Apple says it can take several minutes.
- Check Settings → General → About → Parts & Service to see whether repair configuration is complete.
Have the previous owner remove the source device through Find My
- Ask the account holder to go to iCloud.com/find and sign in with the Apple Account associated with the source iPhone.
- Select the iPhone that contained the part, then select Remove.
- If the source device is marked lost, turn off Lost Mode as well.
- Wait several minutes for the status to update, then return to Repair Assistant and complete configuration.
Apple notes that Remove may not be available while the source iPhone is online. If the seller or previous owner cannot help, ask for a return or replace the part with one verified to be unlocked. Apple says it cannot remove Activation Lock for previously used parts; its guidance does not establish proof of purchase for a loose component as a substitute for the associated account holder’s action.
What if the part stays locked?
A locked part is not necessarily physically dead. Apple says it may remain usable, but it might not perform as expected or provide features important to privacy, security, or safety. The device can continue to show Finish Repair; the part is not eligible for Apple’s Limited Warranty or AppleCare coverage, and the device cannot be traded in while the part remains locked. For biometric components, incomplete configuration can leave Face ID or Touch ID unavailable.
Used genuine parts and aftermarket parts are different cases
A genuine Apple component can be Activation Locked if it remains linked to another account. An aftermarket component is not automatically Activation Locked merely because iOS reports it as Unknown.
Used genuine Apple parts
Apple defines a used Apple part as a genuine component taken from an existing device of the same model. Apple says a good used part can provide performance and security comparable to a new genuine part, but quality can vary because Apple does not control its previous history. Used parts and repairs using them are not covered by Apple’s product warranty or AppleCare. See Apple’s used-parts guidance.

Third-party parts
Apple says third-party components may not perform at the same level as genuine or used Apple parts and may pose privacy or safety risks. It says it will not actively disable a third-party part unless it affects customer security or privacy, such as biometric authentication. An Unknown message can have several causes and does not establish that Activation Lock is involved.

Used batteries need particular caution
Apple warns that used batteries installed with adhesive generally should not be reused. Removing adhesive can damage a cell and create risks including overheating, swelling, venting, leaking, fire, injury, or property damage. Apple says batteries installed with screws may be reusable. A genuine battery is not automatically safe to reuse simply because it is genuine.
Face ID and Touch ID components
Biometric components have stricter security requirements. Where supported, Repair Assistant may need to link biometric sensors to the logic board’s Secure Enclave. If calibration cannot be completed, Face ID or Touch ID may remain unavailable; damage, modification, mismatch, or an account lock may prevent software configuration from restoring the feature.
Logic boards and DIY repairs
A previously used logic board is a separate concern from ordinary component reuse: Apple may label it Unverified, and features such as Apple Pay can be affected. Apple’s Self Service Repair program is intended for people with the knowledge and experience to repair electronic devices. Apple warns that incorrect procedures, unsuitable tools, or nongenuine parts can cause damage, fire, injury, loss of water resistance, or compromised functionality. Review the Self Service Repair information and model-specific manuals before attempting a repair.

How to evaluate a used iPhone part before buying
- Match the exact model and component. Verify compatibility in Apple’s current parts table and repair manual; marketplace descriptions such as “fits iPhone 15” or “OEM” are not enough.
- Ask about Activation Lock and source-device status. Request written confirmation that the source device was removed from Find My and that Lost Mode is off.
- Establish provenance. Find out whether the item is new, used genuine, refurbished, or aftermarket, and whether the seller can identify the donor device or supply a reliable history.
- Require a return route. Make sure the seller will accept a return if Repair Assistant reports an account lock or the part cannot be configured. This is especially important when the original account holder may be unreachable.
- Treat biometric parts as high risk. Confirm the supported repair procedure and whether required paired components are included.
- Be cautious with used batteries. Avoid unknown used adhesive-backed batteries; consider a new battery instead.
- Account for warranty and resale. Apple does not cover used parts or repairs using them under its product warranty or AppleCare. A locked part can block trade-in, while other part-history warnings may affect features or value.
Which repair route makes sense?

Common problems and what to check
Repair Assistant asks for another person’s Apple Account
The part is likely still associated with the Apple Account used on its source iPhone. Ask the seller or former owner to remove that iPhone from Find My and disable Lost Mode, or return the part if they cannot. Do not hand your own account password to a seller or an unofficial unlocking service.
The phone works, but Parts & Service says “Finish Repair”
Configuration or calibration may be incomplete. On a supported device, connect to the internet, install the latest non-beta iOS, and run Repair Assistant. Some component features may remain limited until the process completes.
It says “Unknown Part,” but does not request an account
Unknown can indicate a nongenuine, malfunctioning, modified, or incompletely verified part. It is not proof of an Activation Lock association; review the part’s history and have the component assessed if necessary.
The replacement works but Face ID or Touch ID does not
Check whether the supported repair’s calibration and biometric linking completed. If the component is locked, damaged, modified, or mismatched, Repair Assistant may not restore biometric authentication.

Can an iOS setting disable the check?
Apple’s current guidance describes authentication with the associated Apple Account or removal of Activation Lock from the source device, not a user-facing switch to turn off checks for parts.
