iOS 17 was released on September 18, 2023 as a free update for the iPhone XS, iPhone XR, iPhone SE (2nd generation), and newer models. Its biggest additions included StandBy, Contact Posters, Live Voicemail, Check In, NameDrop, FaceTime messages, improved Messages and keyboard features, and stronger accessibility tools. Journal arrived later in the iOS 17 update cycle, not in iOS 17.0. In 2026, iOS 17 is a previous-generation release rather than Apple’s current iPhone operating system.
When was iOS 17 released?
Apple previewed iOS 17 at WWDC in June 2023 and released the public update on Monday, September 18, 2023. It was a free software update for eligible iPhones. Apple released the iPhone 15 family shortly afterward, but the iPhone 15 retail launch and the iOS 17 software release were separate events. See Apple’s announcement at Apple Newsroom.
iOS 17 refined everyday communication and utility rather than introducing a complete visual redesign. The release improved calling, messaging, sharing, charging-screen information, text input, privacy, safety, and accessibility.
Which iPhones support iOS 17?
iOS 17 supports the following models:
- iPhone XR
- iPhone XS
- iPhone XS Max
- iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, and iPhone 11 Pro Max
- iPhone SE (2nd generation)
- iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 12 Pro Max
- iPhone 13 mini, iPhone 13, iPhone 13 Pro, and iPhone 13 Pro Max
- iPhone SE (3rd generation)
- iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro, and iPhone 14 Pro Max
- iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max
The iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone X cannot install iOS 17. Owners of those phones cannot obtain it through a software workaround; they must remain on an older supported iOS branch or replace the device. Apple’s model documentation is available through iPhone Manuals and Downloads.

Compatibility does not mean identical features
An eligible model may not receive every feature or the same behavior as a newer iPhone. Hardware such as the processor and display, plus carrier, country, region, language, Apple services, and paired accessories can affect availability. Apple explicitly warns that features vary by model, region, language, and carrier; consult its compatibility guidance and feature-availability page.
The major iOS 17 features
StandBy turns a charging iPhone into a glanceable display
When an iPhone is charging and positioned on its side, StandBy can show clocks, widgets, photos, Live Activities, notifications, and other glanceable information. It is useful on a desk or nightstand, but it is a charging mode—not a replacement for an iPad or smart display. Display persistence and the most useful always-visible behavior depend on the iPhone’s screen hardware. A stand or MagSafe-compatible charger can make positioning easier, but neither is universally required.
Contact Posters personalize incoming calls
Contact Posters let users choose an image, typography, and presentation that appear when they call someone. The experience depends on the caller being recognized in Contacts and on the calling app supporting the integration. It extends the personalization approach Apple introduced with Lock Screen customization in iOS 16.

Live Voicemail transcribes a caller in real time
Live Voicemail displays a transcription while a caller leaves a message, so the recipient can decide whether to answer. It is not guaranteed to work identically everywhere: carrier voicemail behavior, region, language, roaming, and call-routing services can affect availability. It should not be confused with every carrier’s separate voicemail-transcription service.
FaceTime messages preserve unanswered calls
If a FaceTime audio or video call is not answered, the caller can leave a message for later playback. FaceTime availability, account settings, region, and software version can affect how the feature behaves, and it is distinct from ordinary voicemail.
Check In adds destination-based safety sharing
Check In lets a user notify a chosen contact when they reach a destination. If progress stops unexpectedly, Messages can prompt the user and, depending on the configured conditions, share information such as location, battery level, and cellular signal. It is a destination- or timer-based workflow, not continuous location sharing, and requires Messages setup and the relevant permissions.

NameDrop and expanded AirDrop sharing
NameDrop uses proximity to exchange selected contact details between compatible iPhones or between an iPhone and compatible Apple Watch hardware. Bringing devices together does not automatically disclose an entire address book: users see an exchange interface and choose what to share. AirDrop can also continue a transfer over the internet after devices move apart when the required conditions and account settings are met.
Messages becomes easier to search and navigate
- A catch-up control jumps to the first unread message in a conversation.
- Swiping on a message replies inline.
- Search supports more filters.
- Audio messages can be transcribed.
- Stickers gain expanded placement and interaction options.
- Location sharing and related location controls receive improvements.
More capable autocorrect and Dictation
iOS 17 improved autocorrect, inline predictive text, recognition of commonly mistyped words, and Dictation. These were machine-learning improvements to text input, not the later Apple Intelligence platform.

Safari added separate profiles for different browsing contexts, along with further private-browsing improvements. iOS 17 also lets people share groups of passwords and passkeys with trusted contacts. A shared group stays synchronized as members make changes; it is not the same as sending credentials through Messages or email. Apple documents these changes in About iOS 17 Updates.

Interactive widgets
Supported widgets can perform actions such as marking a reminder complete without opening the app. The widget must support interaction, and third-party developers had to update their apps. Some actions still open the full app instead of completing entirely in the widget.
Journal arrived after the initial release
Journal was announced as an iOS 17 feature but was not included in iOS 17.0 on September 18, 2023. It arrived in a later update associated with iOS 17.2; see Apple’s iOS 17.2 release notes. Apple described on-device processing, end-to-end encryption, and app locking, but those are Apple’s product claims rather than an independent security audit. Journaling Suggestions can surface private device activity, so review its settings before enabling it.
Accessibility features received major additions
- Assistive Access: a simplified, customizable interface for people with cognitive disabilities.
- Live Speech: typed text spoken during in-person conversations, calls, or FaceTime.
- Personal Voice: a user-created voice intended for people at risk of losing speech.
- Point and Speak: helps blind or low-vision users identify text or objects by pointing.
Hardware, language, and setup requirements vary. Apple’s launch announcement provides the feature descriptions at Apple Newsroom.

How to check for an iOS update
- Open Settings.
- Tap General.
- Tap Software Update.
- Review the version Apple offers for the device.
- Tap Update or Download and Install when available.
In 2026, an eligible iPhone may be offered a later supported iOS version rather than iOS 17. Apple’s update path is documented in its iPhone software-update guidance. Back up the phone and ensure adequate storage before installing a major update.
If iOS 17 does not appear
- Confirm the exact model under Settings > General > About. iPhone X and iPhone 8 models are excluded.
- The phone may already be running a newer iOS version.
- Free storage, connect to Wi-Fi and power, and restart the iPhone.
- A work or school management profile may restrict updates.
- The feature you expect may require iOS 17.1, 17.2, or a later 17.x release.
If an eligible device still fails to update, back it up and use Finder on a Mac, or Apple Devices/iTunes workflows on Windows, following Apple’s current instructions. Apple controls which older versions remain signed, so reinstalling iOS 17 after moving to a later signed version may not be possible.
Is iOS 17 still current in 2026?
No. iOS 17 is Apple’s 2023 iPhone operating system and is now a historical release. Apple’s current iPhone documentation centers on iOS 26, and its security-release listings cover later branches. Check the version offered in Settings > General > Software Update and consult Apple’s iOS 26 compatibility page and security releases rather than treating iOS 17 as the latest version.
If you specifically need iOS 17 for an old app, enterprise environment, testing device, or archival setup, verify compatibility and signing status first. Running an outdated branch can reduce security and app support. Devices that cannot run iOS 17 may receive limited security updates on older branches, but Apple’s current security list should be checked instead of assuming continued coverage.
The Bottom Line
iOS 17 launched on September 18, 2023 for the iPhone XS/XR and newer, plus the second- and third-generation iPhone SE. Its most important changes were practical communication, safety, sharing, charging-screen, input, and accessibility improvements. Journal arrived later, feature availability varied by model and region, and iOS 17 is no longer the current iOS generation in 2026.
