Its 5.1-litre tank is much smaller than that rated daily capacity, so continuous drainage may be useful in persistently damp spaces. Public information establishes its specifications and setup requirements, but does not reveal the independent test scores needed to judge its extraction, efficiency or noise against rivals.
What the ION650 is—and what it is not
The Rhine ION650 is a compressor dehumidifier. It is not the Rhine Pro combination air purifier and dehumidifier: Ionmax’s separate Rhine Pro manual covers the later ION651, which adds H13 HEPA air purification. The models should not be treated as interchangeable. Ionmax’s ION650 manual and its manuals page identify the distinction.

These are manufacturer specifications from Ionmax’s version 1.0 manual, updated August 2022. The extraction figure is a rated maximum under the stated test conditions, not an independent result or a promise of household performance.

The gap between the rated daily removal and tank size matters in practice: in damp conditions the tank can need frequent emptying if the unit is not connected to continuous drainage. The actual amount collected depends on room conditions; the manual’s 50 L/day rating should not be read as typical daily yield.

How independent evidence affects the verdict
CHOICE’s public product page identifies the ION650 as a refrigeration dehumidifier and repeats the claimed 50 L/day capacity and 5–35°C operating range. Its expert rating and measured fields—including water removal, energy efficiency, ease of use, room heating, power consumption and noise—are members-only. ProductReview.com.au displayed 4.7/5 from 11 reviews when accessed on October 7, 2026. That is a small, changeable set of owner opinions, not a controlled test. Some reviewers praise moisture collection and ease of moving the unit; others say it warms the room or describe difficulty connecting or scheduling through the app. These reports are useful points to consider, not guaranteed outcomes. CHOICE’s public page also shows a 3-year warranty, China as country of origin and AUD $649, but does not make the dates for those details clear. Treat them as historical page data rather than current warranty or price information. Its listed weight conflicts with the 19 kg figure in the Ionmax manual and retailer listing, so this review uses the manufacturer’s specification. Woolworths product listing.

Placement and safe setup
Ionmax specifies a 5–35°C operating range and says to use the unit only in areas larger than 7 m². Follow the full manual for setup and safety requirements; the key placement directions are:
- Place it upright on a stable, level surface and do not position it on its power cable.
- Leave a safe distance from walls and furniture. If internal doors are open, Ionmax suggests central positioning such as a landing or hallway.
- Do not use it in small, unventilated or confined areas, near a possible flammable-gas leak, or close to a heat source.
The ION650 uses R290 refrigerant. Ionmax’s manual warns: “This unit uses a flammable refrigerant. If the refrigerant leaks and comes in contact with fire or heating parts, it will create harmful gas and there is a risk of fire.” Read the complete Ionmax ION650 manual for all safety, operation and setup instructions.
Tank or continuous drainage?
Using the tank
The removable tank holds 5.1 litres. Check it and empty it as needed; Ionmax also advises emptying the tank before moving the appliance. A full tank can make manual emptying a frequent task when the air is very damp.

Using the supplied drain hose
The manual describes continuous drainage with the hose provided. For reliable flow, attach the hose firmly, lead it to a suitable drain at a downward slope and avoid sharp bends. If water does not drain, check these points and the hose connection against the manual’s troubleshooting guidance.

Filter care and controls
Washable filter
The washable pre-filter sits at the back of the unit. Ionmax recommends periodic checks and suggests cleaning every two weeks, or more or less often according to use and the air environment. Remove dust gently with a soft-brush vacuum or rinse the filter with water, then let it dry completely before reinstalling it. Do not operate the dehumidifier without the filter.
Humidity settings and modes
The manual describes humidity adjustment in 5% increments, with the compressor and fan cycling around the selected setpoint. Available functions include auto, fan, sleep and laundry modes, Wi-Fi app control and a 24-hour timer. A protective three-minute delay before compressor restart is also specified, so the compressor may not resume immediately after stopping.

What to compare before choosing a dehumidifier
The ION650’s rated capacity alone is not enough to establish that it will outperform another model. For a meaningful comparison, look for independent measurements under comparable room temperature and humidity conditions, including:
- Water removed and energy used per quantity of water removed.
- Noise and room heating during operation.
- Tank size, drainage options and how easy the unit is to empty or position.
- Minimum operating temperature, controls and app reliability.
- Current price and warranty terms for the market where you plan to buy.
CHOICE lists several of these as test dimensions, but its public ION650 page withholds the measured results. No score-based comparison can be drawn from the public information cited here.
