Invincible Comics Reading Order: Where to Start After Season 4

If you have finished Season 4 of Invincible, start the comic at issue Invincible #79. GamesRadar+ places the animated endpoint around issues #77–78 and identifies #79 as the practical next issue. You can read it in Invincible Compendium Volume 2 or trade paperback Volume 14.

That is a catch-up point, not a promise of a scene-for-scene continuation. The adaptation changes chronology, characterization and story details, so some material may feel familiar or appear in a different form. For the complete comic experience, begin with Compendium Volume 1 and read Volumes 2 and 3 in order.

The short answer: begin with Invincible #79

Season 4 does not end at a perfectly matching comic-book chapter. The current GamesRadar+ guide, published April 22, 2026, places the television story’s stopping point approximately around Invincible #77–78 and recommends issue #79 as the most useful place to continue.

Issue #79 is collected in two practical formats:

  • Invincible Compendium Volume 2: the large-volume option if you want the surrounding run in one book.
  • Trade paperback Volume 14: the smaller book-format route for readers who prefer individual trades.

Neither format should be treated as an exact “next episode.” The show is an adaptation rather than a panel-by-panel transcription. It may move events earlier or later, combine characters, alter outcomes and revisit material from a different perspective. Starting at #79 is therefore the fastest way to move beyond the broad television endpoint, while starting at #1 is the safest way to avoid missing comic-only setup.

Choose between two valid reading paths

Path A: Continue after Season 4

  1. Finish Season 4.
  2. Begin with Invincible #79.
  3. Use Invincible Compendium Volume 2 or trade paperback Volume 14 to obtain that issue.
  4. Continue through the remaining main-series collections in publication order.

This path minimizes rereading and gets you into material that lies beyond the television story as mapped by the current guide. Because the adaptation is not identical to the comic, expect occasional repeated scenes, changed motivations or plot threads that do not line up one-for-one.

Path B: Read the complete core comic from the beginning

  1. Read Invincible Compendium Volume 1.
  2. Continue with Invincible Compendium Volume 2.
  3. Finish with Invincible Compendium Volume 3.

A current Comic Catch-Up Guide lists those three compendiums in that order and treats connected series as optional branches. Simon & Schuster’s series catalog also lists the trade-paperback editions in book order, so readers who prefer shorter volumes can follow the numbered trades instead of the three oversized compendiums.

For a first-time reader, this route gives the intended introduction to Mark Grayson, his family, the Viltrumite conflict and the many supporting characters whose comic histories differ from their animated versions.

What the compendiums and trades mean

The two formats contain the same core series material in different packaging. A compendium groups a large stretch of issues into a thick paperback. Trade paperbacks divide that run into numbered, easier-to-handle books. The choice is mainly about where you are entering, how many issues you want per purchase and whether you prefer a portable book or a single large volume.

Reader goal Recommended format Why it fits
Continue immediately after Season 4 Invincible #79 in Compendium Volume 2 The current catch-up guide identifies #79 as the practical post-Season 4 starting point, and the second compendium contains it.
Continue with smaller physical books Trade paperback Volume 14 Volume 14 is the trade-paperback collection that includes the recommended issue #79.
Read the whole main story in the fewest books Compendiums Volumes 1–3 The three-volume sequence covers the core series from its beginning through its conclusion.
Read in shorter, numbered installments The trade-paperback series in order Simon & Schuster’s catalog provides the numbered trade editions for readers who do not want compendium-sized books.

Prices, inventory and regional editions change. The cited guides establish the collection mapping, but they do not establish a single current price or guaranteed stock level. Check the retailer or publisher listing serving your country before buying, especially if you are trying to match a particular printing or format.

Why the television and comic timelines do not match exactly

Issue #79 is a useful handoff because the current guide places the Season 4 finale near #77–78. It is not a continuity guarantee. The animated series can compress several comic arcs, postpone a reveal, give a side character a larger role or create original transitions between major events.

That difference creates three common experiences when you begin at #79:

  • Recognizable events: a scene or conflict may already have appeared on television, but the comic may stage it differently.
  • Missing connective tissue: a character’s position in #79 may make more sense if you know comic-only scenes from earlier issues.
  • Different emphasis: the same broad outcome can have a different emotional or political meaning in the comic.

If any of those changes are frustrating, switch to the beginning rather than assuming you bought the wrong book. The three-compendium route is designed for readers who want every setup and transition in the comic’s own order.

The main-series order, step by step

1. Start with Compendium Volume 1

Volume 1 is the entry point for a new comic reader. It establishes the original version of Mark’s origin, his family relationships, the early superhero community and the threats that shape the wider universe. Even viewers who know the animated premise will encounter altered details and different pacing.

2. Move to Compendium Volume 2

Volume 2 continues directly from the first book and includes issue #79. If you are reading from the beginning, simply proceed into Volume 2 when Volume 1 ends. If you are coming from Season 4, open Volume 2 at #79 for the recommended pickup, while understanding that earlier issues in the volume contain comic material you may not have seen.

3. Finish with Compendium Volume 3

Volume 3 completes the main-series reading path. Read it after Volume 2 rather than using a spin-off as a bridge. The core narrative is complete without requiring any side title.

Trade-paperback alternative

Readers who want the same story divided into smaller books can follow the numbered trades from the beginning. For a Season 4 continuation, Volume 14 is the relevant trade because it collects #79. Keep the numbering in sequence if you later decide to read earlier material; jumping between trade numbers can expose you to unresolved plot threads.

Are the spin-offs required?

No. The main Invincible series is sufficient for the complete core story. The connected books expand the setting and follow characters who cross into the wider universe, but they are optional rather than prerequisites for understanding the three compendiums.

Tech Jacket

The announced Tech Jacket Compendium collects Tech Jacket #1–8, Tech Jacket Digital #1–3 and the 2013 Tech Jacket #1–12. It is best read as a universe expansion after you have established the main cast, not as a required opening chapter for Invincible.

The Astounding Wolf-Man

The Astounding Wolf-Man Compendium collects The Astounding Wolf-Man #1–25 and Invincible #57. That inclusion makes it especially interesting to readers who want additional context around the crossover material, but it still does not replace the main-series order.

Skybound said in its July 11, 2025 announcement that both characters drew renewed interest after appearing in Season 3. Robert Kirkman, creator of Invincible, said: “It’s been a pleasant surprise seeing the interest in both of these series spiking after their appearances in season 3 of Invincible!” The statement explains the collections’ timing, not a requirement to read them before continuing Mark’s story.

Optional ways to place the spin-offs

There is no single mandatory crossover schedule supplied for these side series. Use one of these approaches:

  • Main story first: read Compendiums 1–3, then explore Tech Jacket and The Astounding Wolf-Man.
  • Character-led expansion: read the main series until a character’s appearance makes you curious, pause for that character’s compendium, then return to the main book.
  • Publication-focused reading: read each spin-off as its own collected run without trying to interleave individual issues.

The first option is the least confusing because it keeps the central plot uninterrupted. An interleaved issue-by-issue chronology is unnecessary unless you specifically want to reconstruct publication history.

About the series’ issue count

Be cautious with statements that give one definitive total for the complete run. GamesRadar+’s current guide describes 144 issues, while Skybound’s July 2025 announcement describes a 146-issue run. Skybound separately identifies Invincible #1 as debuting on January 22, 2003. The available statements do not explain why the totals differ, so this article does not treat either number as a reconciled count.

The discrepancy does not change the practical reading order: start at #1 for the full experience, use #79 for the post-Season 4 handoff, and follow the three compendiums or the numbered trades.

Which path should you choose?

Choose #79 if you want the fastest continuation

  • You have finished Season 4 and mainly want unreleased story material.
  • You are comfortable with altered or repeated scenes.
  • You want one purchase that contains the recommended pickup.

Choose Compendium Volume 1 if you want context

  • You want to compare the adaptation with its source rather than simply outrun it.
  • You do not want to wonder whether a changed character or plot point originated earlier in the comic.
  • You plan to read the complete core narrative.

Choose the trades if physical size matters

  • You prefer shorter reading sessions and lighter books.
  • You want numbered volumes that are easier to lend, store or replace individually.
  • You specifically need Volume 14 for the #79 continuation.

Buying and availability notes

The announced Tech Jacket Compendium and The Astounding Wolf-Man Compendium had a suggested retail price of $39.99 each in Skybound’s July 11, 2025 release announcement, with bookseller and digital editions scheduled for December 2, 2025. That was a stated launch price and date, not a guarantee of what a reader will pay now. Current discounts, stock and regional pricing may differ.

The same caution applies to the main-series compendiums and trade paperbacks. Confirm the edition, format and availability at the time of purchase. If a listing does not clearly identify the volume number, check that it is Volume 2 before buying for issue #79.

A spoiler-conscious reading plan

If you want to avoid learning comic outcomes before reading them, use this sequence:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Decide whether you are continuing from Season 4 or restarting at #1.
  2. Buy only the first volume needed for that decision rather than the entire set immediately.
  3. For the continuation route, verify that the book includes issue #79.
  4. Read the main-series collections without opening spin-off summaries or character pages until you reach the point that interests you.
  5. Add Tech Jacket or The Astounding Wolf-Man after the core story, unless you deliberately want a broader-universe detour.

This approach preserves the television viewer’s momentum while leaving room to return later for the comic’s earlier material.
