Blue Duck Capital Partners has reportedly urged Snap to sell about 20% of its Specs business at a proposed $5 billion valuation, which would imply $1 billion in gross proceeds. The proposal, reported by The Next Web (TNW), is an investor recommendation—not an announced Snap deal or an independently verified valuation. Blue Duck says the money could cover roughly two years of Specs spending, but the sources available do not disclose the unit’s budget or the calculation behind that estimate.
What Blue Duck wants Snap to do
TNW reported on October 6, 2026, that Blue Duck wrote to Snap’s board urging it to sell about one-fifth of Specs to outside investors. The proposed $5 billion valuation would put the proposed 20% stake at $1 billion. Blue Duck reportedly suggested venture investors or a strategic partner such as SpaceX; SpaceX was an example in the proposal, not a confirmed bidder or partner. TNW’s report says the fund believes the proceeds could finance roughly two years of Specs spending.

Those are Blue Duck’s proposed terms and estimate, not evidence that Snap has agreed to sell, that an investor would accept the valuation, or that the capital is required. The reviewed reporting does not establish whether Snap received or answered the letter, whether it is considering a transaction, what Specs spends on its own, or how Blue Duck calculated the $5 billion figure and two-year runway.

What Snap says about Specs and its financial priorities
Snap’s own stated strategy makes the debate more complicated than a simple choice between investing and cutting costs. In the company’s Q2 2026 prepared remarks, CEO Evan Spiegel called SPECS “our largest long-term opportunity” and said free cash flow per share would be Snap’s “primary financial objective going forward.” The remarks were filed with the SEC in August 2026. These statements express Snap’s strategic ambition and financial priority; they do not quantify Specs’ expected return, spending, or contribution to cash flow. An outside investment could provide a separate source of capital, but the reported proposal does not specify governance terms or how operating control would be shared.

Why investors disagree
Blue Duck’s reported proposal treats Specs as a business that could attract outside capital while Snap retains a stake. Irenic Capital Management, another investor, has reportedly argued that Snap should spin Specs off or shut it down. TNW attributed to Irenic the claim that more than $3.5 billion had already been invested and the view that Specs should be self-funding by now. The amount and judgment are Irenic’s claims as reported by TNW, not an independently verified Specs cost total.
The competing positions rest on different assumptions. Blue Duck appears to favor financing the effort from outside Snap; Irenic’s reported argument is that Snap should stop funding it through a separation or closure. Snap, meanwhile, has described SPECS as a major long-term opportunity while prioritizing free cash flow per share. None of the reported positions establishes whether Specs will earn an adequate return.

- Capital and control: A minority investment could bring in funding while leaving Snap with a stake, but the proposal’s governance and operating-control terms have not been reported. A spin-off or closure would be a different course, not a version of the same financing plan.
- Valuation: The $5 billion figure is Blue Duck’s proposed valuation. It is not a confirmed market price, and the available information does not establish what a transaction would mean for Snap shareholders.
- Runway: Blue Duck’s roughly two-year estimate cannot be evaluated without Specs’ standalone spending and the assumptions behind the calculation.
- Product execution: Snap has announced a preorder price and expected shipping window, but the reviewed sources do not establish realized sales, production economics, or customer retention.
- Strategic fit: Snap’s ambition and its cash-flow objective are both on the record, but the company’s remarks do not quantify how it will balance them.
What SPECS is, and whether it is available
Snap announced SPECS on June 16, 2026, describing them as see-through augmented-reality glasses with a wearable computer. The company set a preorder price of $2,195 through SPECS.com and said shipping was expected in fall 2026 in the United States, United Kingdom, and France. At launch, Spiegel called SPECS “the beginning of a new era in computing.” That is Snap’s product positioning, not an independent assessment of the glasses or evidence of consumer demand.
