Intuitive Surgical is growing procedures, expanding its da Vinci installed base and placing more of its newest systems. Those results support a strong operating story—but they do not, by themselves, show that the shares are worth any particular price. The valuation question is whether future procedure growth, system economics and competitive durability can meet the expectations already reflected in the stock.
What Intuitive Surgical sells—and what drives its growth
Intuitive develops, manufactures and markets the da Vinci surgical system, used to assist surgeons in minimally invasive procedures. Its portfolio also includes Ion, an endoluminal platform used in lung biopsy procedures. The company has commercialized multiple da Vinci generations since 1999; da Vinci 5 was introduced in 2024. Intuitive Surgical’s 2025 Form 10-K describes the platforms and business.
The business is not simply a matter of selling a robot once. New system placements and leases expand the installed base; procedures performed on those systems drive demand for instruments and accessories, while customers also need service. These are useful links to track, but a larger installed base does not automatically translate into proportional revenue or earnings: utilization, placement terms and the mix of revenue matter.
What the Q2 2026 results show
In its July 16, 2026 earnings release, Intuitive reported $2.89 billion in second-quarter revenue, up 19% year over year. GAAP net income was $818 million, or $2.29 per diluted share, compared with $658 million, or $1.81 per diluted share, in Q2 2025. Worldwide da Vinci and Ion procedures grew approximately 16% year over year; da Vinci procedures grew approximately 15%, and Ion procedures approximately 36%. Intuitive Surgical’s Q2 2026 results provide the company-reported figures.

Procedures, placements and installed base are different signals
The da Vinci installed base reached 11,710 systems at June 30, 2026, 12% above the 10,488 systems reported one year earlier. Intuitive placed 468 da Vinci systems in Q2 2026, including 246 da Vinci 5 systems. In Q2 2025 it placed 395 systems, including 180 da Vinci 5 systems. Procedure growth measures clinical use; installed-base growth measures the accumulated fleet; placements measure new systems delivered or otherwise placed. They can move at different rates because hospitals make capital decisions and build utilization over different timelines.
Systems revenue also increased
Systems revenue was $685 million in Q2 2026, compared with $575 million a year earlier. The company attributed the increase to a larger lease installed base, higher average selling prices for da Vinci systems and increased placements. That quarter’s increase is not, on its own, evidence that recurring revenue is taking a larger share of the business or that margins will remain stable.

Why a strong quarter does not settle the valuation
A share price reflects expectations about future results, not just the latest reported quarter. A company can grow revenue and procedures rapidly and still disappoint shareholders if growth slows sooner than expected, system economics weaken or costs rise. Conversely, durable growth and attractive economics can help explain why investors assign a premium to a business. Neither possibility establishes fair value without examining the price and the assumptions behind it.
One dated reference point is Zacks Investment Research’s September 9, 2026 article, which reported a 30.26x forward price-to-earnings estimate for ISRG and compared it with Medtronic and Stryker. That is a third-party estimate based on the share price and earnings estimates used at the time—not an intrinsic-value calculation or a current multiple that can be carried forward unchanged. A forward P/E also says little by itself about whether the earnings estimates are achievable.

What investors should test against the price
Growth durability
Worldwide da Vinci procedures grew approximately 18% in 2025, according to the company’s Q4 2025 release. Q2 2026’s approximately 15% da Vinci procedure growth and approximately 16% combined da Vinci and Ion growth show continued expansion in that quarter, not a forecast. Compare growth across periods, platforms, geographies and specialties, and distinguish procedure trends from system placements. Intuitive’s Q4 2025 release initially forecast approximately 13% to 15% worldwide da Vinci procedure growth for 2026; that was historical guidance, not the latest outlook. The Q4 2025 release is useful for that historical context; use the later Q2 2026 release for the company’s current guidance rather than treating the earlier range as current.
Utilization and monetization
Track whether systems are purchased or leased, how the installed base is used, and how instruments, accessories and service contribute to reported revenue. The Q2 release connects systems revenue growth to placements, leases and average selling prices; the annual report describes the broader business. Those facts do not establish that every new system will be used enough to justify a hospital’s capital commitment. Utilization and revenue-line detail are necessary to evaluate that link.

Margins and execution
Growth must be delivered while manufacturing systems, sourcing components and servicing a larger fleet. Intuitive’s Q2 filing identifies tariffs, suppliers, manufacturing and transitions in direct markets among risks to execution. Rising sales do not guarantee expanding margins if those costs or operational demands grow faster.
Expectations versus the earnings multiple
Compare any share-price-dependent valuation measure with the earnings growth it assumes and the risks to that growth. The September 2026 Zacks forward P/E is one dated comparison point, not a standalone verdict. Recheck both the share price and earnings estimates whenever using a forward multiple; changes in either can alter it.

Risks that could challenge the growth case
Intuitive’s Q2 2026 Form 10-Q lists risks including competition from alternative approaches and robotic systems, including domestic competitors in some markets; regulatory requirements and approvals; hospital spending and payer management of procedures; uncertainty in product development and customer acceptance; tariffs; dependence on sole- or single-source suppliers; manufacturing disruption; staffing; cybersecurity; litigation; and adverse publicity about product safety or training. These are company-disclosed risks, not predictions that a particular event will occur. The Q2 2026 Form 10-Q provides the filing’s risk disclosures.
Procedure mix can also differ across markets and specialties. In Q2 2026, the company said U.S. procedure growth was led by general surgery—especially cholecystectomy, hernia repair and appendectomy—along with gynecological growth. That was partly offset by a high-single-digit decline in U.S. bariatric procedures, which the company said accounted for approximately 2% of total da Vinci procedures. This is a quarter-specific mix observation, not proof of a lasting trend or a demonstrated cause. Aggregate global growth can coexist with weaker results in particular procedures, markets or hospital tenders.
Is Intuitive Surgical overvalued?
The available operating results show substantial growth and an expanding platform, while the valuation evidence here is a dated third-party forward P/E estimate. That is not enough to establish intrinsic value or declare the shares definitively overvalued. A premium valuation could be supported if procedure growth, system adoption and system economics prove durable; it could leave less room for error if growth or margins fall short of what the price assumes. The practical question is whether current expectations remain plausible after weighing those outcomes against the risks.
