Its announced curriculum goes well beyond installing a cluster: it includes remote access, application deployment, fleet management, GitOps, messaging, storage, functions, and work with sensors and real hardware. K3s is a compact Kubernetes distribution used in the course to explore those edge scenarios; the course is a learning resource, not a recommendation to run Kubernetes for every edge workload.
What is LFS156x?
The Linux Foundation and CNCF announced LFS156x on May 4, 2021 as an online course offered through edX. The announcement described it as roughly 15 hours of learning and named Alex Ellis as its developer. Its focus is applying Kubernetes concepts in edge environments, where computing takes place near the equipment or location involved rather than exclusively in a centralized data center.

The launch announcement quoted Ellis, identified as Founder of Inlets and OpenFaaS and a CNCF Ambassador: “K3s fills a very specific need and helps lower the barrier to entry for development and operation teams,” the CNCF announcement.

What does the course teach?
The published course outline spans the infrastructure, application, and operational problems involved in running cloud-native software at the edge. Topics announced by the Linux Foundation and CNCF include:
#1 Best Overall

- Edge-computing use cases and the roles of LF Edge and CNCF.
- K3s and k3sup, including a Raspberry Pi example and other low-power hardware.
- Application deployment, remote access, and operating with partial availability.
- Object storage, MQTT messaging, and OpenFaaS functions.
- Fleet management and GitOps approaches to deploying and updating applications.
- Messaging and interfacing with sensors and physical hardware.
This practical breadth matters: a working edge deployment is not just a Kubernetes installation. Devices may be remote, networks unreliable, and maintenance dependent on someone reaching the site. The course’s announced subjects address both deploying software and managing it when conditions differ from a consistently connected data center.
What changes when Kubernetes runs at the edge?
At the edge, processing is placed near the devices or locations generating or consuming data. That can make local processing useful, but it also changes the operating environment. Connectivity may be intermittent, only part of a fleet may be reachable, and a failed device can require an onsite visit. Remote access, fleet-wide updates, and designing for partial availability are therefore central concerns, not afterthoughts.
The Linux Foundation’s overview of edge computing under Kubernetes distinguishes between hardware attached directly to a Kubernetes host and separate remote devices. The ordinary Kubernetes node model is more straightforward when sensors or other hardware attach to the host. Separate devices may need an additional device-management layer; treating every sensor as though it were simply a Kubernetes node can lead to a poor fit.

When assessing an edge design, consider the relationship between compute nodes and devices, the workload’s resource needs, how the system behaves during network loss, how remote access and fleet management will work, which processor architectures and operating systems are supported, and what physical intervention a failure could require. The course introduces these concerns; it should not be read as evidence that one cluster design fits all deployments.
What is K3s used for?
K3s is a Kubernetes distribution designed to reduce the operational footprint of Kubernetes, making it relevant to constrained or edge settings. The Linux Foundation explainer describes it as CNCF-certified, notes support for ARM, and uses Raspberry Pi clusters as an example. That makes K3s a way to learn and explore Kubernetes on lower-power hardware, as well as a possible option to evaluate for suitable deployments.
The explainer gives historical estimates of about 50 MB of disk space and 300 MB of RAM for a single-node installation, and contrasts them with a 2 GB-per-node Kubernetes recommendation. These figures belong to that explainer’s publication period, not a current universal minimum or sizing guide. Actual requirements depend on K3s version, configuration, storage, and workload; consult the current K3s documentation and size for the deployment you intend to run.

The same explainer names x86_64, ARM64, and ARMv7 support. Architecture and operating-system compatibility can change, so check current K3s documentation against the specific board and OS before choosing hardware. A Raspberry Pi is a course example, not a guarantee that every model or operating-system combination will work.
Who should take the course?
The launch announcement presents the course for developers interested in cloud-native edge deployments and says it may also be useful to people already working with Kubernetes or edge computing. It is a reasonable fit if you want to explore how cluster deployment connects to remote operations, fleet management, messaging, storage, functions, and physical devices.
A third-party 2024 outline lists familiarity with the Linux command line and the ability to run Docker as prerequisites, with prior Kubernetes deployment experience helpful. Treat those as provisional preparation guidance rather than confirmed current enrollment requirements: the official launch announcement does not specify prerequisites. If you are new to Linux or containers, getting comfortable with those basics before starting is a sensible way to make the hands-on material more approachable.

Can you use a Raspberry Pi, and do you need to buy one?
The course announcement includes Raspberry Pi and other low-power hardware in its scope, so a Pi can be a plausible optional hands-on lab platform. The announcement does not specify a required model, memory size, storage, accessory list, or mandatory kit. You do not need to assume that hardware is required simply because the course uses it as an example. If you want to reproduce a physical lab, first check the current course materials and K3s compatibility for the exact board and operating system you plan to use.
How much does LFS156x cost, and is it still available?
The 2021 launch announcement described free audit access for ten weeks and a paid verified certificate with one year of course access.
