Those were plans described in interviews from 2018 and 2019—not verified results. The TechBullion archive lists an interview under this title, but the available page does not expose its full text or publication date.
What was MovieCoin?
Period sources described MovieCoin as a financial-technology venture applying blockchain and digital assets to entertainment finance, business transactions, and consumer payments. In interviews, Chairman and CEO Christopher Woodrow presented it as a way to address what he viewed as limited investor access, opaque financing arrangements, and weak liquidity in film finance. Those criticisms are Woodrow’s diagnosis, not an independent assessment of the entire film industry.

Woodrow’s proposal had two distinct token concepts: tokens associated with investments in film funds, and a separate utility token intended for payments among entertainment businesses and consumers. They served different proposed purposes and should not be treated as interchangeable. VentureBeat’s 2018 account describes both concepts as plans, not proof of an operating service.
How was the film-fund proposal supposed to work?
Pool investment across a slate
Rather than offering exposure to a single film, MovieCoin proposed “smart funds” that would finance portfolios of films. City A.M.’s August 2018 interview reported Woodrow’s plan for a debut fund to finance eight to ten theatrical films each year, sourced by the company’s media team. That was a stated target; the available accounts do not establish that the fund financed that slate. Woodrow characterized the planned program as one to finance and own a portfolio of wide-release feature films. City A.M.’s interview and VentureBeat’s report describe the proposal.

Issue tokens representing a fund interest
Investors in the proposed MovieCoin Smart Fund (MSF) would receive tokens described as digital securities representing an interest in the underlying portfolio. City A.M. said the tokens were intended to be bought, sold, and stored on Ethereum. This describes the planned design; it does not independently verify that tokens were issued or that the fund operated.
Make investment information more visible
Woodrow said blockchain could help investors see how capital was deployed and what residuals were owed over the life of an entertainment asset. That is a transparency objective, not evidence that film-level reporting or residual accounting was implemented. A ledger can record information, but the proposal’s value to investors would also depend on accurate source data, clear contractual rights, and reliable reporting practices.

What benefits did Woodrow expect?
Woodrow argued that investors without established studio relationships could face limited access to major film financing, while some available routes offered exposure to independent films with uncertain distribution or indirect exposure through studio parent companies. He also cited hard-to-compare contracts and a lack of a secondary market as problems. MovieCoin’s proposed response was to pool films, issue digital securities, and create a possible route to later trading. These were intended benefits, not demonstrated outcomes.
Forbes reported Woodrow’s expectation that MSF tokens could potentially trade on security-token exchanges after a one-year period. That was a proposed route to liquidity, not proof that an exchange listed the tokens or that investors could sell at a reliable price. A transfer mechanism alone does not ensure buyers, trading volume, or liquidity. Forbes’s interview on tokenization describes the proposal.

How did the proposal compare with crowdfunding?
The central distinction is what an investor would acquire and how the investment would be managed. MovieCoin described fund-level securities tied to a portfolio, whereas crowdfunding can refer to a range of arrangements, from donations and rewards to investment in an individual project. The available sources do not provide enough detail to compare MovieCoin’s eventual legal terms, film-level cash-flow allocation, or investor outcomes with a particular crowdfunding platform.

What did the interviews establish—and what remains unknown?
Historical interviews and podcast listings document that Woodrow discussed blockchain and entertainment finance. Penn Blockchain’s 2018 listing frames its conversation around his background and MovieCoin’s plan to bring liquidity to film financing; Craft Truck lists a January 2019 Business of Film episode as an in-depth discussion of next-generation film financing. These listings provide context for the idea, not evidence of the company’s execution. Penn Blockchain’s episode listing and Craft Truck’s episode listing describe those conversations.
