Internet Safety: Common Online Dangers and How to Avoid Them

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Online safety is mainly risk reduction: pause before responding, use a different channel to verify surprising requests, protect every important account with a unique password and multifactor authentication (MFA), install updates, and share less personal information. These habits reduce the chance that a scam, account takeover, malware infection, privacy breach, or harmful contact becomes costly.

What are the most common online dangers?

Most incidents fit a few overlapping patterns. The attacker may impersonate someone you trust, exploit a reused password, trick you into installing software, or collect enough personal information to misuse your identity.

Phishing, spoofing, smishing and vishing

Phishing uses email, fake websites or messages; smishing uses text messages; and vishing uses voice calls. Spoofing makes a sender name, phone number, web address or caller identity look legitimate. The goal may be to steal a login, redirect a payment, install malware or obtain personal details.

Fraud and investment scams

Urgent demands, implausible returns, unexpected prizes and requests to send money or disclose account details are warning signs. The FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) recorded 859,532 suspected internet-crime complaints and reported losses exceeding $16 billion in 2024; reported losses were 33% higher than in 2023. These are U.S. complaint-based figures, not a count of all crime or a prediction of an individual’s risk. Phishing/spoofing, extortion and personal-data breaches were the three largest complaint categories by number. Investment fraud was among the largest reported-loss categories; cryptocurrency-related investment fraud alone exceeded $6.5 billion in reported losses.

Credential compromise

A password exposed in one breach can unlock other accounts when it has been reused. Guessable passwords and answers to security questions create the same problem.

Malware and unsafe downloads

Malicious files, browser extensions, apps and unexpected attachments can steal data, encrypt files or give an attacker access. Fake software updates and pirated content are common delivery routes.

Privacy and identity misuse

Public profiles, location posts, birth dates, family details and answers to “security questions” can help criminals impersonate you or target your accounts. Treat any required security-question answer like a password.

Deepfakes and altered media

AI-generated or edited audio, images and video can imitate a familiar person or make a false event look real. Verify unusual, urgent or out-of-character content through an official site or a person you already know before acting or sharing.

Network risks

An unsecured router or weak Wi-Fi password can expose devices at home. Public Wi-Fi adds risk because you have less control over the network. A VPN is not established by the guidance used here as either required or sufficient protection.

How can I tell if a message is a phishing scam?

Do not decide from branding alone. Use this process whenever a message asks for a password, payment, code, personal information or an urgent action.

  1. Pause. Do not click, reply, open an attachment or call the number in the message.
  2. Inspect the details. Check the complete sender address, spelling, link destination and unexpected changes in tone. Be cautious even when a message appears to come from a colleague or family member.
  3. Check the request. Pressure, secrecy, unusual payment methods, gift cards, cryptocurrency, remote access or a request for a sign-in code are strong warning signs.
  4. Verify independently. Open the organization’s app or type its known web address yourself, or contact the person using a phone number you already have. Never use contact details supplied in the suspicious message.
  5. Report and delete. Use the service’s phishing-report option, then remove the message after preserving any evidence needed for a report.

Never share a one-time sign-in code. If a caller claims to be your bank, end the call and use the number on your card or statement.

How do I protect my personal information online?

Use a different long password for every account

A password manager can generate, store and autofill random passwords so uniqueness is practical across many accounts. CISA recommends passwords that are at least 16 characters, random and unique; the FTC advises aiming for at least 15 characters when you create a password yourself. These are agency recommendations, not a guarantee or a universal technical minimum.

  • Start with a reputable password manager or a supported built-in manager.
  • Protect the manager with a long master passphrase and MFA.
  • Do not reuse your email password anywhere else; email often controls password resets.
  • Do not place real biographical facts in security-question answers when a service permits alternatives.

Turn on MFA for important accounts

Enable MFA first for email, banking, payment, shopping, cloud-storage and social accounts. The FTC says an authenticator app or security key is more secure than text or email passcodes; FBI guidance also notes that some services support passkeys. Availability and recovery procedures vary by account and device.

Method Phishing resistance Compatibility and recovery
Text or email code Lower; codes can be intercepted or socially engineered Often widely supported; depends on phone or email access
Authenticator app Generally stronger than text or email Requires a compatible app and a recovery plan when a phone is lost
Security key Strong protection against many phishing attacks Optional physical device; account and device support varies, and a spare or recovery method may be needed
Passkey Designed to resist phishing Supported only by participating services and compatible devices; follow that service’s recovery options

Choose the strongest method that the account supports and that you can reliably recover. Store recovery codes somewhere safe and never approve an unexpected MFA prompt.

Keep software current

Turn on automatic updates, or install updates promptly, for your operating system, browser, apps, router firmware and security software. Updates frequently fix security weaknesses. Download apps and files from trusted sources and avoid unexpected attachments.

Is public Wi-Fi safe for banking?

Avoid banking, shopping and other sensitive transactions on public Wi-Fi. Use your mobile connection or wait for a trusted network instead. At home, change the router’s default administrator credentials, install firmware updates and set a strong, unique Wi-Fi password. These steps reduce exposure but do not make any network risk-free.

What should I do if I clicked a suspicious link?

  1. Stop interacting. Close the page and do not enter credentials, download files or approve prompts. If a file downloaded, do not open it.
  2. If you entered a password, change it immediately from the real site or app, then change it anywhere else it was reused. Sign out other sessions if the service offers that control.
  3. Protect the account. Turn on MFA, review recovery email and phone details, and remove unfamiliar devices, apps or forwarding rules.
  4. Contact financial providers. If payment or financial information was involved, call the institution using an official number and ask about stopping or disputing the transaction.
  5. Update and scan. Install pending updates and run the security tools already provided by your operating system. Seek professional help if pop-ups, unknown software or unusual account activity continue.
  6. Report. Report suspected internet crime to the FBI’s IC3. For suspected identity theft, use IdentityTheft.gov, which provides a tailored recovery plan.

Preserve the original message, website address, screenshots and transaction records before deleting anything needed for reporting.

How can I keep my child safe online?

  • Agree on which platforms, games and chat features are allowed, and revisit the rules as services change.
  • Set accounts to private where possible; limit direct messages, tagging, location sharing and public profile details.
  • Explain that requests for secrecy, private images, money, passwords or an offline meeting should be shared with a trusted adult.
  • Tell children they will not be blamed for reporting an uncomfortable interaction. Keep a calm, regular channel for questions rather than relying only on blocking tools.
  • Use built-in parental controls as one layer, not as a replacement for supervision and conversation.

If exploitation or a credible threat occurs, preserve messages and account details, avoid negotiating with the person, report the account through the platform and contact appropriate law enforcement or child-protection authorities.

Where should I report online crime or identity theft?

File suspected internet-crime reports with the FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3), even when you are unsure whether law enforcement can recover money. As FBI Director Kash Patel said, “Reporting is one of the first and most important steps in fighting crime so law enforcement can use this information to combat a variety of frauds and scams.” For suspected identity theft, use IdentityTheft.gov for a personalized recovery plan. Notify banks, card issuers and other affected providers promptly when a transaction or account is involved.
