Castor (Ricinus communis) is a striking ornamental plant, but its seeds contain ricin, a potent toxin. Castor oil is a different product: Poison Control says cooking, drying, pressing and refining the seeds removes ricin from the oil. The safety distinction is essential—commercial castor oil does not make raw seeds safe to eat or handle casually.
What is castor?
Castor, or Ricinus communis L., is a shrub or tree in the spurge family, Euphorbiaceae. Kew lists its native range as northeastern tropical Africa—Eritrea, Ethiopia and Somalia—and records it as introduced widely elsewhere. It grows in seasonally dry tropical biomes. “Castor bean” means the plant’s seed; it is not a true bean. The French National Museum of Natural History notes that the name Ricinus relates to the Latin word for ticks, because the seeds resemble ticks. Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle

Castor has large palmate leaves, typically divided into five to seven pointed lobes, and spiny seed capsules. The German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment describes plants often around 1.5–2.5 metres tall, with alternate, serrated purple-green leaves, red-to-yellow flowers in clusters and capsules holding marbled brown seeds. These are source-specific descriptions, not guarantees for every variety or growing condition. BfR: Castor Oil Plant

People grow castor as an ornamental in places such as pots, balconies and public green spaces. Its appearance can be appealing, but the presence of toxic seeds makes placement and handling a safety consideration.
Why castor beans are dangerous
Castor beans naturally contain ricin. Chewing or crushing seeds can release the toxin. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention explains that ricin enters cells and prevents them from making proteins they need. Poisoning effects depend on the route and amount of exposure; the CDC says there is no cure and treatment is supportive. CDC: Ricin, Chemical Fact Sheet (updated June 10, 2026)

Castor seeds and castor oil are not the same thing
Castor oil is pressed from castor seeds and processed. Poison Control describes cooking, drying and pressing followed by refining, and says these steps remove ricin from the oil. The CDC notes that ricin remains in the waste mash from castor-oil production. The oil and the seed-derived waste are therefore distinct materials; the safety of processed oil should not be used to infer that seeds or production waste are safe. Poison Control; CDC

What is castor oil used for?
MedlinePlus describes castor oil as a yellowish liquid used as a lubricant and in laxatives. The U.S. FDA-approved use discussed in the NLM’s StatPearls review is temporary relief of occasional constipation. That specific use does not establish broader medical or cosmetic claims sometimes made about castor oil; the review notes insufficient evidence for various additional claims.
