The company explored spinning out its Network and Edge Group (NEX) in July 2025, but in December 2025 decided to keep the group inside Intel. Intel’s latest cited product update, from its second-quarter 2026 release, describes ongoing Ethernet development rather than a transaction.
What Intel proposed in July 2025
ServeTheHome reported on July 25, 2025, citing an internal-customer memo reported by CRN, that Intel was considering a stand-alone company for its then-current Networking and Edge business, known as NEX.

The proposed company would have centered on critical communications, enterprise networking and Ethernet connectivity infrastructure. Intel planned to remain an anchor investor while seeking additional strategic investors. CRN’s report did not provide a timetable, and the proposal was not evidence that a sale or spin-off had closed.
Did Intel cancel the NEX spin-off?
Yes. In December 2025, CRN reported that Intel had ended its exploration of offloading NEX. Tom’s Hardware reported the same decision, last updated December 4, 2025.
#1 Best Overall
An Intel spokesperson told CRN: “After a thorough review of strategic options for NEX—including a potential standalone path—we determined the business is best positioned to succeed within Intel.” Tom’s Hardware quoted Intel explaining that “Keeping NEX in-house enables tighter integration between silicon, software and systems, strengthening customer offerings across AI, data center, and edge.” Those statements describe Intel’s rationale; they are not independent evidence that retaining the group will produce a particular financial or market outcome.
Proposed structure versus the final decision
| Question | July 2025 proposal | December 2025 outcome |
|---|---|---|
| Ownership | Stand-alone NEX company, with Intel retaining an anchor investment and seeking strategic investors | NEX retained within Intel |
| Status | Reported plan under consideration; no closing timeline was supplied | Intel decided not to proceed with the spin-off |
| Stated strategic logic | Separate ownership with outside strategic participation | Intel cited tighter integration of silicon, software and systems |
| Portfolio scope | NEX’s networking and communications portfolio at the time | Same group remains inside Intel; it should not be read as including all of Intel’s edge operations |
What “Networking and Edge” meant at the time
The name can be misleading because Intel had already changed the organization before the proposed transaction. In a September 16, 2024 employee message, then-CEO Pat Gelsinger said, “In NEX, we will be focusing the business on networking and telco.” Intel moved its Edge and Automotive businesses into its Client Computing Group (CCG) and moved Integrated Photonics Solutions into its Data Center and AI Group (DCAI).

- 【Compatible System】Support Windows 11/10 64-bit, WiFi and Bluetooth drivers need to be installed on the running PC (search "AX210NGW" from Intel website to download and install wifi and Bluetooth drivers).
Consequently, the 2025 proposal concerned the NEX networking and telecommunications portfolio as then organized. It did not mean that every Intel product or business associated with edge computing was part of a potential NEX sale.
What Intel’s latest product update shows
Intel’s second-quarter 2026 earnings release announced the Ethernet E835 portfolio, described as scaling from 10GbE to 200GbE for cloud, AI, enterprise, edge and telecommunications infrastructure. A copy of the release also appears in an SEC-hosted filing.

This establishes continued Intel Ethernet product activity after the decision to retain NEX. It does not establish NEX’s stand-alone revenue, profitability, valuation or a new transaction plan; Intel’s release did not report those items separately.

What happened to Intel NEX?
NEX remained an Intel business after the company reviewed a possible stand-alone structure. Its scope had already been narrowed to networking and telecommunications after the 2024 reorganization.
Was the proposed sale completed?
No. The July report described a plan under consideration, not a completed divestiture.
