Short answer: a UPS (uninterruptible power supply) makes electricity available during an outage and may regulate poor utility power. An intelligent rack PDU (power distribution unit) takes that source and distributes it among equipment in a rack, while reporting electrical data and, on switched models, controlling individual outlets. A smart PDU cannot keep a server running when the utility feed fails unless it is connected to a UPS, generator, or another live source. In a typical rack, the order is utility or generator → UPS → intelligent PDU → servers, switches, and storage.
What a UPS does
A UPS is the device responsible for ride-through. It sits between the building supply and your critical load, detects a utility interruption, and supplies energy from its battery or other stored-energy system. The connected equipment continues operating for the period allowed by the UPS capacity, battery condition, and load. When a generator is present, the UPS bridges the gap while the generator starts; Vertiv describes the UPS as picking up the power load while the generator ramps up.

UPS behavior is not identical across models. The topology determines how incoming power is handled and how quickly the load is transferred to battery power.
Line-interactive UPS
A line-interactive design normally passes utility power through an automatic voltage-regulation circuit and uses its inverter when the input is outside an acceptable range or fails. It is often selected for offices and small server rooms where moderate voltage correction and short backup time are sufficient. The exact transfer time, regulation range, waveform, and allowable load are model-specific.

Online (double-conversion) UPS
An online UPS continuously converts incoming AC to DC and then back to regulated AC. Because the inverter is already feeding the load, there is no normal transfer delay when utility power disappears. This topology is commonly considered when sensitive equipment, unstable utility power, or a demanding installation justifies its higher complexity and energy use. Confirm efficiency, bypass behavior, and operating modes in the model documentation rather than assuming every online unit behaves the same way.
Capabilities that vary by UPS
- Runtime: battery runtime decreases as the connected wattage rises. Published runtime charts are tied to a particular battery configuration and load.
- Capacity: manufacturers state both VA and watts. The lower practical limit for your equipment, plus a growth margin, governs sizing.
- Power conditioning: regulation, filtering, and waveform quality depend on topology and model.
- Shutdown signaling: a USB, serial, or network connection can tell a server to shut down cleanly before the battery is exhausted.
- Network management: some models expose alarms, runtime, input/output readings, and remote controls.
- Bypass and serviceability: maintenance bypasses and replaceable or external battery modules are optional features, not universal ones.
A UPS therefore answers the question, “Where does power come from when the utility feed is interrupted?” It does not automatically solve rack receptacle count, outlet-level rebooting, or per-device energy accounting.
What an intelligent PDU does
A rack PDU is an electrical distribution strip designed for a cabinet. It accepts one or more incoming feeds and provides multiple outlets for servers, network switches, storage, and other rack equipment. Eaton describes a basic rack PDU as distributing AC power from a UPS, generator, or utility source to multiple devices. Vertiv describes the rack PDU as distributing power to the IT equipment in an individual cabinet.

A metered model may report current or power at the whole-unit or branch level without allowing any outlet to be switched. A switched model adds remote outlet control. Some products combine both functions.
Metered and monitored functions
- Unit-level metering: reports the total current, power, or energy for the PDU.
- Branch-level metering: reports separate input branches where the PDU has multiple feeds.
- Outlet-level metering: identifies the consumption of individual receptacles; this is a higher feature tier and should not be assumed.
- Alarms and thresholds: warns when current, power, or temperature crosses a configured limit.
- Environmental probes: compatible models accept temperature, humidity, or other sensors through dedicated ports.
Switched-outlet functions
A switched PDU lets an authorized administrator turn individual outlets or outlet groups off and on over the network. That makes a remote reboot possible for a hung modem, appliance, or server that has stopped responding but still has a live power supply. Sequencing can also be useful when equipment must start in a defined order. Switching an outlet is a power action, not an operating-system shutdown; use it only when the device and application can tolerate an abrupt loss of power.

Management interfaces and security
Managed generations may provide SNMP, SSH, LDAP integration, environmental monitoring, and mass-configuration features. Interface names and supported protocol versions differ by firmware. Place the management interface on an appropriate administrative network, change default credentials, restrict who can issue outlet commands, and keep firmware and certificates under your normal change-control process. A networked PDU is an operational device, not merely a passive extension cord.
Most PDUs do not provide surge protection. Eaton notes that a rack PDU is typically connected to a UPS, so surge protection is expected upstream. Do not treat the presence of a display, network port, or “intelligent” label as evidence of battery backup or surge suppression.

UPS versus intelligent PDU: the functional difference
| Question | UPS | Intelligent PDU |
|---|---|---|
| Primary job | Provide conditioned, battery-backed power during interruptions. | Distribute an available feed to multiple rack devices and expose monitoring or control. |
| What happens in an outage? | Transfers the load to stored energy for the available runtime. | Continues passing whatever power is present; it does not create power. |
| Battery included? | Yes, within the UPS system; capacity and runtime vary. | No battery function unless a separate, specifically designed system is involved. |
| Outlet control | Usually controls the UPS output as a whole; some models have switched groups. | Switched models control individual outlets or groups remotely. |
| Telemetry | Input/output voltage, load, battery, runtime, alarms, and related values vary by model. | Current, power, energy, branches, outlets, and environmental data vary by model. |
| Typical physical role | Rackmount or floor-standing source and protection equipment. | Vertical 0U or horizontal 1U/2U distribution equipment inside a rack. |
The devices are complementary. A UPS protects availability; a PDU organizes and manages the distribution of that protected power.
Do you need both?
Use both when the rack needs battery ride-through and practical distribution or operations control. The normal arrangement is:

Choose both when these conditions apply
- The equipment must stay online through short interruptions or while a generator starts.
- The rack has more devices than can be connected conveniently to the UPS output.
- You need per-rack or per-outlet measurements for capacity planning, alerting, or chargeback.
- Remote rebooting can avoid a technician visit to a remote or lightly staffed site.
- Environmental probes or centralized SNMP/SSH management are part of your operating procedure.
A basic PDU may be enough when
If the rack already receives protected power from an upstream UPS and you only need additional receptacles and tidy cabling, a basic PDU can be sufficient. It will not provide outlet telemetry or remote switching, but those functions may not justify the added configuration and security responsibilities.
A PDU alone is not an outage solution
With a utility feed connected directly to a PDU, a blackout removes power from every connected device. The PDU may continue to report status while its own electronics have power, but monitoring is not backup energy. To keep servers running, put a correctly sized UPS or another continuously available source upstream.
How to select the UPS
1. Calculate real load and headroom
List the watts for every device that will be powered, including switches, storage, KVM equipment, and any devices that start with a high inrush current. Use measured values when possible. Select a UPS whose continuous watt rating exceeds the expected load and leave room for growth; VA alone can hide a poor power-factor match. A runtime chart is meaningful only at the stated load and battery configuration.
2. Select the topology
Line-interactive units can suit stable facilities that need voltage regulation and short backup. Online double-conversion units are the more appropriate candidate for sensitive loads or unstable input where eliminating a transfer event matters. Compare efficiency, heat output, noise, bypass operation, and service requirements alongside the topology label.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
3. Set a runtime and shutdown policy
Decide whether the goal is a few minutes to ride through brief events, enough time for an orderly shutdown, or extended operation until a generator is stable. Connect the UPS management interface to the server or virtualization platform when automated shutdown is required. An external battery module can extend runtime only when the manufacturer lists it as compatible with that exact UPS model and part number.
4. Verify electrical and mechanical compatibility
- Input and output voltage, frequency, phase, and receptacle type.
- Input plug and cord rating, including the facility’s branch-circuit capacity.
- Rack height, depth, rail kit, weight, and front-to-back airflow.
- Maintenance bypass, hot-swappable batteries, and replacement intervals.
- Network-management method and integration with your alerting or shutdown software.
How to select the intelligent PDU
Input and outlet electrical specification
Match the PDU input amperage and phase to the UPS output and the branch circuit. Count the required outlets and identify the connector types, commonly C13 and C19 or the local equivalent. Check the plug, cord length, frequency, and derating rules that apply in your region. A PDU with the wrong input connector cannot be made safe with an improvised adapter.
Form factor and rack layout
Vertical 0U PDUs preserve horizontal rack units and are mounted beside the equipment rails. Horizontal 1U or 2U models occupy rack space but may be easier to reach in a shallow cabinet. Measure depth, door clearance, cable bend radius, and the location of the UPS receptacles before ordering.
Decide how much intelligence you need
| Requirement | Minimum feature to look for |
|---|---|
| Know whether the rack is approaching its electrical limit | Unit-level or branch-level metering with threshold alarms. |
| Identify one unusually heavy device | Outlet-level metering. |
| Reboot an unresponsive device remotely | Switched outlets, authenticated remote access, and event logging. |
| Track room conditions | Compatible environmental-probe ports and sensors. |
| Integrate with an operations platform | Documented SNMP, SSH, directory integration, and bulk-configuration support. |
Confirm whether readings are instantaneous, averaged, or accumulated energy, and whether alarms are configured per outlet, branch, or whole unit. Those distinctions affect how useful the data will be.
Installation and commissioning procedure
- Document the design. Record the facility circuit, UPS output, PDU input rating, rack position, device loads, and the intended outlet for each device. For dual-cord equipment, document which cord goes to which power path.
- Inspect before energizing. Check the rack rails or 0U brackets, grounding and bonding provisions, plug types, cord ratings, and airflow. Do not exceed the circuit, UPS, or PDU rating.
- Connect the upstream source. De-energize according to your site’s electrical procedure, connect the PDU to the UPS output, and verify that the connector and phase match. If a generator or bypass is part of the design, confirm the transfer sequence with the responsible facilities team.
- Connect loads by priority. Put network and control equipment that must remain available on the intended UPS-backed outlets. Keep noncritical heaters, monitors, or laboratory accessories off the protected circuit unless they are part of the load calculation.
- Configure management. Assign a management address, change default credentials, set time synchronization, enable only required protocols, and place the interface on the administrative network. Configure thresholds, recipients, and escalation rules.
- Add and label sensors. Install supported temperature or humidity probes where they represent the rack condition, label their locations, and set alarms that reflect the equipment’s operating limits.
- Test outlet control cautiously. With an approved maintenance window, switch one noncritical outlet and verify the expected device response. Test reboot groups and startup delays before relying on them in an incident.
- Test the power path. Follow the UPS manufacturer’s test procedure, observe the transfer or inverter operation, verify that the PDU remains powered, and confirm that alarms and shutdown signaling reach the intended systems. Never simulate an outage by randomly unplugging a live high-load installation.
- Record the baseline. Save normal input, output, current, power, battery, runtime, and environmental readings. Keep the topology diagram, firmware versions, credentials process, and replacement-battery part numbers with the rack documentation.
Common architectures and decisions
Single UPS and single PDU
This is the simplest protected rack: one UPS feeds one PDU, which feeds the equipment. It is easy to operate but has no power-path redundancy. A failed UPS, PDU, cord, or upstream circuit can affect the whole rack.

Dual-cord equipment with two power paths
Servers and storage with two independent power supplies can connect one cord to each path, often using separate UPS systems and PDUs. Verify that the equipment supports the intended redundancy mode and that each path can carry the required load if the other is unavailable. Do not assume that two cords create resilience when both PDUs share one UPS or one branch circuit.
Generator-backed facility
The UPS carries the load during the generator’s start and transfer period. Once the generator is stable, the UPS may return to normal input operation. Confirm generator compatibility, frequency tolerance, bypass behavior, and fuel or maintenance procedures with the facilities design; a PDU still only distributes the resulting source.
Remote or unmanned cabinet
A managed PDU is most valuable when travel is expensive or slow. Combine outlet switching with UPS network management and a documented recovery sequence. Remote power cycling should be the last step after checking application health, network reachability, and console access.
Troubleshooting: symptoms and fixes
| Symptom | Likely issue | Checks and corrective action |
|---|---|---|
| Everything turns off during a blackout | The PDU is connected directly to utility power, or the UPS is undersized or failed. | Trace the one-line path, confirm the PDU input is a UPS output, inspect UPS alarms and battery health, and compare measured load with UPS watt capacity. |
| PDU shows overload alarms | Connected load or startup inrush exceeds the branch, PDU, or UPS limit. | Measure the load, remove noncritical devices, redistribute across correctly rated circuits, and recalculate growth margin. |
| Remote outlet command has no effect | Outlet is not switched, control is disabled, the network path is blocked, or permissions are insufficient. | Verify the model feature set, outlet state, account role, management VLAN reachability, and event log. Never assume a metered outlet is switchable. |
| Server reboots unexpectedly after a short dip | UPS transfer, battery, topology, or load problem. | Review UPS event history and waveform/transfer specifications, test with a known-good battery, and verify that the load is within the published limits. |
| UPS runtime is much shorter than expected | Higher actual load, aged batteries, added equipment, or a runtime figure measured under different conditions. | Compare current watts with the runtime chart, inspect battery age and temperature, and test after maintenance. Add only a listed external battery module when more runtime is required. |
| Network management is unreliable | Addressing, DNS, time, firmware, or security-policy mismatch. | Check link and VLAN configuration, synchronize time, review certificates and protocol versions, update firmware under change control, and monitor logs. |
Safety, maintenance, and lifecycle planning
- Keep current below the rating of every component in the chain: branch circuit, UPS output, PDU input, and individual receptacle.
- Use the supplied or correctly rated cords; do not defeat grounding or use unapproved adapters.
- Maintain airflow and clearances around UPS batteries and power electronics.
- Review battery condition, self-test results, alarms, and replacement dates on a scheduled basis.
- Back up PDU and UPS configurations and record firmware changes before upgrades.
- Recalculate capacity after adding servers, storage, accelerators, or high-inrush equipment.
- Use a maintenance bypass or a planned shutdown procedure when servicing equipment that cannot tolerate an interruption.
Current models, firmware revisions, regional electrical standards, inventory, and prices change. Verify the manufacturer’s current specification and the requirements of your facility before purchase; no single price, adoption rate, or failure-rate statistic establishes that an intelligent PDU is worthwhile for every installation.
Decision checklist
- Need power during an outage? Start with a UPS sized in watts and VA for the measured load, required runtime, and growth.
- Need more rack receptacles? Add a PDU whose input and outlet connectors match the UPS and equipment.
- Need visibility? Choose metering at the level—unit, branch, or outlet—that answers your operational question.
- Need remote reboot? Choose switched outlets, then validate permissions, logging, sequencing, and device tolerance for hard power cycles.
- Need environmental data? Confirm sensor ports, supported probes, alarm ranges, and management integration.
- Need resilience? Design separate power paths end to end; two intelligent PDUs fed by one UPS do not provide UPS redundancy.
Bottom line
A UPS and an intelligent PDU solve different problems. The UPS is the source of backup and conditioning; the intelligent PDU is the rack’s distribution, measurement, and optional outlet-control layer. For most protected server racks that need both availability and operational visibility, use the chain utility or generator → UPS → intelligent PDU → equipment. Use a basic PDU when distribution is all you need, and never present a smart PDU by itself as battery backup.
