A June 2026 report showed a photograph said to depict Intel’s new LGA1954 socket, but it did not identify the motherboard maker or model—and it does not establish that the pictured board uses Q970 or B960. Those chipset names and their reported features come from a separate leak about Intel’s upcoming Nova Lake-S desktop platform, not a completed retail-board announcement.
What the LGA1954 photo actually shows
VideoCardz reported on June 4, 2026, that a photo attributed to LC Tech Leaks showed a claimed LGA1954 socket in an undisclosed location in Taipei. The report associates the socket with Nova Lake-S and Intel’s expected 900-series desktop platform, but names neither a board vendor nor a motherboard model. VideoCardz’s socket report is therefore evidence of a reported socket sighting—not a product announcement or confirmation of a Q970 or B960 board.

Where Q970 and B960 fit in the reported chipset lineup
A separate leaked table attributed to Jaykihn and reported by Tom’s Hardware and TechSpot on February 9, 2026, lists five anticipated 900-series chipsets: B960, Z970, Q970, Z990 and W980. The leak positions Q970 as a performance-mainstream desktop option with business manageability features. It places B960 and Z970 at 34 total PCIe lanes, Q970 at 44, and Z990 and W980 at 48. These are leak-derived specifications, not Intel-confirmed retail details.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems| Reported chipset | Total PCIe lanes | Reported distinction |
|---|---|---|
| B960 | 34 | Leak places it among the lower-lane options; further details are not established here (Tom’s Hardware’s report of the Jaykihn leak). |
| Z970 | 34 | Leak places it among the lower-lane options; further details are not established here (Tom’s Hardware’s report of the Jaykihn leak). |
| Q970 | 44 | Reported business manageability support; no CPU, BCLK or memory overclocking (Tom’s Hardware’s report of the Jaykihn leak). |
| Z990 | 48 | Leak distinguishes it by CPU and BCLK overclocking (Tom’s Hardware’s report of the Jaykihn leak). |
| W980 | 48 | Listed in the leak; further distinction is not established here (Tom’s Hardware’s report of the Jaykihn leak). |
The table describes leaked chipset claims, not independently verified performance or final board capabilities. The lane totals are a broad comparison, not a guarantee of how a particular motherboard will route or expose connectivity.
#1 Best Overall
- Supports 12th/13th Gen Intel Core, Pentium Gold and Celeron processors for LGA 1700 socket
- Supports DDR4 Memory, Dual Channel DDR4 4800+MHz (OC)
- Core Boost : With premium layout and digital power design to support more cores and provide better performance
- Memory Boost: Advanced technology to deliver pure data signals for the best performance, stability and compatibility
- Lightning Fast Experience: PCIe 4.0, Lightning Gen4 x4 M.2 with M.2 Shield Frozr
Q970’s reported connectivity and limits
The Jaykihn table reproduced by Tom’s Hardware attributes these specifications to Q970:
- 44 total PCIe lanes.
- Eight chipset PCIe 5.0 lanes and 12 chipset PCIe 4.0 lanes.
- Eight SATA 3.0 ports.
- Two processor TB4/USB4 ports.
- No CPU, BCLK or memory overclocking.
- vPro/standard manageability support.
These figures and capabilities are claims from a leak, not official Intel specifications. In particular, the reported manageability feature may make Q970 relevant to business systems, while the reported lack of overclocking means it should not be treated as an enthusiast tuning chipset. The table does not establish which features a specific future board will implement. Tom’s Hardware’s report provides the Q970 figures and context.

Will a current LGA1851 motherboard work?
Do not assume so. Reports describe LGA1954 as a new socket expected to replace LGA1851, which means an existing LGA1851 motherboard should not be presumed compatible with a Nova Lake-S processor. Final compatibility, including any platform-specific requirements, needs confirmation from Intel and the motherboard manufacturer. The socket relationship is described in PC Gamer’s coverage of the chipset leak.

When might Nova Lake-S boards arrive?
TechSpot reported that Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan confirmed Nova Lake timing for the second half of 2026. That broad processor timing does not confirm when desktop Nova Lake-S CPUs—or motherboards using LGA1954—will be available. VideoCardz noted retail availability could move closer to CES 2027, so the board schedule remains uncertain rather than established by the socket photo. See TechSpot’s chipset and timing coverage and the VideoCardz report.

What prospective buyers should take from the leak
- The photo report concerns a claimed LGA1954 socket, not a named retail motherboard.
- Q970 and B960 are names in a leaked list of anticipated chipsets; their retail specifications and board implementations are not confirmed.
- On the leaked figures, Q970 sits above B960 and Z970 in total lane count, but below Z990 and W980. Its reported business manageability and lack of overclocking are more useful distinctions than the chipset name alone.
- Wait for Intel and board-vendor compatibility and product specifications before choosing a motherboard or assuming an existing board can be reused.
