For most sustained, heavy multitasking, an AMD Ryzen mini PC is the better starting point when the two systems have comparable power limits, cooling and memory. AMD Ryzen PRO and Ryzen AI Max processors show strong results in multi-core rendering, transcoding and integrated graphics. Intel Core Ultra can be the better choice for software that specifically uses Intel media engines, its NPU or Intel-optimized AI features.

The processor name alone is not enough to decide. A mini PC with 32GB of fast, soldered memory and conservative cooling can behave very differently from another machine using the same chip with 64GB or 128GB, a higher sustained power limit and a larger heat sink. Compare the complete configuration, not just the logo on the case.

Quick verdict: which platform should you buy?

Your priority Better starting point Why
Many CPU-heavy applications running together AMD Ryzen Ryzen PRO comparisons show an advantage in multi-core rendering, transcoding and Cinebench multi-core at matched power levels.
3D work or demanding integrated graphics AMD Ryzen, especially Ryzen AI Max Recent Ryzen AI Max systems pair many CPU cores with large Radeon graphics resources and can use up to 128GB of unified memory.
Intel-specific media, AI or NPU software Intel Core Ultra Some applications use Intel’s media engines or NPU more effectively; Intel reports large gains in selected Procyon AI tests.
Virtual machines, containers and large local AI models AMD Ryzen AI Max, if the system has enough memory Configurations can scale to 16 Zen 5 cores and 128GB unified memory, although availability and upgradeability vary by mini PC.
Quiet office work, browsing and video calls Either Cooling design, fan tuning, memory capacity and SSD performance matter more than the CPU family for this workload.

Use that table as a first filter, then verify the exact processor model, memory, sustained wattage, cooling and software support. The same Core Ultra or Ryzen label can represent very different generations and performance limits.

What “multitasking” means on a mini PC

Multitasking is not one benchmark. Opening a browser, email, a spreadsheet and a video call mainly tests responsiveness and memory capacity. Running a code build while compressing files, exporting video and keeping several virtual machines active stresses sustained multi-core throughput. Editing 4K footage adds media-engine and GPU requirements, while local AI tools may use a CPU, integrated GPU or NPU depending on their software support.

Ideal for gaming, video editing, and multitasking, it provides expansive and crisp multi-display support.

A useful evaluation therefore has three layers:

  • Interactive responsiveness: single-core speed, storage latency, browser behavior and how quickly foreground applications react while background tasks run.
  • Sustained parallel throughput: multi-core CPU performance during rendering, compilation, transcoding, compression and simultaneous workloads.
  • Accelerator performance: integrated graphics, video encode/decode blocks and AI engines that can move work off the CPU.

Mini PCs can sustain a benchmark for only as long as their cooling system allows. A short burst score may look impressive but say little about a 30-minute render or an afternoon of compiling. Look for tests performed at a stated power limit and check whether the machine’s normal performance mode uses that limit.

What the published Ryzen comparisons show

Ryzen PRO 8945HS versus Core Ultra 9 185H

AMD Performance Labs reports that the Ryzen PRO 8945HS was up to 9% faster than the Core Ultra 9 185H in Cinebench R24 nT multitasking at a 45W processor limit. The same vendor comparison lists up to 21% faster Blender CPU rendering and up to 9% faster Geekbench 6 single-core responsiveness for the Ryzen part.

These are AMD’s own tests, so treat the percentages as an indication of what that particular comparison showed, not as a universal margin for every mini PC. They are most relevant when the two machines have similar cooling and are allowed to hold approximately 45W for a sustained workload.

Ryzen PRO 8840HS versus Core Ultra 7 155H

At a 28W limit, AMD reports up to 41% faster Blender Classroom CPU rendering, 43% faster 3DMark Wildlife Extreme graphics and 49% faster HandBrake transcoding for the Ryzen PRO 8840HS compared with the Core Ultra 7 155H. The spread illustrates why a multitasking buyer should examine the workload mix: the advantage is not limited to one CPU benchmark and includes graphics and video conversion paths.

Again, these are vendor-reported results. Different memory configurations, drivers, firmware and fan profiles can change the outcome, and a mini PC may run either processor below the comparison’s stated limit.

Ryzen AI Max for high-memory multitasking

AMD’s Ryzen AI Max family extends the platform beyond ordinary office multitasking. The architecture can scale to 16 Zen 5 CPU cores, up to 40 RDNA 3.5 graphics compute units and an XDNA 2 NPU rated at up to 50 TOPS. AMD also describes systems with as much as 128GB of unified memory.

That memory ceiling is important for developers running several virtual machines, creators keeping large assets in memory and users experimenting with local AI models. Unified memory is shared by the CPU and integrated GPU, so a large allocation can be useful for graphics or AI, but the amount available to applications depends on the system configuration and operating-system reservations.

Where Core Ultra can be the better choice

AI acceleration is software-dependent

Intel’s performance index compares a Core Ultra 9 386H system with a Ryzen AI 9 465 system, each using 32GB of LPDDR5 memory. In the listed tests, Intel reports up to 81% faster GPU Procyon AI computer-vision performance and up to 44% faster NPU Procyon AI computer-vision performance.

Those figures apply to the specified Procyon workloads and test setups. They do not mean every AI application will run 81% faster on Intel. An application must support the relevant GPU or NPU path, and drivers and framework versions can determine which accelerator is actually used. Check your software’s supported backends before buying for AI.

Media engines and platform features

Some video applications are tuned for Intel’s integrated media hardware and may provide a smoother export or playback workflow even when a general CPU benchmark favors Ryzen. Intel systems can also offer a port selection, display configuration or business-management feature that a particular AMD mini PC lacks. If your workflow depends on a specific codec, hardware encoder, docking standard or enterprise-management function, verify support on the exact model rather than assuming it from the processor family.

A real mini-PC comparison: EVO-T2 versus M5 AI

TechRadar’s June 30, 2026 comparison places an Intel Core Ultra X7 358H system, the GMKtec EVO-T2, against an AMD Ryzen AI 395 Max system, the Bosgame M5 AI. The published configurations are not CPU-only equivalents: the Intel machine has 64GB of LPDDR5X-8533 memory and 512GB of storage, while the AMD machine has 128GB of DDR5 and 2TB of storage.

Memory 64GB LPDDR5X-8533 128GB DDR5
Storage 512GB 2TB
Graphics Intel Arc B390 Radeon 8060S
3DMark Wild Life 45,211 70,014
3DMark Fire Strike 14,393 26,917
3DMark Time Spy 7,621 11,317
Cinebench 2024 single-core 123 115

The AMD system leads the listed graphics tests by a wide margin, while the Intel system scores higher on the single Cinebench 2024 single-core result. The different memory and storage capacities also affect the practical experience: 128GB gives more room for virtual machines and large projects, and a 2TB drive reduces the need for immediate upgrades. The comparison demonstrates why a product review result should not be treated as a pure processor ranking.

TechRadar reviewer Mark Pickavance concluded that Intel’s B390 graphics still could not match the Radeon 8060S in that comparison. That is a statement about those tested systems and their configurations, not every Core Ultra and Ryzen mini PC.

The hardware details that decide multitasking performance

Memory capacity and type

For demanding multitasking, 32GB is a practical floor. It allows a browser with many tabs, office applications, a meeting client and development tools to coexist without constant paging. Choose 64GB when you use virtual machines, large creative applications, data tools or multiple containers. Consider 128GB for several VMs, large codebases, high-resolution media projects or local AI experimentation.

Confirm whether the memory is soldered, socketed or unified. Soldered LPDDR memory can be fast but cannot be expanded later. A socketed DDR5 design may trade some efficiency for an upgrade path. Unified memory on Ryzen AI Max can serve both CPU and GPU, but it is also generally fixed at purchase. Check the exact capacity before ordering; a processor’s theoretical maximum does not guarantee that a mini PC offers it.

The unified memory architecture allows more flexible resource allocation between CPU and GPU, making it ideal for local AI inference, large model deployment, video production, engineering applications, and advanced creative workflows.

Sustained power and cooling

Ask for the long-term processor power limit, not just the advertised boost wattage. A compact computer may briefly boost to a high level and then reduce clocks when the heat sink saturates. Larger heat pipes, a well-designed fan curve and unobstructed ventilation help maintain performance during renders and builds.

Noise is part of the trade-off. A high-power mode may improve a multi-core score while producing fan noise that is distracting in a meeting or recording room. Look for independent measurements of sustained workloads and acoustics, and check whether the benchmark used a performance mode unavailable in normal operation.

Integrated graphics and media support

Integrated GPUs matter when you have no discrete graphics card. They accelerate timelines, browser rendering, multiple displays, light 3D work and some AI tasks. Compare the GPU architecture and compute resources, but also verify application support for hardware encoding and decoding. A nominally faster GPU is not automatically better if your editor or conferencing software cannot use it.

Storage, ports and expansion

Multitasking can expose storage bottlenecks when the operating system, project files, virtual disks and scratch media share one drive. Prefer a system with a fast NVMe slot and, where possible, a second slot or an accessible replacement path. Check for 2.5Gb Ethernet, USB4 or Thunderbolt-class connectivity, enough display outputs and support for the peripherals you already own.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An external GPU can change the value equation for a system with fast external connectivity, but support, enclosure cost and bandwidth vary. Do not count on that upgrade unless the manufacturer documents the required port and operating-system support.

Which platform fits common workloads?

Office work, browsing and Teams-style meetings

Either platform is suitable when configured with at least 32GB of memory and an SSD. Prioritize quiet cooling, a reliable webcam and microphone setup, dual-display support, Wi-Fi quality and warranty service. Paying for a higher-end CPU may not improve this workload if the machine already has enough memory.

Software development and containers

Favor the processor with the stronger sustained multi-core result in the exact mini PC you are considering. More cores reduce build and test times, while 64GB or more prevents virtual machines and containers from competing with the host system. Verify Linux support, firmware options and virtualization features if that is your development environment.

Video editing and transcoding

Compare the application’s hardware-encoding support before choosing. AMD’s Ryzen PRO 8840HS comparison showed a substantial HandBrake advantage at 28W, while Intel can be attractive when your editor is optimized for Intel media engines. Also budget for fast, expandable storage; CPU performance cannot compensate for a drive that fills during a project.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3D rendering and graphics-heavy work

AMD is the stronger starting point when the candidate uses a capable Ryzen AI Max integrated GPU and adequate cooling. The cited EVO-T2 and M5 AI comparison shows how much the graphics result can differ between current integrated designs. Confirm display outputs, memory capacity and application compatibility, because integrated graphics borrow system memory.

Local AI and machine-learning experiments

First identify whether your framework uses the CPU, GPU or NPU. Intel’s reported Procyon gains apply only to supported AI paths, while Ryzen AI Max combines a large integrated GPU, an NPU and a high memory ceiling. For models that exceed dedicated accelerator memory, the ability to configure 64GB or 128GB may matter more than a short benchmark score.

A fair buying checklist

  1. Write down the workload. Separate interactive apps, sustained CPU work, video codecs, graphics tasks and AI frameworks instead of using “multitasking” as a single requirement.
  2. Match the exact processor. Record the full model number, generation, core and thread count and stated power range.
  3. Check sustained performance evidence. Prefer multi-core, Blender, HandBrake or code-build results performed at a documented power limit.
  4. Specify memory before comparing prices. Choose 32GB, 64GB or 128GB based on your workload, and confirm whether it is upgradeable or soldered.
  5. Inspect cooling and noise. Look for long-run test results, fan behavior and unobstructed intake and exhaust paths.
  6. Verify accelerator support. Check your editor, AI framework and conferencing software for Intel, AMD GPU or NPU support.
  7. Audit ports and storage. Count displays, USB4 or Thunderbolt-class ports, network speed, NVMe slots and expansion options.
  8. Compare the complete configuration. Include the supplied RAM and SSD, operating system, warranty and any upgrades needed to make the system usable.
  9. Check regional availability. Mini-PC configurations and firmware can differ by market; confirm the exact specification on the seller’s listing before purchase.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Comparing only brand names: A low-power Ryzen can lose to a better-cooled Core Ultra, and the reverse is also true. Compare model, power and cooling together.
  • Treating vendor percentages as universal: AMD and Intel publish useful directional data, but each uses selected systems and software. Look for independent results in your applications.
  • Ignoring memory differences: A 128GB system can feel substantially more capable than a 64GB system before the CPU becomes the limit. Account for capacity in the comparison.
  • Using single-core scores to predict rendering: Foreground responsiveness and sustained multi-core throughput are different behaviors. Use the test that resembles your work.
  • Assuming an NPU helps every AI task: The application and framework must support it. Otherwise the workload may run on the CPU or GPU.
  • Buying an unserviceable configuration: Soldered memory and a single storage slot limit future upgrades. Check the internal layout and warranty terms first.

Final recommendation

Choose an AMD Ryzen mini PC when your priority is sustained parallel work, rendering, transcoding, stronger integrated graphics or the largest practical memory configuration. Ryzen AI Max is particularly compelling for compact workstations that need many cores, a powerful iGPU and up to 128GB of unified memory.

Choose Intel Core Ultra when your applications demonstrably benefit from Intel media hardware or NPU acceleration, or when a particular Intel model offers the ports, noise level, support policy and measured performance you need. The decisive purchase is the complete mini PC: processor tier, sustained wattage, cooling, RAM, storage, accelerator support and upgrade path.
