Intel Core 5 205H vs AMD Ryzen 7 8845HS: Which CPU Should You Choose?

By Freedom251 Team · · 10 min read

For most buyers, the AMD Ryzen 7 8845HS is the safer choice. It has eight cores and 16 threads, a Radeon 780M integrated GPU, and a documented Ryzen AI NPU. The Intel Core 5 205H also has eight CPU cores, but only 12 threads and disabled integrated graphics, so a laptop built around it needs a discrete GPU for normal graphics output.

That does not make the Core 5 205H a bad option. It can be the better purchase when the complete laptop is substantially cheaper, includes a capable discrete GPU, or offers a better screen, battery, memory, storage configuration and warranty. The right comparison is between complete laptops, not processor names alone.

The biggest difference: graphics hardware

Ryzen 7 8845HS includes a usable integrated GPU

The Ryzen 7 8845HS includes Radeon 780M graphics with 12 graphics cores and a specified maximum frequency of 2.7 GHz. That makes it suitable for a laptop that relies on the processor’s integrated graphics, including systems with no discrete GPU. It also gives the laptop a graphics fallback when a discrete GPU is disabled to save power.

Integrated graphics use system memory rather than dedicated video memory. Actual gaming results therefore depend on whether the laptop uses two memory channels, the memory speed selected by the manufacturer, cooling and the game’s settings. The 780M’s presence is the important first distinction; it does not guarantee a particular frame rate.

Core 5 205H has its integrated graphics disabled

The Core 5 205H specification reviewed here lists integrated graphics as disabled. A normal laptop using this processor therefore needs a discrete GPU to drive its internal panel and external displays. This design can be entirely sensible in a gaming or creator laptop, where a separate graphics processor is already present, but it removes the low-cost and low-power option of an integrated-graphics-only system.

Check the complete laptop specification rather than assuming that a product photo or CPU name tells you the graphics configuration. Look for the exact discrete GPU model, its configured power limit and the display connections it drives. A Core 5 205H laptop advertised without a discrete graphics solution deserves particular scrutiny because the processor itself does not provide active graphics.

Which processor is faster for CPU work?

Multicore workloads favor AMD on paper

Both processors are eight-core parts, but they organize those cores differently. Intel combines four performance cores with four efficiency cores and exposes 12 threads. AMD uses eight Zen 4 cores with 16 threads. That gives the Ryzen 7 8845HS four additional hardware threads for workloads that can use them, such as compiling code, rendering, running virtual machines, batch photo processing and heavy multitasking.

More threads do not automatically produce a fixed speed advantage. A laptop’s sustained power limit, cooling system, firmware and application scheduler determine how long the processor can maintain high clocks. A thin machine may reduce power quickly, while a larger machine can sustain higher package power. Compare reviews of the exact laptop if long renders or compilations are central to your work.

Single-core results are too close to call from clock speed alone

The Core 5 205H can boost to 4.8 GHz, while the Ryzen 7 8845HS is specified for up to 5.1 GHz. Those headline peaks are close and are not a reliable substitute for a benchmark. The processor may reach the maximum only briefly, and different workloads use different cores, instruction paths and cache behavior. Cooling and firmware can matter more than the 300 MHz difference.

For web browsing, office applications, programming editors and ordinary desktop tasks, both should be considered capable 45 W-class laptop CPUs. Choose based on the complete machine unless your workload is consistently threaded and you have verified sustained performance for the model you intend to buy.

Gaming: with and without a discrete GPU

Gaming on integrated graphics

If the laptop has no discrete GPU, choose the Ryzen 7 8845HS. Its Radeon 780M is the specified graphics engine; the Core 5 205H cannot provide an equivalent integrated-graphics configuration because its iGPU is disabled.

For an integrated-graphics gaming laptop, verify four details before purchase:

  • Memory channels: two populated memory channels can provide more bandwidth than a single module, but the manufacturer may solder memory or restrict upgrades.
  • Memory type and speed: the AMD platform can use DDR5-5600 or LPDDR5X-7500, depending on the design. The faster specification may be available only in a soldered configuration.
  • Cooling: sustained gaming loads can reduce clocks in a thin chassis if heat cannot be removed.
  • Display resolution: a high-resolution panel increases the graphics workload. A laptop’s screen choice can affect playability as much as the CPU.

Do not treat the Radeon 780M as equivalent to a discrete gaming GPU. It is the reason the AMD system can run without one, not a guarantee that every modern game will run at high settings.

Gaming with a discrete GPU

When both candidate laptops include a capable discrete GPU, the processor choice becomes less decisive. At lower resolutions or very high refresh rates, CPU limits can matter; at higher resolutions and quality settings, the discrete GPU commonly carries more of the load. The exact result still depends on the graphics chip, its wattage, cooling, memory configuration and whether the laptop routes the display directly through the GPU.

The Core 5 205H can be a rational choice in this category if it reduces the total price or allows a stronger discrete GPU, better cooling or a better screen. Compare the GPU model and configured wattage first, then examine CPU and system reviews for sustained performance.

AI hardware and software support

AMD documents up to 16 NPU TOPS for the Ryzen 7 8845HS and up to 38 TOPS for the complete platform. The NPU is a dedicated block intended for supported AI workloads, while the total figure combines different processing resources. These figures are capability ratings, not a promise that every application will use the NPU or deliver a particular speed.

The reviewed Core 5 205H specification does not document a comparable dedicated NPU. That is a limitation of the available specification, not proof that every software feature on every Intel laptop is unavailable. Check the exact laptop’s platform documentation and the requirements of the AI application you plan to use.

If local AI processing is a buying priority, confirm all of the following:

Rank #3
Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 5 16" WUXGA Notebook AMD Ryzen 7 8845HS 16GB LPDDR5X 512GB SSD Cloud Grey
  • Processor Manufacturer: AMD
  • Processor Type: Ryzen 7
  • Processor Generation: 8th Gen
  • Processor Model: Ryzen 7 8845HS
  • Processor Core: Octa-core (8 Core)
  • Whether the operating system and application support the AMD NPU or the laptop’s alternative acceleration path.
  • Whether the feature requires a particular driver, application version or manufacturer utility.
  • Whether the advertised TOPS figure refers to the NPU alone or the combined platform.
  • Whether the laptop has enough RAM and cooling for the intended workload.

Power, heat and battery life

Both processors belong to the 45 W class, but that label does not define a laptop’s real-world behavior. AMD specifies a configurable range of 35 W to 54 W for the Ryzen 7 8845HS. Notebookcheck reports package power of up to 115 W for the Core 5 205H, alongside its 45 W nominal rating. A manufacturer may use short boost periods, a lower sustained limit, or a different thermal policy.

Two laptops with the same CPU can therefore have different performance, fan noise and battery life. A thicker chassis with larger heat pipes may sustain higher clocks than a thin model. A discrete GPU also changes the power budget substantially, especially during gaming.

For battery-focused use, examine the entire design:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Battery capacity in watt-hours, not only the advertised runtime.
  • Screen size, resolution, refresh rate and brightness.
  • Whether the laptop can disable the discrete GPU on battery.
  • Memory type, since soldered LPDDR5X may be efficient but cannot be replaced.
  • Reviews that measure web and video runtimes on the exact configuration.

Processor TDP or nominal power alone cannot establish which laptop will last longer.

Memory and platform considerations

AMD offers the broader stated memory range

The Ryzen 7 8845HS platform is specified for DDR5-5600 or LPDDR5X-7500 and PCIe 4.0. A laptop using DDR5 may offer replaceable modules, while LPDDR5X is typically soldered. Confirm the implementation before assuming that a quoted memory speed means upgradeability.

Intel’s listed DDR5-5200 support is only one part of the design

Notebookcheck reports DDR5-5200 support for the Core 5 205H. The practical question is how much memory the laptop includes, whether it runs in a dual-channel configuration, and whether the modules can be replaced. A machine with more RAM or a better upgrade path can be preferable even if its processor specification looks less attractive.

Storage also affects everyday responsiveness. Compare the installed SSD capacity, whether it uses PCIe 4.0 where applicable, and whether a second drive can be added. These are laptop-level decisions rather than guaranteed consequences of choosing one CPU.

How to choose between the two laptops

  1. Decide whether you need a discrete GPU. If the answer is no, select a Ryzen 7 8845HS laptop because the Core 5 205H’s integrated graphics are disabled. If the answer is yes, continue comparing the complete systems.
  2. Match the processor to your workload. Frequent threaded work benefits from the Ryzen’s 16 threads on paper. General office and browser use should not be decided by boost-clock numbers alone.
  3. Check the exact graphics model and power limit. In a Core 5 205H machine, the discrete GPU is mandatory for graphics output. In either machine, the GPU’s model and wattage can dominate game performance.
  4. Inspect memory configuration. Confirm total capacity, channel configuration, speed, soldered versus socketed memory and the maximum supported capacity.
  5. Compare cooling and sustained power. Look for independent testing of the exact chassis, especially if you compile, render or play for long sessions.
  6. Evaluate the screen and battery. A better panel, larger battery or quieter cooling system may be worth more than a small CPU advantage.
  7. Check AI requirements only if they matter to you. The Ryzen has the documented NPU advantage, but application support still determines whether you benefit.
  8. Compare warranty and total price. A cheaper Core 5 205H laptop is worthwhile only when its graphics, display, battery, RAM, storage, cooling and warranty remain acceptable.

Who should buy the Ryzen 7 8845HS?

  • Anyone wanting a laptop that can work without a discrete GPU.
  • Gamers who intend to use integrated graphics.
  • Users running parallel workloads such as compiling, rendering, compression or multiple virtual machines.
  • Light content creators who value the extra threads and integrated graphics fallback.

Common buying mistakes

Comparing clock speeds as if they were benchmark scores

A 5.1 GHz maximum boost for AMD versus 4.8 GHz for Intel does not establish a universal performance lead. Boost behavior is temporary and workload-dependent. Use exact-laptop testing for a performance-critical purchase.

Assuming eight cores means the same thing

Intel’s eight cores consist of four performance and four efficiency cores with 12 threads. AMD’s eight Zen 4 cores provide 16 threads. Core count without core type and thread count is incomplete information.

Ignoring the disabled Intel iGPU

This is the most consequential specification difference. A Core 5 205H laptop needs a discrete graphics solution, so it cannot be evaluated as a direct substitute for an integrated-graphics Ryzen laptop.

Using the CPU’s power rating to predict battery life

Display, battery size, GPU behavior, firmware and chassis design all affect runtime. The 45 W class describes a processor category, not a guaranteed battery result.

Assuming NPU TOPS equals application performance

TOPS figures describe theoretical throughput under specified conditions. Software support, model size, memory and drivers determine whether an application actually uses the NPU.

Evidence limits and what to verify before purchase

The specification comparison is supported by AMD’s 2023 product figures and Notebookcheck’s 2026 listing. The available material does not include a controlled benchmark using the Core 5 205H and Ryzen 7 8845HS in otherwise identical laptops, so no precise percentage advantage should be assigned to either CPU.

Before ordering, verify the manufacturer’s page for the exact model number and check:

Final recommendation

Choose the Ryzen 7 8845HS when you want the more flexible platform: it works with integrated graphics, offers 16 CPU threads, supports Radeon 780M graphics and has a documented NPU. Choose the Core 5 205H when the laptop’s discrete GPU and overall configuration are clearly better value. In either case, judge the complete laptop’s graphics, cooling, memory, display, battery and warranty before deciding.
