Intel announced on May 22, 2023, that production-qualified Agilex 7 FPGAs with the R-Tile chiplet were shipping in volume. R-Tile adds hardened PCIe 5.0 and Compute Express Link (CXL) interface IP, giving system designers a processor-facing path for high-bandwidth data-center and high-performance-computing designs.
What Intel launched on May 22, 2023
The announcement covered volume shipment of production-qualified Agilex 7 devices that include R-Tile. It was not the first unveiling of the Agilex 7 family; the specific milestone was production qualification and volume availability of the R-Tile-equipped parts.

Intel positioned the devices as the first FPGAs with PCIe 5.0 and CXL capabilities and as the only FPGAs, at the time of the announcement, with hardened IP for those interfaces. Those are Intel’s comparative claims, not results from an independent benchmark.

PCIe 5.0 for processor-facing expansion
Altera’s current Agilex 7 I-Series product page specifies PCIe 5.0 x16 operation at up to 32 GT/s. The 32 GT/s figure is the PCIe signaling rate; it is not a guaranteed application payload throughput. Actual usable bandwidth depends on encoding overhead, transaction sizes, software, protocol settings and the rest of the platform.

CXL for coherent accelerator and memory connections
The same product-family description presents CXL as a cache- and memory-coherent interface between CPUs and accelerators. CXL can therefore support architectures in which FPGA logic works more closely with host processor memory and devices than a conventional, non-coherent peripheral link allows.
Do not treat every Agilex 7 revision as having identical CXL behavior. Confirm the exact device, CXL generation and feature set, IP release, license and software support. Intel later described R-Tile devices as shipping CXL IP with CXL 2.0 features in volume, while family-level pages can cover multiple implementation and software combinations.
Why designers may care
- Higher-speed host links: PCIe 5.0 provides a newer, wider processor-to-FPGA connection for accelerator, networking and storage architectures.
- Coherent system designs: CXL is intended for cache- and memory-coherent CPU/accelerator arrangements.
- Hardened interface IP: The PCIe and CXL functions are implemented as hardened device resources rather than being built solely from programmable fabric.
- Target workloads: Intel names data-center and high-performance-computing applications, including software acceleration and data analytics. These targets do not guarantee a particular performance gain in an individual design.
Intel corporate vice president Shannon Poulin said customers were using R-Tile with PCIe Gen 5 and CXL to accelerate software and data analytics, “cutting the processing time from hours to minutes.” That is a vendor statement about cited customer work, not a general benchmark for every Agilex 7 implementation.

What the published numbers mean
| Figure | What it describes | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| 32 GT/s | PCIe 5.0 link signaling rate on an x16 interface | Interface maximum stated for the I-Series; not application throughput |
| x16 | PCIe interface width | Sixteen lanes when the specific device and board expose the full interface |
| 116 Gbps | Highest transceiver data rate listed for the Agilex 7 I-Series family | Transceiver capability, not PCIe link bandwidth |
| “2-times faster” and “4-times higher” | Intel’s launch-release comparisons for PCIe 5.0 bandwidth and CXL bandwidth per port | Company comparisons; the supplied sources do not provide an independent test methodology or competitor configuration |
Agilex 7 I-Series Development Kit
There is a physical prototyping route: the Agilex 7 FPGA I-Series Development Kit is listed for PCIe, CXL and transceiver development. The kit FPGA has three R-Tiles and the documented board configuration exposes two PCIe/CXL 5.0 x16 interfaces.
How the two interfaces are routed
- One PCIe/CXL 5.0 x16 interface routes to the board’s PCIe edge connector.
- A second PCIe/CXL 5.0 x16 interface can route through MCIO connectors.
- The third R-Tile is present on the FPGA but is not counted as a third exposed x16 interface in the kit configuration described by the user guide.
That topology matters when selecting a board. A device datasheet can list interface capability while a particular development board exposes only selected lanes, connectors or modes.
Checks before designing or buying
- Identify the exact part number. Confirm the Agilex 7 I-Series device, package and available R-Tile resources.
- Define the link role. Verify whether your design needs an endpoint, root port or another PCIe arrangement, and whether the chosen device and board support it.
- Confirm CXL scope. Check the supported CXL generation and features for the exact IP release, Quartus version, license and device revision.
- Map board routing. Check connector type, lane mapping, reference-clock arrangement and whether the desired interface reaches the edge connector or MCIO connection.
- Validate host compatibility. Confirm the processor, firmware, operating system, drivers and platform topology can train and use the intended PCIe or CXL link.
- Budget for verification. Link rate is not end-to-end application performance; measure payload throughput, latency, coherency behavior and software overhead in your workload.
What the launch does—and does not—prove
The May 2023 announcement establishes volume shipment of production-qualified R-Tile devices and Intel’s hardened PCIe 5.0/CXL positioning. It does not establish a universal performance result. The reviewed material contains no independent test report for the launch claims, and figures from separate Linux or HPCG projects should not be presented as direct Agilex 7 device benchmarks without their original methods and configurations.

- Max Speeds up to 5.8 Gbps across the 2.4GHz, 5GHz, and 6GHz bands with Ultra-low Latency. Ideal for gaming.
- Max speeds require compatible Wi-Fi 7 router and other factors such as: distance, equipment, and configuration.
- Requires Windows 11 (64-bit), PC must have available M.2 PCIe slot with Key E, does not support AMD based systems.
- Note: Country of Origin is either China or Vietnam. Markings on the product (either B12-12 or A15-15) provide batch information and do not affect functionality.
For a current implementation, use the latest device documentation, Quartus and CXL-IP release notes, and the current development-kit guide. Licensing, supported software versions and sales terms can change, so verify them before committing to a prototype or production design.

The Bottom Line
Agilex 7 R-Tile’s significance is the combination of hardened PCIe 5.0 and CXL interfaces in a production-shipping FPGA. The I-Series kit makes experimentation practical with two documented PCIe/CXL 5.0 x16 paths, but exact CXL features, routing and achievable throughput still depend on the device, IP, software and host platform you choose.
