Integration testing describes a test level; functional testing describes a test type. Integration tests focus on interactions across component or system boundaries, while functional tests check whether specified behavior is performed. They are not competing alternatives: one test can be both functional and integration-level.
What is the difference between integration and functional testing?
| Aspect | Integration testing | Functional testing |
|---|---|---|
| What the label describes | A test level and its scope | A test type and its objective |
| Main focus | Interfaces and interactions between integrated components or systems | Whether specified functions are performed as required |
| Typical test basis | Interface contracts, architecture, and interaction requirements | Functional requirements, use cases, and behavior specifications |
| Question it answers | Do connected parts exchange the expected data and handle responses correctly? | Does the component or system perform the required behavior correctly? |
ISTQB distinguishes test levels, which organize testing by development stage, test object, and objectives, from test types, which group activities by objective or quality characteristic. Its Foundation Level Syllabus v4.0.1 says: “Functional testing evaluates the functions that a component or system should perform.” ISTQB Foundation Level Syllabus v4.0.1 explains that functional testing includes checking functional completeness, correctness, and appropriateness. The ASTQB overview of test levels and types also describes how these classifications differ.
What counts as integration testing?
Integration testing examines interfaces and interactions between parts that have been brought together. The relevant boundary determines the level:
- Component integration testing focuses on interfaces and interactions between components.
- System integration testing focuses on interfaces between the system under test and other systems, such as external services.
ISTQB Foundation Level Syllabus v4.0.1 identifies five levels: component testing, component integration testing, system testing, system integration testing, and acceptance testing. The syllabus details the distinction between component-to-component and system-to-system interfaces. Integration tests commonly take interface contracts and interaction requirements as their basis.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What counts as functional testing?
Functional testing checks what a component or system is supposed to do. Its test basis may be functional requirements, use cases, or another behavior specification. A functional test asks whether the observed behavior matches what is specified, rather than focusing primarily on whether two parts communicate.
The ISTQB Glossary defines functional testing as testing to evaluate whether a component or system satisfies functional requirements: ISTQB Glossary: Functional testing. Functional testing is an objective that can be applied at different test levels. As ISTQB puts it, “Test types are groups of test activities related to specific quality characteristics and most of those test activities can be performed at every test level.” ISTQB Foundation Level Syllabus v4.0.1.

Can a test be both functional and integration testing?
Yes. The labels describe different dimensions. “Integration” identifies the boundary and test level; “functional” identifies the behavior being checked. A test that crosses an integration boundary and verifies a required outcome can belong to both categories.
Checkout and payment example
Suppose an online checkout service sends a payment request to an external provider. An integration test could verify that the request and response use the expected data and that error responses are handled across the boundary. A functional test could verify that an order is accepted after successful payment and handled as specified after payment fails. A single test can exercise that provider boundary and check the specified checkout behavior, making it both a system integration test and a functional test.

This example applies ISTQB’s distinction; it is not a report about a particular product. ISO/IEC/IEEE 29119-1:2022 also lists integration testing among common test levels: ISO/IEC/IEEE 29119-1:2022.
How to describe the scope clearly in a test plan
- Name the test object and boundary: for example, “checkout service to payment provider.”
- State the basis: identify the interface contract, interaction requirement, or functional requirement being tested.
- Specify the expected result: describe both the exchange across the boundary and the behavior the user or calling system should observe.
- Use both labels when they apply: “functional system integration test for successful payment authorization” is more precise than “integration test” alone.
This wording makes clear whether a test is checking communication, required behavior, or both—and what evidence would count as a pass.
