Buy the Instax SQUARE 2 if you want Warm and Cool mood filters, dedicated close-up, standard and landscape focus ranges, and a newer body. Buy the Instax SQUARE SQ1 if you want the lighter camera and the simplest possible selfie workflow.
The cameras use the same Instax SQUARE film and expose the same 62 × 62 mm picture area. That means this is not a choice between two different image formats. It is primarily a choice between creative control and simplicity, body size and weight, and two different battery formats.

The SQUARE 2 is the more configurable camera. The SQ1 is the more stripped-back camera. Neither has an image-size advantage over the other because both expose the same square frame.

The same film and image size
Both cameras use separately sold Instax SQUARE film. Each frame has a 62 × 62 mm image area, so film bought for one camera is compatible with the other. A standard cartridge contains 10 prints, and Fujifilm also lists a 40-exposure multipack.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
This shared format matters more than a small difference in camera price if you plan to shoot regularly. Every photograph consumes a physical print, so your long-term budget includes cartridges as well as batteries and the camera body.
Automatic exposure and ejection
Both models use automatic exposure and list a programmed shutter range of 1/2 to 1/400 second. After you press the shutter, the camera ejects the print automatically. Fujifilm lists development at approximately 90 seconds for both models.
The identical exposure and development specifications mean you should not buy the SQUARE 2 expecting a fundamentally faster or more manually controlled exposure system. Its advantage is how you select the look and focus range before taking the picture.

The cited Fujifilm product specifications do not list a digital screen or wireless printing feature for either camera. You frame through the optical viewfinder, press the shutter and accept the result as an instant print. That makes subject distance, lighting and composition more important than they would be on a phone or digital camera.
Why choose the Instax SQUARE 2?
Warm and Cool filters are a physical control
The SQUARE 2’s defining feature is a switch that places a Warm or Cool filter over the lens, with an Off position for the unfiltered look. Fujifilm describes it as a way to “place a warm or cool filter over the lens and match your mood.”
Warm can suit portraits, indoor scenes and sunset-like color, while Cool can provide a visibly different mood for daylight or blue-toned subjects. These are not software presets that you preview on a screen; you select the filter before exposure and see the result after the film develops. If you rarely want stylized color, the switch can remain Off and the camera still functions as a conventional automatic instant camera.
Three explicit focus ranges
The SQUARE 2 provides three focus settings:
- Close-up: 0.3–0.5 m.
- Standard: 0.5–3.0 m.
- Landscape: 3.0 m and beyond.
These ranges give you a clear way to match the camera to the subject. Use Close-up for a nearby face or object, Standard for most people and everyday scenes, and Landscape when the important subject is farther away. You still need to estimate distance; the camera does not turn into a through-the-lens autofocus system.

A better fit for deliberate shooting
The combination of filter and focus switches makes the SQUARE 2 better suited to someone who wants a small creative decision before every frame. It is useful for portraits where color mood matters, close-up details that need a deliberate distance setting, and outdoor scenes where the Landscape range is more appropriate.
The trade-off is a larger, heavier camera and more controls to remember. Those controls are simple, but a beginner who wants to point, shoot and let the camera handle every choice may prefer the SQ1.
Why choose the Instax SQUARE SQ1?
Its operation is intentionally simple
The SQ1 uses automatic exposure and does not provide an equivalent Warm/Cool filter control. Fujifilm’s operating description is direct: “Twist the lens to turn it on. Twist it again for Selfie mode.” There is no separate focus-range selector to set before an ordinary shot.
That simplicity reduces the number of decisions between seeing a subject and taking a picture. It is especially helpful when several people are sharing the camera, when children are using it, or when you want an uncomplicated first instant camera.
Selfie mode doubles as close-up mode
Twisting the lens to Selfie mode activates the camera’s close-up workflow. The SQ1 includes a built-in selfie mirror, so you can check your framing before pressing the shutter. Fujifilm does not present this as a separate macro lens; it is a mode intended for selfies and nearby subjects.
The SQ1 therefore has a clear two-mode mental model: ordinary shooting and Selfie mode. If you mostly photograph people at normal distances and occasionally take selfies, that may be all the control you need.
It is the smaller and lighter option
The SQ1 weighs 390 g without batteries, strap and film. The SQUARE 2 weighs 450 g without those items, making the SQ1 60 g lighter before you add a cartridge and batteries. The SQ1 is also shallower in the official dimensions.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)

That difference is noticeable when the camera hangs from a strap or goes into a small bag. The SQUARE 2 is not unusually heavy for an instant camera, but the SQ1 is the easier one to carry for a full day.
Size and handling: how much does 60 g matter?
| Handling consideration | SQUARE 2 | SQ1 |
|---|---|---|
| Official size | 139.0 × 119.5 × 71.0 mm | 130.7 × 118.6 × 57.5 mm |
| Official weight basis | 450 g without batteries, film and strap | 390 g without batteries, strap and film |
| Likely advantage | More physical controls and a newer body | Easier to carry and less demanding for casual users |
The cameras are both square-format instant cameras with a broad front profile, so neither is a pocket camera in the phone sense. The SQ1’s reduced depth is the more practical advantage for a small bag; the SQUARE 2’s extra bulk accommodates its filter and focus controls.
When comparing bags or cases, check the exact model rather than assuming one case fits both. The dimensions are different, and a case designed around the shallower SQ1 may not leave room for the SQUARE 2.
Battery choice and shooting endurance
SQUARE 2: four AA alkaline batteries
The SQUARE 2 takes four AA alkaline batteries. Fujifilm rates a new set at about 30 ten-exposure packs, but the figure depends on use. That is an approximate ceiling of 300 exposures under the stated rating, not a guarantee for every temperature, shooting pattern or battery brand.
AA batteries are a familiar format and are often easy to replace when traveling. Carry a complete spare set rather than mixing old and new cells, and follow the polarity markings inside the battery compartment.
Recommended Free Tools
SQ1: two CR2 lithium batteries
The SQ1 uses two CR2 lithium batteries. Fujifilm rates them at about 30 ten-exposure packs under its test conditions. The different chemistry and size mean you cannot substitute AA batteries for CR2 cells.
Before a trip, check that your destination’s camera, electronics or general retailers stock CR2 batteries, or pack a spare pair. Battery availability varies by market, so the smaller camera is not automatically the easier camera to power everywhere.

What the ratings mean for ownership
Both cameras have a similar official film-pack endurance figure, but the battery formats create different purchasing routines. The SQUARE 2 needs more cells at a time; the SQ1 needs fewer, specialized cells. In either case, remove exhausted batteries promptly and store the camera without a film cartridge if you will not use it for an extended period, following Fujifilm’s handling guidance.
Film is the recurring cost that matters most
Film is not included in the camera specifications as a permanent supply: both models require separately sold Instax SQUARE cartridges. Each 10-print cartridge gives you only 10 exposures, so a 40-exposure multipack represents four cartridges rather than an unlimited roll.
When comparing a camera at different retailers, calculate the cost of the number of prints you expect to make over a year. A lower body price can be outweighed by the cost of repeatedly buying film, while a modest difference in battery price is usually less significant than the number of cartridges you consume.
Do not buy Instax Mini or Instax Wide film for either model. The SQUARE 2 and SQ1 require the square cartridge format, and the different Instax formats are not interchangeable.
Image results: the real creative difference
Framing is the same format, not the same experience
Because both cameras expose a 62 × 62 mm image, neither gives you a larger picture or a different aspect ratio. The practical difference comes from how you frame and prepare the shot. The SQUARE 2 asks you to choose a focus range; the SQ1 relies on ordinary automatic operation or Selfie mode.
Color mood versus neutral simplicity
The SQUARE 2 can deliberately alter the mood with Warm or Cool. The SQ1 has no listed equivalent filter control, so its appeal is consistency and fewer settings. Choose the SQUARE 2 if changing the look is part of the fun; choose the SQ1 if you want to avoid accidentally leaving a filter engaged for the next frame.

There is no documented screen or wireless printing feature to confirm focus, exposure or framing after the fact. The selfie mirrors help with front-facing composition, but they do not show the final square frame electronically. Leave enough margin around important faces and remember that instant film is a one-shot medium.

Step-by-step: using the SQUARE 2
- Install a fresh film cartridge. Use Instax SQUARE film and confirm that the cartridge matches the camera format.
- Install four AA alkaline batteries. Match the polarity marks and use a complete, fresh set.
- Choose the focus range. Select Close-up for 0.3–0.5 m, Standard for 0.5–3.0 m, or Landscape for 3.0 m and beyond.
- Select the color mood. Set the physical switch to Warm, Cool or Off.
- Compose through the viewfinder. Keep the subject within the selected distance range and allow extra framing margin.
- Press the shutter once. The camera handles exposure and ejects the print automatically.
- Allow approximately 90 seconds for development. Treat the emerging print carefully while it develops.
The important habit is to check both switches before each shot. The SQUARE 2’s creative flexibility is useful only when the selected focus range and filter match the subject.
Step-by-step: using the SQ1
- Install a fresh film cartridge. Use Instax SQUARE film, which produces the shared 62 × 62 mm image.
- Install two CR2 lithium batteries. Check polarity and carry a spare pair for longer outings.
- Turn the lens to start the camera. The normal position is for ordinary shooting.
- For a selfie or close-up, twist the lens again to Selfie mode. Use the built-in mirror to check your position.
- Compose and press the shutter. Exposure and ejection are automatic.
- Allow approximately 90 seconds for development.
The SQ1 has fewer settings to verify, which is its main operational advantage. The key mistake to avoid is taking a close-up without engaging Selfie mode.
Which camera is better for specific buyers?
Choose the SQUARE 2 for creative control
- You want Warm and Cool color moods directly on the camera.
- You are comfortable selecting Close-up, Standard or Landscape distance ranges.
- You photograph a mix of nearby details, people and distant scenes.
- You prefer a newer body and do not mind carrying the larger camera.
Choose the SQ1 for a first instant camera
- You want the fewest controls and an obvious on/off and selfie workflow.
- You value the 60 g lower weight and shallower body.
- You mainly photograph people, parties and casual snapshots.
- You would rather avoid choosing filters or distance ranges before each frame.
Choose based on battery logistics
Pick the SQUARE 2 if four AA batteries are easier for you to find and carry. Pick the SQ1 if you already keep CR2 lithium batteries available and prefer carrying only two cells. This decision is local: check stock where you live and where you expect to travel rather than assuming one format is universally easier.

Choose based on the total film plan
If you expect to shoot often, compare the ongoing price of Instax SQUARE cartridges in your region before choosing a body. Both cameras consume the same film, so this calculation does not favor one model over the other. It can, however, change whether either camera fits your annual photography budget.
Price and value in 2026
Digital Camera World reported expected SQUARE 2 retail pricing of $119.95, £89.99 and CA$139.99 on October 14, 2026. Those are regional expected prices from that report, not a universal price or a guarantee that every retailer will list the camera at those figures.
No current US MSRP for the SQ1 was established on the official pages checked. Verify the actual local price, warranty terms and included accessories before ordering. A discounted SQ1 can be excellent value if you want simple operation, while a small price gap may make the SQUARE 2 worthwhile for buyers who will genuinely use its filters and focus ranges.
Do not judge value from the camera body alone. Add at least one film cartridge, replacement batteries and a protective case if you plan to carry the camera regularly.
Buying checklist
- Confirm that the listing is for the square format, not Instax Mini or Instax Wide.
- Check whether film is included; both cameras normally require separately sold cartridges.
- Verify the battery type: four AA alkaline cells for SQUARE 2 or two CR2 lithium cells for SQ1.
- Check the seller’s stated warranty and return policy, especially for imported regional stock.
- Confirm that the case and accessories are made for the exact model.
- For the SQUARE 2, make sure the description includes the Warm/Cool filter control and three focus ranges.
- For the SQ1, confirm that the built-in selfie mirror and Selfie mode are present.
- Compare the body price with the local cost of 10-print and 40-exposure Instax SQUARE film packs.
Final recommendation
For most beginners who want a light, uncomplicated camera, the Instax SQUARE SQ1 is the safer choice: it uses the same film and image size as the SQUARE 2, has automatic exposure, and makes selfies and close-ups straightforward through its Selfie mode.
The Instax SQUARE 2 is the better buy when its extra controls are the reason you are shopping. Its Warm/Cool switch, three defined focus ranges and newer body give you more creative control, while the automatic exposure, ejection and development process remain familiar. Choose it deliberately for those features, not because it produces a larger square print.
