The Instax SQUARE 2 uses only FUJIFILM instax SQUARE Instant Film. Instax mini and instax WIDE cartridges are different formats and will not fit or work in this camera. A SQUARE print measures 86 × 72 mm overall, with a 62 × 62 mm image area. After each exposure, the print ejects automatically and normally develops in about 90 seconds, although temperature affects the timing.
What film does the Instax SQUARE 2 use?
The correct consumable is Fujifilm instax SQUARE instant film. Buy film identified specifically as “instax SQUARE”; the word “Square” refers to the cartridge and print format, not merely to the shape of the image you want.

Instax mini and instax WIDE film are not interchangeable with SQUARE film. Each format uses a different cartridge size and frame geometry, so a mini or WIDE pack cannot be substituted in the SQUARE 2. Do not force another cartridge into the film compartment: it can prevent the door from closing correctly and risks damaging the camera or film.

Format compatibility at a glance
| Film format | Works in Instax SQUARE 2? | Print dimensions | Image area | Development |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| instax SQUARE | Yes; this is the specified format | 86 × 72 mm | 62 × 62 mm | Approximately 90 seconds, temperature dependent |
| instax mini | No; different cartridge and format | Not stated in the cited SQUARE 2 specifications | Not stated in the cited SQUARE 2 specifications | Not applicable to the SQUARE 2 |
| instax WIDE | No; different cartridge and format | Not stated in the cited SQUARE 2 specifications | Not stated in the cited SQUARE 2 specifications | Not applicable to the SQUARE 2 |
The 86 × 72 mm measurement is the complete sheet, including the border. The photograph itself occupies a 62 × 62 mm square in the center, which is why the finished print is not a perfect 72 × 72 mm square.

How an Instax SQUARE photo develops
Instax film uses silver-halide chemistry. Each sheet contains a developer-fluid pod along one edge. When the camera ejects the exposed sheet, the rollers press and spread that fluid across the image area. The silver-halide image then develops progressively until the print stabilizes.
Under normal conditions, the SQUARE 2 specification gives an approximate development time of 90 seconds. That is a guide, not a stopwatch guarantee: ambient temperature changes how quickly the chemistry reacts. A cool environment can make the image appear more slowly, while warmer conditions can alter the timing and handling window.
What to do immediately after the print ejects
- Catch the print by its edges and place it on a flat surface with the image side protected from strong light.
- Leave it still for roughly 90 seconds. Do not crease, bend, or shake it; Fujifilm specifically warns that movement during development can damage the emerging image.
- Wait until the image has finished appearing before judging exposure or color. A partially developed frame can look faint or uneven even when it will finish normally.
- Keep the print away from heat, moisture, and direct sunlight while it develops.
Shaking does not speed up the chemistry. It can disturb the developer as it spreads and may produce streaks or uneven areas, so the safest technique is simply to leave the sheet undisturbed.

Instant film is light-sensitive until it has been exposed in the camera. Keep a cartridge sealed in its foil packaging until you are ready to load it, and avoid opening the film door in bright conditions.
- Confirm that the package says instax SQUARE, not mini or WIDE, and check the package expiration date.
- Open the camera’s film compartment and insert the cartridge in the orientation shown by the cartridge and the camera’s loading marks. Do not remove or dismantle the cartridge.
- Close the film door completely before taking a picture. The protective dark sheet is designed to eject first when a new pack is initialized.
- After loading, avoid opening the film door again until the pack is empty.
The critical rule is the last one. Opening the door after loading exposes the remaining sheets to light. Fujifilm says that this exposure can turn those sheets white, so a new pack may be ruined even if only one frame has been used.

Why did my Instax photo come out white or blank?
A completely white result is often caused by light reaching film that was still protected inside the cartridge. The most important question is whether the film door was opened after loading.
| Symptom | Most relevant check | What to do next |
|---|---|---|
| Several remaining sheets are white or blank | The film door may have been opened after the cartridge was loaded | Do not open the door again. Replace the exposed pack with a fresh SQUARE cartridge. |
| The first sheet after loading looks unusual | Check whether the dark protective sheet ejected correctly | Keep the door closed and test with the next exposure. If the issue continues, stop using that pack and inspect the camera according to its manual. |
| The image is still pale while you are watching it | It may not have completed its development time | Leave it flat and still for approximately 90 seconds, allowing for the ambient temperature. |
Do not open the film compartment to inspect how many sheets remain. That action can expose every unused sheet. If a pack was exposed by an accidental door opening, there is no reliable way to restore the affected film; use a new cartridge.
Unused-film storage: temperature, expiration, and travel
Keep unexposed SQUARE film cool and use it before the expiration date printed on the package. Fujifilm’s guidance is deliberately practical rather than a promise of a particular shelf life after expiration: expired or poorly stored film may produce unpredictable color and contrast.
- Protect it from heat. Do not leave cartridges in a parked car, near a heater, or in direct sun.
- Protect it from severe cold. If film has been exposed to extreme heat or cold, let it return to normal room temperature before loading and shooting.
- Keep the package sealed until use. The foil packaging protects the light-sensitive sheets.
- Rotate your stock. Use older packs first, provided they remain within their printed expiration date.
Taking film through an airport
Carry unused instant film in your hand luggage rather than checked baggage. Airport screening equipment can expose film to X-rays, increasing the risk of fogging. Hand luggage is not a guarantee that film will be unaffected, but it reduces exposure to the stronger screening used for checked bags. Keep the cartridges together in their original packaging so they can be identified easily if an officer needs to inspect them.
After a flight or any trip involving substantial temperature changes, allow the film to reach normal room temperature before opening the package or loading the camera. Sudden condensation and temperature shifts are unnecessary additional stress on the film chemistry.

How to store finished Instax SQUARE photos
Once a print has finished developing, store it away from strong light in a cool, dry place. Prolonged bright light can fade or alter the image, while heat and humidity can accelerate unwanted changes.

- Keep prints in a drawer, album, or other shaded location rather than on a sunny display shelf.
- Use a dry environment and avoid places exposed to steam, condensation, or high humidity.
- Handle prints by the edges and let them finish developing before stacking or filing them.
- Do not seal prints in an airtight bag for storage. Fujifilm warns that sealed bags may cause discoloration.
A photo album or archival sleeve that is designed for instant photographs can provide physical protection while still allowing the print to remain in a normal, dry environment. The key distinction is between shielding a print from light and trapping it in a sealed bag: the first is recommended, while the second can contribute to discoloration.
Development problems caused by temperature and handling
Cold surroundings
In a cold room, the image may take longer than the approximately 90-second guideline to become clear. Keep the sheet flat and still rather than trying to warm it rapidly with a heater, hair dryer, or direct sunlight. Artificial heat can damage the chemistry and create uneven results.
Hot surroundings
High temperatures can change the development behavior and the way colors settle. Move the developing print to a cooler, shaded location, but do not refrigerate a freshly ejected sheet. Avoid touching the image surface while the developer is active.
Movement during development
Creasing, bending, or shaking can interfere with the even spread of developer fluid. The safest procedure is to set the print down once and leave it alone until the image has appeared.

How many photos can the batteries support?
FUJIFILM’s current SQUARE 2 specifications estimate approximately 30 ten-exposure SQUARE film packs from a new set of AA batteries. That is a camera battery-capacity estimate, not a guaranteed number of photographs. Flash use, temperature, battery age, and shooting habits can all change the result.
Carry spare AA batteries when you plan to use several packs, particularly in cold weather or on a trip. If the camera stops ejecting film reliably, check battery condition before assuming the cartridge is defective. Keep the film door closed while troubleshooting so you do not expose the remaining sheets.
Buying replacement film: a quick checklist
- Look for the exact wording “Fujifilm instax SQUARE instant film.”
- Confirm that the pack is not labeled instax mini or instax WIDE.
- Check the expiration date before buying multiple packs.
- Inspect packaging for damage or signs of prolonged heat exposure.
- Buy only the number of packs you can store in a cool place and use within their dates.
Color, monochrome, and themed SQUARE products may differ in appearance, but they must still be SQUARE-format cartridges intended for the camera. If the package does not clearly identify the SQUARE format, do not assume compatibility from the word “Instax” alone.
Practical troubleshooting sequence
When a frame looks wrong, use this order of checks so you do not accidentally sacrifice the rest of the pack:
- Leave the print flat and still for the full approximate development period.
- Consider the ambient temperature; development time varies with temperature.
- Ask whether the film door was opened after loading. If it was, treat the remaining film as light-exposed.
- Check that the cartridge is the SQUARE format and was within its expiration date.
- Check battery condition if the camera did not eject the sheet normally.
- If fresh, correctly stored SQUARE film still fails repeatedly, stop opening the film compartment and consult the camera’s official support or manual for service guidance.
This sequence separates problems that can be corrected by waiting or replacing batteries from problems that permanently affect the film itself. Once unused sheets have been exposed by an open door, changing settings cannot recover them.
