Use Mute when one followed account is the problem and you want to stop seeing that account without unfollowing it. Not Interested is recommendation feedback: Meta says it removes the selected post immediately and leads Instagram to suggest fewer posts like it. Mute is an account-level visibility control. It changes what you see from that account, but it is not documented as a way to remove an entire topic from Explore, Reels, or every other recommendation surface.
The short answer
These controls solve different problems, so the better choice depends on what you are trying to stop.

| Your goal | Use | What it targets | What to expect |
|---|---|---|---|
| See fewer posts about a topic or fewer similar recommendations | Not Interested | The selected post and the content pattern it represents | The post is removed immediately, and Instagram says it will suggest fewer posts like it in the future. |
| Stop seeing one followed account without ending the follow | Mute | That account’s content | The account’s posts are hidden from your view while the follow relationship remains. |
| Reduce recommendations containing recurring words or phrases | Hidden Words, where available | Specified terms in recommendation captions or hashtags | Content containing the terms can be hidden; this is broader than handling one post but depends on the words you specify. |
| Browse only accounts you follow | Following feed | The feed view itself | Meta describes this view as chronological and without suggested posts. |
| Pause suggested posts temporarily | Snooze suggested posts | Suggested posts in the feed | Meta documents a 30-day snooze, rather than a permanent switch. |
If the unwanted material comes from many unrelated accounts, start with Not Interested and consider Hidden Words. If it consistently comes from one account you still want to follow, Mute is the narrower and more predictable control.

It is feedback about the content, not a permanent block
Not Interested is attached to an individual recommended post. Meta’s 2022 product announcement describes the immediate result this way: “By tapping Not Interested, it removes the post from your feed immediately, and we’ll suggest fewer posts like it in the future.” That sentence contains two separate effects: the selected item disappears now, and Instagram receives a negative preference signal about similar recommendations.

The wording matters. Meta says fewer, not none. Instagram recommendations are adaptive and probabilistic, so a single tap should not be treated as a topic blacklist. Similar material can still appear when other signals point in that direction, when the post is classified differently, or when the same interest is represented by different accounts and formats.
The scope is recommendation content
Not Interested is most useful for posts you did not ask to see from accounts you do not follow. It tells the recommendation system that the selected content is a poor fit. Repeating the control on genuinely unwanted examples gives Instagram more consistent feedback than using it randomly on unrelated posts.
Because the control is about recommendation relevance, it is the stronger choice of the two controls in this article for reducing a subject across multiple accounts. It does not promise to remove every reference to that subject from Explore, Reels, or other surfaces, and it is not documented as an advertisement-removal setting.

What Mute actually does
It hides one account while preserving the follow
Mute is designed for a relationship-level problem: you want to remain connected to an account but do not want its content in your viewing surfaces. Instagram’s explanation, quoted by Boing Boing in 2021, says: “You can mute an account if you’d like to stop seeing what they share, but are hesitant about unfollowing them.”
That makes Mute useful for a prolific poster, a temporary annoyance, or an account whose updates you no longer want in your feed but whose follow you want to keep. The account is not removed from your followed list by this action.

Mute is not topic-wide recommendation training
Mute changes the visibility of the selected account. It is not documented as a command to remove a whole subject from recommendations, and it does not address similar posts from other accounts. If ten different accounts are producing the same unwanted theme, muting them one at a time is a narrow strategy; Not Interested and, where available, Hidden Words address the recommendation pattern more directly.
The control also should not be described as a guarantee that every trace of the account disappears from every Instagram surface. Its documented purpose is to stop seeing what that account shares while keeping the follow relationship. Menu labels and the available mute choices can vary by app version, account, and region.

How Instagram recommendations respond to feedback
Meta describes recommendations as a way to help people discover communities and content, personalized from the content and actions that indicate what a person may be interested in. That means Not Interested is one signal among several, not a manually maintained block list.
Actions can point in different directions. For example, repeatedly watching, saving, or engaging with material related to a subject can continue to suggest interest even after one Not Interested tap. The same topic may also be packaged under different captions, hashtags, creators, or formats. Consequently, the practical result is a shift in ranking probability rather than an instant, permanent purge.
This model explains why a recommendation can reappear without the control having “failed.” The promised behavior is a reduction in similar suggestions over time, not an absolute exclusion. Mute has a different logic: it is an account visibility decision, so it is the more direct answer when the source is known.

Using Not Interested effectively
Feature placement changes, so look for the current Not Interested label in the post’s options menu. The following sequence describes the action without assuming a particular icon or screen layout.
- Find a recommended post that represents the problem. Use the post in the surface where you are seeing it, such as the main feed, Explore, or Reels.
- Open that post’s options. Choose the control labeled Not Interested. Instagram may present the label or surrounding menu differently in another app version or region.
- Confirm the choice if Instagram asks. The selected post should be removed from the feed immediately, matching Meta’s description.
- Repeat only when the examples are genuinely unwanted. Consistent feedback about the same pattern is more informative than marking unrelated posts simply because they are recommended.
- Use a different control when the problem is a person, not a topic. If one followed account is responsible for the unwanted material, Mute avoids turning every post into recommendation feedback.
Do not interpret one tap as a permanent topic block. Watch whether the mix of recommendations changes, and use Hidden Words or the Following feed when the broader goal requires a different scope.
Muting one account without unfollowing
- Identify the followed account you want to stop seeing. Start from one of its posts or the account’s profile.
- Open the account or post options. Select Mute when that label is available. The exact menu path can differ by app version, account, and region.
- Confirm the mute. The purpose of the setting is to hide what the account shares while leaving you following it.
- Keep topic feedback separate. If posts about the same subject from other accounts continue to appear, use Not Interested on those recommendations rather than muting every source.
Muting is therefore a good fit for a single account and a poor substitute for topic-level recommendation feedback. It also does not establish that advertisements or unrelated recommendation surfaces will disappear.
Which control should you choose in common situations?
You dislike a subject appearing across many accounts
Choose Not Interested on representative recommended posts. Its documented effect is to remove each selected post and lead to fewer similar suggestions. If the subject is repeatedly visible through particular words or hashtags, add those terms to Hidden Words where the feature is available. This combines content-level feedback with a term-based filter instead of trying to identify and mute every account.
You want to keep following a friend, colleague, or creator but stop seeing updates
Choose Mute. It was specifically described as a way to stop seeing an account’s shares while hesitating to unfollow. Because it targets the account rather than a topic, it avoids changing your preference about similar content from everyone else.

You want a feed containing only followed accounts
Use the Following feed when it is available in your account. Meta describes that view as chronological and containing only accounts you follow, with no suggested posts. This changes the feed surface you are browsing; it does not retrain recommendation preferences everywhere else.
You need a temporary break from suggestions
Use Snooze suggested posts. Meta documents a 30-day snooze, which is a timed pause rather than a permanent setting. When that period ends, recommendations can return, so use Not Interested or Hidden Words for longer-term relevance changes.
You want to prioritize selected accounts
Favorites is a separate feed control with a different scope from Not Interested and Mute. Treat it as a way to manage which followed accounts matter most, not as a topic-blocking or account-hiding command.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does muting stop suggested posts?
Not in the broad sense. Mute targets the content of the account you muted. It is not documented as a control that removes suggested posts from other accounts or eliminates a subject from Explore, Reels, or every recommendation surface.
Recommended Free Tools
If a muted account was the only source of a certain post type, you may notice fewer examples simply because that source is hidden. That incidental result is different from teaching Instagram that the topic itself is unwanted. For a topic-level change, use Not Interested and, when appropriate, Hidden Words.

Can you turn off suggested posts completely?
The documented options in this comparison do not provide a permanent, account-wide off switch for all recommendations. The Following feed is the closest described way to browse without suggested posts: Meta says it shows only followed accounts in chronological order. Snooze suggested posts provides a 30-day pause.
These are surface or time controls, not proof that recommendation systems have been disabled everywhere. If you return to a feed or surface that includes recommendations, Instagram can continue to personalize what appears there.
Why recommendations may continue after Not Interested
- “Fewer” is not “never.” Meta’s wording promises a reduction in similar suggestions, not a permanent exclusion.
- Recommendations use multiple signals. Other actions and expressed interests can continue to influence ranking.
- The same subject can be packaged differently. A new creator, caption, hashtag, or format may not look identical to the post you rejected.
- Mute has a narrower scope. Hiding one account does not address other accounts posting the same material.
- Controls can vary by rollout. Menu labels and availability differ by app version, account, and region.
When this happens, apply the control that matches the remaining source of the problem: more representative Not Interested feedback for a topic, Mute for a particular account, Hidden Words for recurring terms, Following for a no-suggestions browsing view, or Snooze for a temporary pause.
Privacy and notification questions
Will someone know you muted them?
The material establishing Mute describes it as a private way to stop seeing an account while remaining followed; it does not describe a notification to the account. Instagram’s quoted explanation focuses on your viewing choice rather than an alert to the other person. Because product behavior and labels can change, check the current in-app wording if notification behavior is critical to your situation.
Does Not Interested unfollow or block anyone?
Not Interested is described as removing the selected post and reducing similar suggestions. It is not presented as an unfollow or block action. Mute likewise preserves the follow relationship by design.
Important limits to keep in mind
- Neither Not Interested nor Mute is documented as removing advertisements.
- Not Interested reduces similar recommendations but does not guarantee a permanent topic ban.
- Mute hides the selected account’s content; it is not a documented, all-surface topic filter.
- Following feed and Snooze suggested posts change how or when you browse recommendations, while Hidden Words targets specified terms.
- Instagram can change menu labels and feature availability by app version, account, and region.
Bottom line for choosing between them
For the question “Which stops Instagram recommendations better?”, the answer is Not Interested. It is the control Meta explicitly describes as removing a post and leading to fewer similar suggestions, so it is the best of these two options for unwanted topics and recommendation patterns.
Choose Mute when the unwanted material comes from one account you still want to follow. It is an account-level hide, not a recommendation-training switch. When neither is broad enough, use the control whose scope matches your goal: Hidden Words for recurring terms, Following for a chronological followed-only view, or a 30-day Snooze for a temporary break.
