Instagram’s feature is called the Friends tab in Reels. It began rolling out during 2025, and Meta announced its broader global launch on August 6, 2025. The tab can include public Reels that relevant connections liked, commented on, reposted or created, along with some recommendations from Blends.
This does not mean every like is automatically broadcast to every follower. Instagram selects activity according to public availability, account relationships, privacy controls, ranking and rollout conditions. Instagram also provides controls to limit how your own Reel likes and comments appear in the Friends tab.

What Instagram’s Friends tab actually shows
The Friends tab is a separate Reels surface designed to add social context to recommendations. Meta says it can display public content that people Instagram treats as friends or relevant connections have:
- Liked
- Commented on
- Reposted
- Created
- Recommended through a Blend you started
Tap Reels to return to the ordinary Reels feed. Instagram describes the feature as a way to discover videos through people you know and start conversations around them, rather than as a complete record of everything your friends have done. Meta’s announcement gives the official description and launch details.

Activity bubbles are related, but not identical
Some accounts also see profile pictures or activity bubbles while watching Reels. These may lead to friend-related content or indicate activity connected with a Reel. During the rollout, the placement and behavior varied. Do not assume that every profile image always means that the named person liked the exact video currently on screen; inspect the surrounding label or tap target.
How to find the Friends tab
- Open Instagram.
- Open the Reels section.
- At the top of the Reels viewer, tap Friends.
- Tap Reels to switch back to the standard feed.
The labels or their position can differ if Instagram is testing a new navigation bar, your app needs an update, or the feature is not enabled for your account.
Does Instagram show your friends every Reel you like?
No. The Friends tab is not a guaranteed, complete broadcast of your likes. A like may be surfaced only when several conditions line up:

- The Reel is public and still available.
- The relevant relationship exists between the accounts. “Friends” does not necessarily mean every follower or everyone in your phone contacts.
- Your activity has not been hidden through an available Friends-tab control.
- The feature is available to both accounts under Instagram’s current rollout and safety rules.
- Instagram’s recommendation system selects the activity as relevant.
A Reel may therefore be absent even when someone interacted with it. It could be private, deleted, restricted, too old for the current ranking window, or simply not selected. Teen-account protections and other safety settings can also change visibility.
What other people can and cannot infer

Consequently, “everyone can see what you like” is inaccurate. The feature can make some interactions more socially visible than users expect, especially around public Reels, but it does not make every like universally visible.
How to hide your Reel likes and comments from the Friends tab
Meta says Instagram is rolling out controls for hiding your own likes and comments on Reels from the Friends tab. Because menu names and availability vary by account, look for a setting named Activity in Friends Tab or a closely related privacy option.

- Open your Instagram profile and enter Settings and activity.
- Use settings search for Activity in Friends Tab, or review privacy settings for Reels and friend activity.
- Choose the option that limits who can see your likes and comments on Reels. If your account offers No one, select it to prevent those interactions from being surfaced in the Friends tab.
- Check the setting again after an app update, because Instagram can rename or relocate controls.
This setting concerns appearance in the Friends tab. It does not necessarily erase the like from Instagram’s systems, remove it from every ordinary like list, or stop Instagram from using engagement internally for ranking.

Hiding your activity and hiding someone else’s prompts are separate controls. Instagram says you can mute activity bubbles from particular people you follow. If the option appears on an activity bubble or in that account’s related menu, choose the mute control for friend activity.
- Hide my activity: limits how your likes and comments are surfaced in Friends.
- Mute activity bubbles: reduces friend-activity prompts you see from a selected account.
- Unfollow, restrict or block: changes the relationship more broadly and has additional effects.
What happens if you unlike a Reel?
Unliking removes the like itself, subject to Instagram’s normal processing. It is not a guaranteed way to undo every prior recommendation, notification or impression someone may already have seen. If the concern is future Friends-tab visibility, the activity-visibility control is the more direct setting; unlike a Reel when you also want the engagement removed.

Are private accounts and private Reels included?
Meta’s announcement describes the Friends experience as centered on public content. A private account’s Reel remains subject to that account’s audience restrictions; the Friends tab is not a universal way to expose private posts or private likes. Interactions with public Reels can be treated differently from interactions with private content, and teen or safety settings may impose additional limits.
Why Instagram added the feature
Instagram’s stated goal is to help people discover content friends enjoy and make it easier to start conversations. A reasonable product analysis is that friend activity supplies additional discovery signals, makes recommendations feel more relevant and encourages replies, shares, direct messages and longer sessions. That explains the design, but it does not mean Instagram publishes a complete activity log.

Early 2025 reports compared friend-liked Reels with Instagram’s former Following activity feed. The comparison is useful for orientation, but the current Friends tab is not necessarily a chronological history of everything followed accounts have liked. It is a curated, Reels-focused discovery surface. Early coverage of the experiment appeared in Business Insider’s syndicated report and Mashable’s syndicated report.

Why you may not see the tab or a particular friend’s Reel
- Your account, country, age setting or app version may not have the same rollout.
- Instagram may be testing, renaming or temporarily disabling the surface.
- The content may not be public or may no longer be available.
- The person may have hidden activity or may not fall within the relevant connection set.
- Instagram’s ranking system may not select the interaction, or the activity may be outside its relevance window.
- You may be viewing the ordinary Reels feed rather than Friends.
User reports have described features appearing and later disappearing, but those reports are anecdotal and do not establish a formal removal. GIGAZINE’s January 2025 summary documents the earlier rollout and the comparison with the former activity feed.
Privacy verdict
Instagram’s Friends tab does not make every like public to every follower, but it does give selected likes, comments, reposts and creations a more prominent social route into other people’s Reels. If that visibility is unwanted, use the Friends-tab activity setting when available, avoid liking sensitive public Reels, and unlike content when you want to remove the engagement itself. Verify the controls on your own account because Instagram’s wording, eligibility and rollout can differ.
