Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →If Instagram shows “You Can’t Follow Accounts Right Now,” it has rejected a follow attempt—but the message alone does not tell you why. Check whether your account is already following 7,500 people, then pause repeated attempts and work through the checks below. A failed follow can stem from a temporary action restriction, an app or network problem, or an issue with one particular profile; no single fix or waiting period is guaranteed.
Why Instagram may reject a follow
The error is a symptom, not a diagnosis. Instagram’s Help Centre sets a total following limit of 7,500 accounts. Attempts to follow beyond that cap return an error, regardless of how many followers your account has. The Help Centre does not state a publication year for this limit. If you are below the cap, other possibilities include a temporary restriction after rapid follow or unfollow activity, a problem with the app or login session, network conditions, or an issue specific to the profile you are trying to follow. Instagram does not publish a universal hourly or daily follow number that is guaranteed safe for every account, nor a universal duration for a temporary restriction. A message such as “Try Again Later” or “Unexpected Error” does not by itself prove that your account has been disabled.
What to do when a follow fails
-
Stop retrying for now
Do not repeatedly tap Follow or rapidly alternate between following and unfollowing. Pause follow activity rather than testing the same rejected action over and over. Instagram does not provide a universal wait time that guarantees the restriction will clear.

Check your Following count
Open your profile and check how many accounts you follow. If the total is 7,500, the cap explains why another follow fails. Unfollow only accounts you no longer want to follow; waiting will not let you exceed the limit. Avoid trying to clear space through a rapid mass-unfollow session.

Review Account Status
Look in Instagram’s Account Status area for restriction notices or an option to request a review. Menu labels and locations can change, so use the app’s settings and help search if you cannot find it. A notice may offer useful context, but the follow error alone is not confirmation of a restriction.

Check whether the problem affects one profile or several
After pausing, make only one or two purposeful checks with profiles you genuinely intend to follow. If the failure appears limited to one profile, do not assume you have a general account restriction. If it happens with every profile, that is a clue that the issue may be broader, not proof of its cause.

Refresh the app and session
Restart Instagram and install an available app update. If appropriate, sign out and back in. You can also use your device’s normal cache-clearing or app-reinstallation options. These steps may address a local app or session problem; they cannot be counted on to remove an account-level restriction.

Compare the app with Instagram.com
Try the same relevant profile once on Instagram.com. If following works in the browser but not the app, that difference points toward an app or session issue. If it fails in both places, the problem may be broader. Neither result proves a specific cause.
-
Check your connection
If useful, switch between your usual Wi-Fi and mobile data and make one careful check. A change in result can help narrow down whether the connection is involved, but it is only a clue.

Why does Instagram let me tap Follow and then immediately unfollow?
An immediate change back to Follow means the follow did not remain in place, but it does not identify the cause. It may be consistent with the same temporary action issue or app, session, or network trouble described above. Avoid tapping repeatedly to force the change; check whether the problem happens with other profiles and compare the app with the browser.
Quick Recap
What not to assume
- It does not automatically mean your account is banned. This error alone cannot distinguish an account restriction from other causes.
- There is no verified universal safe follow rate or recovery timer. Do not rely on a fixed hourly or daily number, or a promise that waiting 24 hours or three days will solve it.
- A paid restriction-removal service is not a supported fix. Use Instagram’s own settings, security controls, and reporting route instead.
