Instagram Reels Resolution, Aspect Ratio, and File Size Explained (2026)

For a standard full-screen Reel, build a 9:16 vertical video. A 1080×1920 canvas is a practical production target, not a universal Instagram maximum. The exact limits depend on how you publish: Meta’s documented API route lists a 1 GB maximum file, 3 seconds to 15 minutes, 23–60 frames per second, MP4 or MOV, H.264 or HEVC video, AAC audio at 48 kHz, 25 Mbps maximum video bitrate and 128 kbps audio bitrate. In-app posting and ads can use different limits, so always match your export to the route you will use.

The recommended Reel export at a glance

Use a vertical project with a 9:16 aspect ratio. For most editors, that means setting the sequence to 1080×1920 pixels. This fills a modern phone screen without requiring an unusually large source file and is a sensible working standard for creators, even though Instagram has not established 1080×1920 as one universal maximum for every upload surface.

The specifications below are the route-specific values documented for Meta’s Instagram publishing API. They are the clearest technical baseline when you export a file deliberately rather than relying on an app’s automatic conversion.

Setting API-documented value What to do in an editor
Aspect ratio Recommended 9:16 Use a vertical 9:16 sequence; avoid adding black side bars.
Resolution Maximum 1920 horizontal pixels in the API documentation 1080×1920 is a practical full-screen working canvas. Do not treat it as a universal platform maximum.
Container MP4 or MOV Choose MP4 unless your workflow specifically requires MOV.
Video codec H.264 or HEVC H.264 is the safest broadly compatible choice; use HEVC only when your publishing chain supports it.
Frame rate 23–60 FPS Keep the export within that range and match the source when possible.
Video bitrate 25 Mbps maximum Set a capped bitrate or a constrained VBR mode so peaks do not exceed the limit.
Audio AAC, 48 kHz, 128 kbps Export a stereo AAC track at 48 kHz and 128 kbps.
Duration 3 seconds minimum; 15 minutes maximum Trim anything outside that range before API publishing.
File size 1 GB maximum Check the final encoded file, not the size of the project or source footage.

Meta’s documentation uses the phrase “maximum 1920 horizontal pixels.” A June 24, 2025 media-guidelines summary describes a 1920-pixel vertical maximum instead. That wording difference is another reason to treat 1080×1920 as a practical target and to verify the limit for the specific upload route.

Why Instagram Reels specifications conflict

There is no single specification sheet that governs every way to publish a Reel. The app, the publishing API and advertising tools can validate different fields, durations and dimensions. A September 23, 2026 comparison from Clapr notes that Instagram does not publish one set of Reels specifications.

Publishing route Values reported by the cited guidance How to interpret them
Instagram app posting Minimum resolution 720 pixels; aspect-ratio range 1.91:1 to 9:16; up to 20 minutes (Clapr, 2026) These are app-help guidance summarized by Clapr, not a promise that every account, device or update exposes identical limits.
Meta/Instagram publishing API Recommended 9:16; maximum 1920 horizontal pixels; 23–60 FPS; 25 Mbps video bitrate; 128 kbps audio; 3 seconds to 15 minutes; 1 GB; MP4 or MOV; H.264 or HEVC; AAC at 48 kHz Use these values when a scheduler or integration sends the file through the documented API route.
Instagram ads Separate advertising specifications Do not assume an organic Reel export automatically satisfies an ad placement. Check the current ad specification for the placement and buying workflow.

The practical rule is simple: identify the route first, then apply that route’s duration, dimension and file-size limits. If a file works in the phone app but is rejected by an API publisher, that does not necessarily mean the video is corrupt; it may violate a stricter API field.

How to export a Reel step by step

1. Create a vertical project

  1. Open your editor’s sequence, canvas or project settings.
  2. Set the frame to a 9:16 portrait ratio.
  3. For a conventional full-screen working file, enter 1080 pixels wide by 1920 pixels high.
  4. Keep the source framing vertical while editing. If the original footage is horizontal, reframe each important shot instead of allowing the editor to place it inside permanent side bars.

Do not enlarge a low-resolution clip merely to make the project number read 1080×1920. Upscaling cannot restore detail; it only creates a larger file and can make compression artifacts more visible.

2. Choose a compatible container and codec

Export an MP4 or MOV container with H.264 or HEVC video. MP4 with H.264 is usually the least surprising combination when several tools are involved because it is supported by a wide range of phones, editors and publishing services. HEVC can reduce file size at similar visual quality, but a service that accepts the codec in principle may still fail if an intermediate tool cannot decode or pass it through correctly.

  • Wireless Remote & Complete Kit: Includes 1 phone tripod/selfie stick, 1 universal phone holder, 1 adapter, and 1 wireless remote shutter. Backed by 12-month after-sales support for everyday shooting needs.

Use a standard progressive export rather than an unusual interlaced or variable-format file. The API documentation specifically names the container and codecs above; keeping the rest of the encode conventional reduces avoidable validation errors.

3. Set frame rate and bitrate deliberately

For the API route, the frame rate must be between 23 and 60 FPS. Match the camera’s native rate when you can. Converting 24 FPS footage to 60 FPS does not create new motion detail and may introduce duplicate frames; converting a 60 FPS source to 30 FPS can be appropriate when you need a smaller file, but decide that before export.

Keep video bitrate at or below 25 Mbps for the API route. A constrained variable-bitrate setting is useful because an unconstrained VBR export can produce short peaks above the nominal number. If your encoder asks for a maximum bitrate, enter 25 Mbps or lower; if it asks for an average and a maximum, keep both within the documented ceiling.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Audio should be AAC at 48 kHz and 128 kbps. A higher audio bitrate does not compensate for poor microphone recording and can consume space without a meaningful improvement on a phone speaker.

4. Check duration and file size

For API publishing, the video must be at least 3 seconds and no longer than 15 minutes, and the final file must be 1 GB or smaller. These are limits on the encoded upload, not on the length of your editing timeline.

You can estimate the video portion of a file with this calculation:

file size in megabits ≈ video bitrate in Mbps × duration in seconds

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

At the 25 Mbps ceiling, a 60-second video carries roughly 1,500 megabits, or about 187.5 megabytes, before adding audio and container overhead. The actual file will vary with the encoder and audio track, so inspect the exported file itself. A short, high-motion clip can be larger than a longer, low-motion clip at a different bitrate.

5. Review the phone preview

Open the finished file on a phone before publishing. Check faces, captions, product labels and buttons at the top and bottom edges. Interface controls and captions can cover content even when the file meets every technical specification.

No universal official top-and-bottom “safe-zone” percentage is established by the cited guidance. Rather than applying a made-up fixed margin, preview the actual account and publishing surface you will use and move essential text away from visible controls.

Choosing between 1080×1920 and other dimensions

Why 1080×1920 is a sensible default

1080×1920 preserves the 9:16 shape, gives a sharp result on common phones and is light enough for normal editing and uploads. It is therefore a practical production standard, not evidence that Instagram accepts no larger or smaller file. The API documentation’s 1920-pixel ceiling and the 2025 media-guidelines summary’s 1920-pixel vertical ceiling should be read in the context of their respective publishing guidance.

When a different size may be appropriate

A source below 1080 pixels wide can still be usable when the app’s minimum-resolution guidance is met, but enlarging it will not improve its underlying detail. A source wider than the working canvas may need cropping or reframing to remove empty side areas. If you must preserve a wider composition, decide whether the subject remains understandable after a 9:16 crop; otherwise, the visual may technically upload but perform poorly because the important action is too small.

Wider ratios such as 1.91:1 appear in the app guidance summarized by Clapr, but they do not deliver the same full-screen vertical presentation. Use them only when the composition genuinely depends on width and you have confirmed how the target route displays the result.

Common rejection messages and practical fixes

“Unsupported format” or an immediate upload failure

  • Re-export as MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio.
  • Remove unusual audio codecs, image sequences or editing-project files that were renamed with an .mp4 extension.
  • If an API publisher is involved, confirm that it accepts the chosen codec rather than assuming app playback proves API compatibility.

“Resolution” or “aspect ratio” error

  • Verify that the actual encoded dimensions are portrait, not merely that the editor’s preview window is portrait.
  • Set the project to 9:16 and inspect the exported file’s metadata.
  • For app uploads, remember that the cited guidance allows ratios from 1.91:1 to 9:16 with a 720-pixel minimum; for API uploads, use the API’s documented 9:16 recommendation and pixel ceiling.

“File too large”

  • Check the file size after export. Source footage, cache files and the editor’s project folder do not count toward the upload size.
  • Lower the video bitrate while staying within the route’s quality requirements, shorten unnecessary sections or use a more efficient supported codec.
  • For API publishing, remain under 1 GB and 15 minutes; an app may present different limits.

“Duration not supported”

  • Trim API-bound files to between 3 seconds and 15 minutes.
  • If you are posting through the app, do not substitute the API’s 15-minute ceiling for the app guidance summarized by Clapr, which reports up to 20 minutes.
  • Recheck the route if a scheduler rejects a file that the phone app accepts.

Playback stutters, audio disappears or quality drops

  • Keep the frame rate within 23–60 FPS for API publishing and avoid unnecessary frame-rate conversions.
  • Use AAC at 48 kHz for the audio track.
  • Stay at or below the API’s 25 Mbps video bitrate ceiling; an oversized bitrate can trigger rejection or a later transcode.
  • Watch the uploaded preview. Instagram may transcode an accepted file, so the result can look different from the local master.

A route-aware export checklist

Use this checklist immediately before you send the file:

  • Route identified: phone app, publishing API or ad workflow.
  • Canvas checked: 9:16 when you want full-screen vertical presentation.
  • Dimensions verified: the exported metadata matches the intended portrait frame.
  • Container and codecs verified: MP4 or MOV; H.264 or HEVC; AAC audio.
  • Frame rate verified: 23–60 FPS for the API route.
  • Bitrates verified: no more than 25 Mbps video and 128 kbps audio for the API route.
  • Length verified: 3 seconds to 15 minutes for the API route.
  • File size verified: below 1 GB for the API route.
  • Overlay review completed: captions, faces and calls to action remain visible in the actual phone preview.

Bottom line for creators

Export a conventional Reel as 1080×1920 in a 9:16 frame, using MP4/H.264 with AAC audio unless your workflow requires another documented combination. Treat the API values—23–60 FPS, 25 Mbps video, 128 kbps audio, 3 seconds to 15 minutes and 1 GB—as route-specific constraints, not universal Instagram rules. App and ad publishing can differ, and naming the route is the key to avoiding misleading specifications and preventable rejections.
