Facebook Live is the stronger documented choice when you want viewers to browse a product list while watching a live video. Meta’s current materials describe synced catalogs, product lists and live-video ads for Facebook. Instagram can support product discovery through catalog tags and affiliate links in other formats, but the available documentation does not establish the same product-browsing setup inside Instagram Live. Neither platform has a proven universal reach advantage or a comparable current cost figure; your audience, market eligibility and route to checkout matter more than a blanket winner.
How the two platforms differ for live selling
The practical difference is the shopping path. Meta’s Facebook Live shopping materials describe viewers browsing products and seeing prices without leaving the broadcast. Instagram’s documented shopping features center on tagged products and affiliate links in Reels and feed posts, while approved sellers in supported regions can tag products in posts and Stories. Shopify’s Instagram Shopping documentation says customers complete purchases through the seller’s online store.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
That distinction does not mean Instagram cannot help sell products. It means the sources available as of October 2026 do not establish that Instagram Live has the same in-stream catalog or product-list experience Meta describes for Facebook Live. Treat product discovery, live viewing and checkout as separate parts of the customer journey, and verify what your account can actually use before promoting an event.

What Facebook Live offers for product browsing
Meta Blueprint’s May 22, 2025 training, “Increase sales with Facebook Live shopping solutions,” describes a Facebook Live event connected to a synced catalog and product list. Viewers can browse and purchase products during the stream, and the training also describes Messenger automations. This is the clearest documented in-stream shopping workflow in the sources for this comparison.

Meta’s June 18, 2026 announcement adds that Facebook live-shopping tools can be combined with live-video ads, so viewers can browse products and see prices without leaving the broadcast. That combination is relevant if you want to promote a live event beyond people already following your page while keeping the product path close to the video. It does not guarantee that a viewer will see an ad, watch the event or buy.
Prepare the catalog and product list
The documented workflow depends on having a product catalog synced for the event. Before announcing a product-focused Live, check that the items you plan to feature are represented accurately in that catalog and that the account’s commerce setup supports the intended purchase path. Product names, prices and availability shown to viewers should match what they will find when they proceed to buy.
Plan the stream around the product list rather than treating the catalog as a substitute for a demonstration. Decide which items you will feature, in what order, and how viewers can identify the product they are asking about. Meta Blueprint also describes Messenger automations as part of the seller workflow; check how those automations are configured for your account and make sure any message or next step you promise is actually available.

Meta Blueprint says live-video ads can reach high-intent shoppers beyond a seller’s current audience. It describes scheduling ads through Meta Ads Manager or boosting in Live Producer. This is a capability statement, not a promise of impressions, viewers or sales: the material does not specify a guaranteed audience size, ad rate or conversion outcome.
Meta’s June 18, 2026 announcement also says live-video ads were being expanded globally on Facebook and introduced on Instagram. The announcement describes Facebook live-shopping tools that can be combined with live-video ads, so viewers can browse products and see prices without leaving the broadcast. “Globally” describes the expansion announced by Meta; it should not be taken as confirmation that every feature is available to every account or seller in every market.
What Instagram Live can—and cannot be assumed to—do
Instagram is a plausible choice when your community already discovers products there and your selling process can move from live demonstration to a seller-site checkout. But adjacent Instagram shopping features should not be confused with an in-Live product list. Meta’s June 2026 announcement describes catalog product tagging and affiliate links for Reels and feed posts in 22 countries or regions, including Japan. Shopify’s help documentation covers product tagging in posts and Stories for approved sellers in supported regions, with customers completing purchases through the seller’s online store.

Those facts support an Instagram discovery and referral path; they do not establish that a viewer watching Instagram Live can browse the same product catalog within the broadcast. If that specific capability is essential, verify it in the current tools available to your account rather than inferring it from Reels, feed posts or Stories.
Check eligibility before building around product tags
Shopify says sellers need to be in an Instagram-supported region, meet Meta’s product requirements, receive approval and have a Meta product catalog to use product tagging. Requirements and availability can change, and approval is account-specific. Check current eligibility and product rules with Meta and the relevant commerce platform before setting a campaign date or promising a particular checkout experience.
There are two separate checks here: whether your business and products qualify for the shopping feature, and whether that feature appears in the format you intend to use. Approval to tag products in supported Instagram formats is not evidence that an identical feature is available inside Instagram Live. Confirm both the eligible format and the buyer’s eventual checkout destination.
Reach: potential is not the same as viewers
There is no substantiated head-to-head figure in the cited sources for organic Instagram Live versus Facebook Live audience reach, or for live-commerce conversion rates on either platform. Meta Blueprint’s statement that live-video ads can reach beyond existing audiences describes what paid promotion can do, not the number of people a particular seller will reach.
Meta reported more than 3.5 billion people worldwide using its apps daily in its June 18, 2026 announcement. That is an app-wide daily usage figure, not an Instagram Live audience, Facebook Live audience or estimate of the people likely to see a particular seller’s broadcast. It cannot be used to claim that either platform will deliver a specific number of potential buyers.

The figure is useful only as broad context for Meta’s overall app ecosystem. It does not divide users by platform, show how many people watch live video, or indicate how many are in a seller’s target market. There is also no independent comparable live-commerce audience statistic in the reviewed material that fills that gap.

Use your own audience and campaign evidence
For an individual seller, a useful platform decision starts with audience overlap and observed behavior rather than broad platform totals. Compare the people who follow you on each platform with the customers you want to reach, then use past Live attendance and campaign results where you have them. If you have not run a Live before, treat the first event as a test of your own format and promotion—not as evidence of a platform-wide reach advantage.
- Look at which platform already has the more engaged community for the products you plan to demonstrate.
- Use prior live attendance or campaign data from your own accounts when available; the sources do not provide a neutral benchmark to substitute for it.
- Separate organic distribution from paid promotion in your planning and reporting.
- Track the path from viewers to product interest and completed orders using the measurement tools available to your account and checkout system.
Keep the comparison fair by looking at similar events and separating the effect of promotion from the platform itself. For example, if one broadcast receives paid support and the other does not, a difference in attendance cannot be treated as an organic reach comparison. Compare the same kinds of outcomes—such as attendance and orders—and note the different checkout routes, rather than relying on total views alone.
Costs: what can be stated, and what must be checked
The available sources do not provide a current, comparable price for Instagram Live versus Facebook Live, a complete seller fee schedule, or a current rate card for live-video ads. Meta Blueprint confirms that paid promotion is an option, but does not state its price. Meta’s May 19, 2020 Facebook Shops announcement historically described creating a Shop as free; that old statement does not establish the present-day total cost of selling or the charges that may apply to a particular merchant.
Budget by cost category rather than treating “Live” as one all-in price. An organic broadcast, an ad campaign, an online store and payment processing may involve different terms. The sources here do not establish whether or how much any of those items will cost your business, so check current account and provider terms for your market before setting a margin or promotion budget.
- Broadcast and promotion: Organic streaming is distinct from optional paid live-video ads. Any ad spend depends on the campaign and account; no comparable current rate is stated.
- Commerce platform: A catalog or seller-site checkout can involve terms set by the commerce provider. The cited material does not give a complete current schedule.
- Payment and order costs: The cited sources do not establish comparable transaction or payment-processing fees for these two Live options.
- Production: A phone tripod or ring light may be useful for a product demonstration, but it is creator equipment, not a platform requirement.
For planning, write down which costs are known for your business and which require confirmation. Ask your commerce provider about the account’s current catalog and checkout terms, and review the promotion settings and spend you intend to use in Ads Manager or Live Producer. If you sell through an online store, include the terms of that store and its payment route in your own calculation; do not assume that a historical statement about creating a Shop covers those separate costs.
Meta named Shopify and BigCommerce among partners in its 2020 Shops announcement, and Shopify currently documents an Instagram Shopping path. Those details identify relevant commerce-tool categories, not a current endorsement, commission rate or verified affiliate deal. Check the provider terms directly rather than assuming a partnership means a particular feature or price applies to your store.

Choose the platform around the purchase path
Choose Facebook Live when in-stream browsing is the priority
Facebook is the more straightforward fit if your key requirement is for viewers to browse a catalog and see product prices without leaving the broadcast. Meta’s materials document that workflow along with the option to promote a live video through ads. Confirm the account’s current commerce eligibility and checkout details before relying on it.
Choose Instagram when your audience and seller-site route are the better fit
Instagram can make sense when your intended customers are more engaged there and you are comfortable directing them through a seller-site checkout or using product discovery features documented for Reels, feed posts and Stories. Do not assume those tagged-product experiences automatically carry over into Instagram Live.
Use both only when each has a defined job
If you have audiences on both services, one can support discovery while the other hosts the documented in-stream catalog workflow. That is a campaign choice, not a guarantee of more reach or sales. Decide in advance where the product list and checkout live, how viewers will move between formats, and which account-level features are confirmed for your market.
A useful decision rule is to start with the clearest purchase path for your intended customer. If in-broadcast product browsing is essential, Facebook has the clearest support in the current materials reviewed. If your audience is more active on Instagram and your seller-site checkout is acceptable, Instagram may fit your customer journey even without assuming an in-Live catalog. In either case, verify account eligibility and current terms before you commit to a feature in your promotion.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical pre-event checklist
- Confirm the shopping feature. For Facebook, check that the account’s catalog and product-list setup support the intended Live. For Instagram, verify the supported-region, product-compliance and approval requirements before relying on product tagging.
- Choose the checkout route. Make clear whether buyers can purchase through the Facebook Live shopping experience or will be sent to the seller’s online store. Test the route from a viewer’s perspective where possible.
- Check the products. Review catalog details and prices for the items you will feature; remove or correct anything that is unavailable or inaccurate.
- Decide whether to pay for promotion. If you want to extend reach, review the current Ads Manager or Live Producer options and set a budget you can support. The cited sources do not establish a standard ad cost.
- Plan the demonstration. Prepare the order in which you will show items and answer likely questions. Optional equipment such as a stable phone stand and lighting can help viewers see the products, but neither is a platform prerequisite.
- Measure the outcome. Record attendance and the steps that lead to orders using the data available in your social account and checkout system. Compare your own results across events rather than treating a platform-wide usage figure as a forecast.
Use that checklist as a final go/no-go review, not just a setup list. The main preventable problems are advertising a shopping feature before confirming it is enabled, showing catalog details that do not match the current offer, and failing to explain where the buyer completes the order. A quick account and viewer-side check can reveal whether the advertised path is actually available before customers arrive.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

The cited sources document specific platform capabilities, not a universal seller outcome. They do not establish which service produces more organic Live viewers, a higher live-shopping conversion rate, a lower total cost, or a better result for a particular product category. They also do not provide a complete, current list of ad rates, transaction fees or seller charges. Those questions depend on account, market, campaign and checkout terms that should be confirmed directly before launch.

Likewise, there is no named spokesperson in the reviewed material recommending one platform over the other. Meta’s June 2026 announcement is an official company statement about product changes, not an independent comparison or a personal endorsement. Treat the evidence as a guide to documented features and verify current functionality in your own account.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can viewers shop directly during Instagram Live?
The current sources reviewed do not establish that Instagram Live has the same in-stream catalog or product-list browsing described for Facebook Live. Meta documents product tagging and affiliate links in Instagram Reels and feed posts, while Shopify describes product tagging in posts and Stories for eligible sellers; Shopify says customers complete purchases through the seller’s online store. Verify the exact features available to your account before planning around them.
Which platform has better reach for selling products live?
The sources do not provide a fair, comparable organic-reach or live-conversion benchmark for Instagram Live and Facebook Live. Meta says Facebook live-video ads can reach beyond a seller’s current audience, but that is a capability, not a guaranteed number of viewers or buyers. Compare your own audience overlap, past attendance and campaign results.
How much does it cost to sell on Instagram Live or Facebook Live?
No current comparable price, complete seller fee schedule or live-ad rate is provided in the reviewed sources. Paid promotion is optional, and the seller’s commerce platform and payment route may have separate terms. Check current account, market and provider terms before setting a budget; Meta’s 2020 statement that creating a Facebook Shop was free is historical, not a complete current cost estimate.
What does a seller need to tag products on Instagram?
Shopify’s documentation says sellers need to be in an Instagram-supported region, meet Meta’s product requirements, be approved and have a Meta product catalog. Eligibility and features can vary by account and market, so confirm current requirements and the supported format before promoting product tags.
Can Facebook Live ads reach people who do not follow my business?
Meta Blueprint says live-video ads can reach high-intent shoppers beyond a seller’s current audience and describes scheduling through Meta Ads Manager or boosting in Live Producer. It does not promise a specific reach, ad price or sales result, so review the options for your account and set a budget you can support.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Choose Facebook Live if in-stream catalog browsing and seeing prices without leaving the broadcast is your deciding requirement; that is the clearest documented live-shopping workflow in the sources reviewed. Choose Instagram when your audience is stronger there and product discovery can lead to your online-store checkout, but do not assume Reels, feed or Story shopping features work the same way inside Instagram Live. Neither platform has a proven universal reach advantage or a comparable current cost figure, so verify eligibility and fees and judge performance using your own campaign data.
