On October 1, 2026, Elon Musk replied to an X post about deleting Instagram with the line, “Instagram is for girls.” The remark echoed a jab he had made in May, and prompted a mix of agreement, jokes and criticism online. It was Musk’s opinion—not a factual description of Instagram’s audience or an announced position from Meta.
What did Musk say, and what was he replying to?
Musk responded on X to Geiger Capital, which had posted that it had deleted Instagram and described it as “an inherently female app” with “zero benefit.” Musk’s reply was: “Instagram is for girls.” The exchange was reported on October 2; the quoted remarks are attributed to the accounts by news coverage. Hindustan Times and India Today reported the exchange.

The exchange was brief. The available coverage does not establish Musk’s private reasoning, so the remark should not be treated as an explanation of Instagram’s users or as a considered argument about the service.

The wording was not entirely new: coverage says Musk made a similar “Instagram is for girls” remark in May 2026. The October reply landed against the broader competition between Meta and X. Meta launched Threads in July 2023 as a text-based service developed by Instagram’s team, with Instagram sign-in, amid competition with X. That context helps explain why a swipe at Instagram can be framed as part of a platform rivalry; it does not make this individual exchange an official Meta–X statement. Hindustan Times

How did people react?
News reports selected examples from the replies: some users agreed or joked that “X is for the boys,” while others rejected the gender label and described Instagram as welcoming to people of all genders. Hindustan Times quoted one user saying the service offered “body positivity, inclusivity and diverse representation.” These are reported reactions, not the findings of a survey, and they cannot show what Instagram users generally think. Does Instagram’s audience data support the claim?
Not as a broad description of the platform. India Today attributed October 2025 audience estimates to Statista: globally, 50.6% male and 49.4% female; in the United States, 44.8% male and 55.2% female. Those figures are reported secondhand here; the underlying Statista data and methodology were not independently checked. They suggest a near-even global split in the reported estimate, but cannot define Instagram’s entire audience, account for every gender identity, or establish that the app is “for” any one group.
