The Insta360 Luna Ultra’s case is its combination of a 20mm-equivalent main camera, a 60mm-equivalent telephoto camera, and a detachable touchscreen in one compact three-axis gimbal. That makes it an unusual option for vloggers and mobile filmmakers who want both wide and tighter framing without changing cameras. It is not a 360-degree camera, and its higher launch price makes it a specialized purchase rather than an automatic upgrade for every creator.
What the Luna Ultra is—and what it is not
Insta360 positions the Luna Ultra as a portable, dual-lens gimbal camera co-engineered with Leica. Unlike a 360 camera, it records conventional framed video; you choose between its two camera modules rather than capturing a full sphere to reframe later. If you specifically want to change the viewing direction after recording, this is the wrong type of camera.

The main module pairs a 1-inch sensor with a 20mm-equivalent f/1.8 lens. The telephoto module has a 1/1.3-inch sensor and a 60mm-equivalent f/2.0 lens. The second view is a distinct optical camera, not simply a crop from the wide camera. Those focal lengths give the device a useful range from environmental vlogging to tighter portraits or details, though the available material does not establish comparative image quality through controlled testing.

Two fields of view in a pocket gimbal
The 20mm-equivalent lens suits arm’s-length presentation and broader scenes. The 60mm-equivalent lens can make a subject fill more of the frame from farther away, which is useful for details and more compressed-looking portraits. Switching focal lengths is a practical advantage over relying on digital zoom, but it does not make the Luna Ultra a camera with interchangeable lenses.

A screen that can leave the camera
The detachable 2-inch OLED touchscreen is also a control module, according to Insta360. When separated from the camera, it can help the operator see and control a shot while the gimbal is positioned away from them. That design is especially relevant to solo creators setting up a talking-head shot or placing the camera for a difficult angle. The manufacturer’s product information describes the feature, but the available reviewer reports do not provide a standardized comparison of its range or control reliability.
Mechanical stabilization and subject tracking
Insta360 lists three-axis mechanical stabilization and Deep Track 5.0 subject tracking. Together, they target handheld movement and keeping a subject framed, two common needs in travel clips and walk-and-talk videos. These are manufacturer-listed capabilities; they should not be read as proof that every moving subject or lighting condition will be tracked perfectly.

Recording modes: high ceilings, with mode-specific limits
Insta360’s current specifications list 8K (7680 × 4320) recording at up to 30 fps, 4K at up to 120 fps, and 1080p at up to 240 fps. The maximums are not available in every mode or aspect ratio. Specialized options, including PureVideo and Stage Mode, have their own limits, so check the specific mode table before planning a project around a particular resolution and frame rate: Insta360 Luna Ultra specifications.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor a buyer, the important distinction is between a headline maximum and the mode they will actually use. High frame rates can support slow-motion footage, while 8K can provide extra resolution for cropping or downsampling; neither figure alone establishes low-light quality, rolling-shutter behavior, or how well stabilization holds up in motion. Those performance questions need to be judged from footage and testing in the conditions that matter to you.

Storage, battery life, and practical limits
Internal and removable storage
Insta360 currently lists 47GB of internal storage and microSD support up to 2TB. Digital Camera World’s review lists support up to 1TB, creating a material discrepancy between that review and the current manufacturer specification. Treat 2TB as the manufacturer’s stated maximum, not a guarantee for every card: verify the current card recommendations and compatibility before buying a high-capacity card. Insta360’s product page names SanDisk Extreme and Lexar BLUE microSDXC families, with capacities listed through 2TB: Insta360 Luna Ultra product page.
Runtime is a lab figure, not a typical-day promise
Insta360 states up to 240 minutes of runtime, measured in its lab at 25°C while recording 1080p24 with the screen and Wi-Fi off. That is a specific test condition, not an expectation for continuous use with the display active, wireless features enabled, higher-resolution modes, or variable temperatures. Plan for shorter real-world sessions unless your own workflow matches the stated setup.

Weather protection is not established
The reviewed official product information does not provide a formal water-resistance rating. An India-focused review says the camera is neither waterproof nor splash-proof and advises keeping it away from rain and splashes. Since an official rating is not established here, do not assume it is suitable for wet-weather shooting: Insta360 India review.

TechRadar says its reviewer tested the Luna Ultra for a month and describes it as an impressive alternative in the compact vlogging category. The review notes that Insta360 supplied a Creator Bundle for testing. Digital Camera World says its reviewer used a pre-release unit, updated it to launch firmware, and tested it over several weeks in multiple locations. These are useful reported impressions, but neither source is a controlled, side-by-side test covering every competing camera and shooting condition.

Insta360 announced the Luna Ultra on June 10, 2026, with a U.S. starting price of $769.99 and sales through Amazon and other retailers. Who should consider the Luna Ultra?
A strong fit for creators who need framing flexibility
- Vloggers who want both a wide presentation view and a tighter optical view in a compact gimbal.
- Solo shooters who may benefit from a detachable screen/control module when framing the camera remotely.
- Mobile filmmakers who value high-resolution and high-frame-rate options, provided their chosen mode supports the needed combination.
Less compelling for buyers with simpler needs
- Anyone whose main goal is 360-degree capture and post-shoot reframing should choose a true 360 camera instead.
- Creators who only need a single wide angle may not benefit enough from the second lens and modular screen to justify a premium over simpler pocket gimbals.
- People who regularly film in rain or around splashes should not rely on water protection that has not been formally established.
Verdict: an ambitious pocket gimbal with a specific audience
The Luna Ultra’s strongest argument is the combination of two genuinely different focal lengths and a detachable control screen in a stabilized compact camera. Its headline recording modes and accessory ecosystem broaden its appeal, but the figures need context: maximum frame rates vary by mode, runtime comes from a constrained lab test, and current pricing and regional stock require a live check. The choice makes most sense for creators who will regularly use the telephoto view or remote framing; for everyone else, those features may not justify its launch-tier positioning.
