Choose the Flow 2 Pro if you want Android tracking through Insta360’s app, Deep Track 4.0 for people, animals and objects, or continuous 360-degree pan movement. Choose the Osmo Mobile 8 if your priority is its documented DockKit setup on a compatible iPhone and its Multifunctional Module’s cat-and-dog tracking. Your phone model, operating-system version, camera or streaming app, and the exact accessory bundle matter more than the logo on the handle.
Both manufacturers publish compatibility limits and different tracking routes. Neither set of documents establishes a fair, independent comparison of stabilization quality, tracking reliability, battery life or current price, so those should not be treated as settled advantages. Quick verdict: which gimbal fits which buyer?
- Choose Flow 2 Pro for an Android-first setup. Insta360 documents Deep Track 4.0 inside the Insta360 app for Android, while Apple DockKit is an iPhone technology.
- Choose Flow 2 Pro when you want to track more than people. Insta360 says Deep Track 4.0 can follow people, animals and objects.
- Choose Flow 2 Pro for unrestricted pan movement. Its published design includes continuous 360° pan and 360° free tilt modes.
- Choose Osmo Mobile 8 when your workflow is an eligible iPhone app using DockKit. DJI specifies iPhone 12 or later with iOS 18.5 or later, with exclusions for the iPhone SE (3rd generation) and iPhone 16e.
- Choose Osmo Mobile 8 if you specifically need the Multifunctional Module’s documented cat-and-dog tracking. Confirm whether that module is included in the bundle you are considering.
- Do not choose on advertised runtime alone. The published figures use different products and test conditions, and they are not a direct head-to-head measurement.

What is actually being compared?
“Insta360 phone gimbal” can refer to several Flow models. The current comparison is centered on the Insta360 Flow 2 Pro and the DJI Osmo Mobile 8. Insta360 also sells Flow 2 and Flow 2 Plus, whose tracking and accessory configurations differ. Treating every Flow 2 model as if it had the Pro’s capabilities can lead to the wrong purchase.

Both products are three-axis smartphone gimbals intended to keep a mounted phone level while you walk, film yourself, make a call or stream. The important distinction is how subject tracking is delivered. Flow 2 Pro offers Apple DockKit on compatible iPhones plus Insta360’s own Deep Track 4.0 in the Insta360 app. Osmo Mobile 8 offers a direct DockKit route on eligible iPhones and a separate Multifunctional Module that DJI says adds cat and dog tracking to person tracking.
Phone and operating-system compatibility
Compatibility is the first buying check because a gimbal can still stabilize a phone when a particular tracking mode is unavailable. The requirements below apply to the documented DockKit modes, not necessarily every basic mounting or stabilization function.
| Feature or requirement | Insta360 Flow 2 Pro | DJI Osmo Mobile 8 |
|---|---|---|
| DockKit phone requirement | iPhone 12 or later | iPhone 12 or later |
| DockKit operating system | iOS 17.0 or later | iOS 18.5 or later |
| Documented exclusions | iPhone SE series and iPhone 16e | iPhone SE (3rd generation) and iPhone 16e |
| DockKit app requirement | Only apps that support DockKit; check the intended app’s support list | Only DockKit-compatible iOS apps; check DJI’s current FAQ and the app’s support |
| Android tracking route | Deep Track in the Insta360 app; Apple DockKit does not apply | An Android tracking route was not established in the reviewed Osmo Mobile 8 documentation |
For Flow 2 Pro, Insta360’s support documentation says DockKit native tracking requires an iPhone 12 or later running iOS 17.0 or higher, excluding the iPhone SE series and iPhone 16e. Read the current requirements at Insta360’s DockKit support page.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDJI’s Osmo Mobile 8 FAQ sets a later minimum of iOS 18.5 and excludes the third-generation iPhone SE and iPhone 16e. That means an iPhone can meet Flow 2 Pro’s DockKit requirement yet fail Osmo Mobile 8’s operating-system requirement. Confirm the exact model rather than relying on the name “iPhone 12 or later.”

DockKit is an Apple platform feature, not a universal gimbal protocol. Insta360 describes it as “an automatic subject tracking technology developed by Apple and relies on the specific technical support of the iOS system.” DJI likewise describes Apple DockKit as a subject-tracking technology developed by Apple. In practical terms, the app must support DockKit, the phone must meet the stated iOS requirement, and the gimbal must be connected in the mode that the manufacturer documents.
How the tracking systems differ
Flow 2 Pro: DockKit for iPhone apps
Flow 2 Pro can use DockKit with the native iPhone camera and supported third-party apps after NFC pairing. This is the route to investigate if you want to keep using an iPhone camera, video-call, social or streaming app rather than moving into Insta360’s own camera environment. “Supported” is app-specific; the manufacturer advises checking the list for the app you actually intend to use. A DockKit-compatible app can still have its own controls, permissions and feature limits.
Flow 2 Pro: Deep Track 4.0 in the Insta360 app
Insta360’s own Deep Track 4.0 is a separate system from DockKit. Insta360 says it can track people, animals and objects, and says Android users can use Deep Track in the Insta360 app. This gives the Flow 2 Pro a documented path for Android owners and for subjects that are not people. It does not mean every Android camera or social app receives the same tracking; the feature is tied to the Insta360 app unless an additional accessory provides another route.

DJI documents direct phone connection through NFC and native camera tracking through DockKit-compatible iOS apps. For this direct DockKit mode, DJI instructs users to close DJI Mimo and remove the Multifunctional Module. That requirement matters if you bought the module for another tracking mode: the accessory and the direct DockKit setup are not interchangeable steps.

DJI says the Osmo Mobile 8 Multifunctional Module upgrades tracking to include cats and dogs as well as people. The reviewed FAQ does not establish every supported app, phone model or bundle configuration for that accessory, so check the current DJI listing before assuming it is included or that it works in your chosen app.
Movement, mounting and physical specifications
Flow 2 Pro’s published specifications
Insta360 lists a three-axis stabilizer, continuous 360° pan range and a 360° free-tilt mode for Flow 2 Pro. The same comparison material says Flow 2 and Flow 2 Plus have a more limited pan range, so do not transfer the Pro’s movement claim to those models.
The Flow 2 Pro gimbal weighs approximately 357 g, and the magnetic clamp weighs approximately 25 g. Insta360 lists a compatible phone width of 64–84 mm, thickness of 6.9–10 mm and phone weight of 130–300 g. These are manufacturer specifications; a phone case, lens attachment or other accessory can change whether your particular setup fits or balances correctly. Check the phone’s weight with the case installed, not just the bare handset.

The reviewed Osmo Mobile 8 FAQ documents its NFC connection, DockKit requirements and Multifunctional Module, but it does not provide comparable weight, clamp dimensions, phone-thickness limits or a pan-range figure in the material available for this comparison. Those cells should be checked in DJI’s current specifications before you buy a phone that is unusually large, heavy or fitted with a thick case. It would be misleading to call either gimbal lighter, stronger or more mobile based only on the documents cited here.

Battery life: read the test conditions, not just the number
Insta360 lists Flow 2 Pro runtime as 10 hours when the gimbal is balanced on a flat surface at 25°C/77°F and its tracking ring light is off. DJI’s published figure cited for the Osmo Mobile 7/7P is approximately 10 hours when balanced and stationary without accessories; DJI notes that runtime decreases when tracking and lights are used. That figure is for the 7 Series, not a direct Osmo Mobile 8 test.
| Published runtime statement | What the qualification means |
|---|---|
| Flow 2 Pro: 10 hours | Manufacturer test condition: balanced on a flat surface, 25°C/77°F, tracking ring light off. See Insta360 specifications. |
| DJI Osmo Mobile 7/7P: approximately 10 hours | Balanced and stationary without accessories; DJI says tracking and light use reduce runtime. See DJI’s Osmo Mobile 7 Series specifications. |
| Osmo Mobile 8 direct comparison | Not established in the reviewed material; do not treat the 7/7P figure as an Osmo Mobile 8 measurement. |
Walking, repeated repositioning, active subject tracking, a tracking light and charging another device can all change real use. The available figures therefore support a planning estimate, not a claim that one model lasts longer than the other.
Bundles and accessories can change the decision
Flow 2, Flow 2 Plus and Flow 2 Pro
Insta360’s comparison FAQ says the Flow 2 Plus bundle includes an AI Tracker. Standard Flow 2 and Flow 2 Pro bundles do not include the tracker, although it can be bought separately. Insta360 describes the AI Tracker as enabling tracking in third-party apps on iOS and Android.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
This creates three separate questions: which Flow gimbal you are buying, whether the AI Tracker is in that specific box, and whether the tracker supports the app you use. Osmo Mobile 8 Multifunctional Module
The Multifunctional Module is central to DJI’s documented cat-and-dog tracking claim, but the cited FAQ does not establish whether every Osmo Mobile 8 package includes it. If your main subject is a pet, price the correct package or accessory and verify compatibility with your phone and app. For direct DockKit operation, DJI says to remove the module and close DJI Mimo.
Tripods and older-series accessory references
DJI’s Osmo Mobile 7 FAQ says the DJI OM Grip Tripod is sold separately and is recommended when conditions are unsuitable for the built-in tripod. That statement is explicitly about the Osmo Mobile 7 Series. It does not prove Osmo Mobile 8 compatibility, so do not assume the tripod fits the newer model without a current DJI confirmation.

If you record in a social or streaming app, start by checking that app rather than assuming a gimbal’s own application will control it. DockKit only works where the app implements it. Conversely, Deep Track’s documented Android route is inside Insta360’s app, so it may require a change in your recording workflow.
Setup guide: Flow 2 Pro
Using DockKit on an eligible iPhone
- Confirm that the phone is an iPhone 12 or later, runs iOS 17.0 or later, and is not an iPhone SE model or iPhone 16e under Insta360’s documented exclusions.
- Mount the phone within the 64–84 mm width, 6.9–10 mm thickness and 130–300 g weight limits. Balance it before recording.
- Pair the phone and gimbal through NFC as described in Insta360’s DockKit instructions.
- Open the native camera or a third-party app that supports DockKit. Check that app’s own tracking permission or control; an unsupported app will not gain DockKit tracking merely because the gimbal is connected.
- Test the framing, subject and movement before starting a live stream or important take.
Using Deep Track on Android or iPhone
- Install and update the Insta360 app, then confirm your phone fits the published clamp and weight limits.
- Mount and balance the phone, connect the gimbal in the app’s normal connection flow, and grant the permissions the app requests.
- Select the app’s tracking function and choose the person, animal or object you want it to follow. Deep Track is separate from Apple DockKit.
- Walk through the planned distance and lighting conditions. If the subject leaves the frame or another object becomes dominant, stop and reframe before recording.
Setup guide: Osmo Mobile 8
Using direct DockKit on iPhone
- Confirm an iPhone 12 or later with iOS 18.5 or later. Exclude the iPhone SE (3rd generation) and iPhone 16e, as specified by DJI.
- Connect the phone directly using NFC according to DJI’s current instructions.
- Close DJI Mimo and remove the Multifunctional Module for the direct DockKit mode; DJI specifically calls out both steps.
- Open an iOS app that supports DockKit and enable its tracking controls. The app must support the feature independently.
- Record a short test, checking that the phone remains balanced and the app keeps the intended subject in frame.
Using the Multifunctional Module
- Check whether your package includes the module or whether it must be purchased separately.
- Use DJI’s current pairing and app instructions for the module rather than the direct DockKit procedure.
- Confirm that the cat, dog or person tracking mode is available for your phone and intended app.
- Test pet movement before relying on tracking for a live broadcast; the manufacturer’s feature description does not establish performance in every environment.
Common buying and setup mistakes
- Confusing DockKit with universal tracking. DockKit is limited to compatible iPhones and apps. Android phones need a different route.
- Checking the phone model but not the operating system. Osmo Mobile 8’s documented iOS minimum is 18.5, while Flow 2 Pro’s is 17.0 for DockKit.
- Assuming an SE is supported because it is a recent iPhone. Insta360 excludes the SE series in its DockKit guidance; DJI specifically excludes the third-generation SE.
- Buying a standard Flow 2 Pro box expecting an AI Tracker. Insta360 says the tracker is not included in standard Flow 2 or Flow 2 Pro bundles.
- Leaving DJI Mimo open during direct Osmo Mobile 8 DockKit use. DJI instructs users to close it and remove the Multifunctional Module for that mode.
- Comparing runtime numbers without conditions. The Flow figure uses a flat, balanced setup at 25°C/77°F with the tracking light off; the cited DJI figure is for Osmo Mobile 7/7P and excludes accessories.
- Assuming a third-party app is supported. Check the current app and manufacturer compatibility lists before buying for a specific social, camera, call or streaming workflow.
- Using Flow 2 Pro movement claims for every Flow 2 model. Insta360 identifies the continuous 360° pan and 360° free-tilt description specifically with Flow 2 Pro.
How to make the final purchase decision
- Write down the exact phone model and OS version. Include whether it is an iPhone SE or iPhone 16e, and update the operating system before judging compatibility.
- Name the app you will use most. Decide whether you need the native camera, a particular social app, a video-call app, a streaming app or Insta360’s own app.
- Choose the tracking subject. People-only iPhone tracking, Android tracking, pet tracking and object tracking point to different modes and accessories.
- Check what is in the box. Compare the Flow 2 Pro bundle with and without the AI Tracker, and verify the Osmo Mobile 8 Multifunctional Module.
- Confirm physical fit. Flow 2 Pro’s published limits are 64–84 mm wide, 6.9–10 mm thick and 130–300 g; seek DJI’s current limits for Osmo Mobile 8 if your phone is outside ordinary size or weight.
- Compare the delivered price in your region. Include accessories, taxes, shipping, warranty and the cost of a separate tracker or module; no current price winner is established here.
- Buy only after a compatibility check. A short review of the manufacturer FAQ and your app’s support page can prevent a gimbal purchase that stabilizes correctly but cannot track in the workflow you need.
Bottom line
Flow 2 Pro is the more flexible documented choice for Android users, Insta360-app workflows, people/animal/object tracking and continuous 360° pan movement. Osmo Mobile 8 is a sensible alternative for an eligible iPhone workflow built around DockKit, particularly if you want DJI’s Multifunctional Module for cat and dog tracking. Neither should be declared universally better from manufacturer specifications alone. Match the gimbal to your exact phone, operating system, app, subject and bundle, then verify the current regional price.
