What is the banyan-tree restaurant in Mehrauli like?
The courtyard is central to the restaurant’s identity. Hindustan Times describes seating beneath a banyan that the founders say is 525 years old. That age is their description, reported by the publication, rather than an independently verified measurement.
The setting combines open air, filtered light and water with brick, reclaimed wood, arches and pillars. The publication also reports work by Sri Lankan artist Raki Nikahetiya and a batik-sarong canvas from the Lovebirds collection. Rather than treating the courtyard as backdrop alone, the founders describe the landscape as something to preserve: “For me, respecting the landscape includes knowing how much to leave alone,” co-founder and architect Anurag Dania told Hindustan Times.

What inspired Zetu’s architecture and art?
The founders describe the design as an interpretation of Sri Lankan principles and memories, not a literal reproduction of a Sri Lankan building. Sarah Nikahetiya cited Geoffrey Bawa’s tropical modernism and its connection between indoor and outdoor space, as well as architect Minnette de Silva. She described Bawa’s influence as “the indoor meeting the outdoor and things being very well ventilated but very naturally.” Dania pointed to Kandyan pillars and bas-relief, local materials and objects at the Colombo National Museum. These are the founders’ stated references, as reported in the Hindustan Times interview.
Dania also gave a specific design ambition: “The design target was approximately 26°C in the seating areas during extreme summer conditions.” This is an attributed target, not a published measurement of the restaurant’s actual temperature. Hindustan Times reported a capacity of 175 seats.

Is Zetu Delhi’s first Sri Lankan restaurant?
Recent publications describe Zetu as Delhi’s first dedicated Sri Lankan restaurant. That is useful context for its positioning, but it should be read as reported coverage rather than the result of a complete, independently audited survey of every restaurant in the city. The more firmly established distinction in the coverage is its focus: a permanent restaurant built around contemporary Sri Lankan cuisine, rather than a wider menu with Sri Lankan dishes as a side offering.
