Inside Bharat1.AI’s plan for a proposed AI city near Bengaluru’s Agara Lake

Bharat1.AI is pursuing a two-stage project: a partly operational AI research campus on Sarjapur Road and a much larger, still-proposed 70-acre city near Agara Lake. The campus is intended to provide infrastructure for AI teams; the city is pitched as a real-world test environment for robotics, agentic AI and human-machine interaction. Its 2029 opening, scale and funding remain company plans reported by the press—not completed outcomes.

What is Bharat1.AI’s AI city?

It is a proposal to build a 70-acre environment near Agara Lake where people, their digital twins and robots would interact. Bharat1.AI says the setting would let researchers test AI systems in physical, changing conditions and develop uses for physical and agentic AI. Moneycontrol’s 6 October 2026 report describes it as a city-scale simulator for AI training and inference; Gadgets 360’s 17 February 2026 coverage similarly framed the idea as a place to stress-test AI agents and physical AI in real-world scenarios.

The “AI city” label does not mean that AI would govern Bengaluru or that this proposed site is already operating. The project is a testbed concept, and its planned scale should be read as a forecast, not as a description of an existing urban district.

How the two phases differ

Phase Status and location Purpose and scale
B1 AI SuperPark Campus at RGA Tech Park on Sarjapur Road. Moneycontrol reported it had opened more than two months before its 6 October 2026 story and saw its second floor operational during a visit. A 500,000-square-foot AI research and innovation campus, with reported capacity for 8,000–10,000 people. It provides infrastructure and services for AI teams.
Proposed AI city Planned for 70 acres near Agara Lake; Moneycontrol reported land had been finalized and an opening was expected by 2029. A projected environment for researchers, workers, robots and sensors, intended for city-scale physical-AI testing. The opening date and proposed installations are not verified completed outcomes.

What B1 AI SuperPark offers AI teams

The first phase is a campus, not a consumer AI product. Moneycontrol reported startup infrastructure, research facilities, GPU access and cloud leasing as the initial revenue model. Bharat1.AI’s official SuperPark site describes digital infrastructure such as AI compute and high-speed cloud connectivity, alongside physical facilities including labs, sandbox environments, demo spaces and co-innovation zones. The company lists its audience as AI startups, researchers, enterprises, investors and partners, and gives its location as B1 AI SuperPark, RGA Tech Park, Block No. 4, Sarjapura, Bengaluru.

The launch announcement, as reported by The Times of India on 17 February 2026, said the campus would support model training, fine-tuning and inference. That account attributed to the company a claim of connectivity up to 400 Gbps with sub-millisecond latency to major AI cloud platforms. Moneycontrol’s October report separately described a physical line between Bengaluru and Mumbai alongside a high-tension power cable, as well as data-centre collaborations. Those accounts describe different infrastructure details; neither should be treated as an independently verified network specification.

Partners and startup target

Moneycontrol reported about 15 foundational partners and said many were in the process of setting up hubs at the facility. The partners it named include NVIDIA, Neysa, Lightstorm, The Airawat Research Foundation (IIT Kanpur), SPARC (Safety, Privacy & AI Research Centre, IISc), Wadhwani School of AI & Intelligent Systems (IIT Kanpur), BITS Pilani, iSPIRT Foundation, IIT Ropar and CHARAKA CoE of the Karnataka government. Bharat1.AI’s reported goal is to have more than 100 foundational AI startups operating at the campus within a year of the November launch. That is a target, not a confirmed count. Being named as a partner does not, by itself, establish a specific deployment, contract or endorsement of every part of the proposed city.

What the proposed city could contain

According to Moneycontrol’s account of the plan, about 6,000 researchers would live at the site and 25,000 people would work there. The company also projects around 2,500 cameras, 800 radars and more than 6,000 robots. These are proposed figures, not verified installations or a final operating specification.

Rahul Kulshresth, Bharat1.AI’s Head of Strategic Partnerships and Collaborations, described the idea to Moneycontrol as: “We are creating a city-scale simulator for AI training, inferencing and building use cases. The idea is to create an ecosystem where humans will co-exist with robots and we can create real-world physical AI use cases,”

The motivation is to test systems beyond text and static datasets. Robots and other AI systems that act in the physical world encounter people, objects and conditions that can change; the company’s stated aim is to create a place where researchers can examine those interactions in realistic settings. Moneycontrol reported a further company projection of one exabyte of data a year, which its article glossed as one billion gigabytes annually. That is a projected data volume, not a measured output.

How much will it cost, and is the money secured?

Moneycontrol reported on 6 October 2026 that Bharat1.AI was in the process of raising $650 million for the overall project. The reported funding mix was around $300 million from equity, with the balance expected from debt. This describes a fundraising effort, not money confirmed as raised or financing already committed. The report also said the company was engaging governments in several countries about collaboration.

Who is behind the project?

Bharat1.AI’s co-founders are Umakant Soni, Subhashis Banerjee and Sireesh Kupendra. Moneycontrol identified Emmanuel Bacry and former Department of Science and Technology Secretary Prof. Ashutosh Sharma as founding advisers, and Rahul Kulshresth as Head of Strategic Partnerships and Collaborations.

Soni has presented the campus as the first step toward testing AI in complex real-world environments. In The Times of India’s 17 February 2026 account of the launch, he said: “Scaling systems without validating them in complex, real-world environments is a risk we cannot afford… The B1 AI Superpark is the first step toward creating a city-scale validation framework where agentic and physical AI can evolve responsibly, not just powerfully.” This is the company’s rationale for the project, rather than evidence that the proposed city has been built or independently validated.

What is known about resident data and safety?

Soni told Moneycontrol that the city would focus on AI safety and data for frontier-model research, with safeguards and consent for researchers who live there. That is a stated commitment. The report does not describe how consent would work or establish rules for data retention and deletion, camera and radar data, digital-twin rights, privacy architecture or independent oversight. Those are consequential details for a site planned to collect extensive sensor data and support human-machine interaction.

What remains uncertain about the plan?

The larger city’s proposed scale should not be confused with the more limited status reported for the SuperPark. Moneycontrol said Bharat1.AI had finalized land near Agara Lake, but land finalization alone does not establish that all planning and construction permissions are in place. The reviewed reports also do not verify binding financing commitments or a detailed operating framework for data governance. The 2029 date, population, workforce, sensor and robot counts, and annual data estimate are projections attributed to the company.

The clearest way to read the blueprint is as an AI infrastructure campus already reported to be partly operational, followed by an ambitious proposed physical-AI test environment whose delivery, safeguards and operating model are not yet established in the cited reporting.
