Inscryption Keeps Crashing on Windows PC: A Practical Fix Guide

Inscryption crashes on Windows most often because of an outdated graphics driver or Steam installation, damaged game files, a save file that broke during writing, or a PC that does not meet the game’s requirements. Start by checking compatibility, updating Windows, Steam and your GPU driver, then use Steam’s file-verification tool. If crashes began after a power loss or forced shutdown while saving, restore the backup save with Steam Cloud temporarily disabled.

The symptom and timing matter. A white screen before the menu points to a launch, driver or rendering problem; a crash immediately after loading a run points more strongly to a damaged save; a crash after a long session calls for both graphics-stability checks and temperature or power checks.

Pattern What it suggests First priority
Closes before the main menu Driver, missing or damaged files, overlay conflict, or unsupported hardware Updates, requirements check, file verification
White screen, then desktop Launch or rendering failure; the exact cause is not established by available reports Driver and file checks, then a clean diagnostic test
Crashes while loading a run or after a particular act Possible damaged save data Back up the folder and test the backup save
Crashes only after extended play Graphics-driver instability, overheating, memory pressure, or an in-game trigger Disable overclocks and overlays, monitor temperatures, verify files
Windows restarts or shows a blue screen System-level hardware, power, driver, or Windows fault rather than a normal game crash Check Windows reliability and hardware stability; do not repeatedly relaunch the game

Also note whether other games fail. If only Inscryption is affected, game files or its save are more likely. If several games crash, prioritize Windows, GPU drivers, temperatures, power delivery and unstable overclocks.

Check the Windows requirements

Steam’s 2021 listing specifies the following Windows requirements. They are a baseline, not a guarantee that every configuration will be stable.

Component Minimum Recommended
Processor Intel Core i5-760 or AMD Athlon II X4 645 Intel Core i5-3470 or AMD FX-4350
Memory 4 GB RAM 8 GB RAM
Graphics GeForce GTX 550 Ti or Radeon HD 6850 GeForce GTX 1050 or Radeon RX 460
Storage 3 GB available space 3 GB available space

To check your configuration, press Windows, type System Information, and open it to see the processor and installed memory. Press Windows + R, enter dxdiag, and open the Display tab for the GPU and driver details. Keep more than the stated 3 GB free on the game drive so Windows has room for updates, shader caches and temporary files.

Run the standard software fixes in order

  1. Exit and relaunch Steam completely

Choose Steam > Exit, wait for the Steam process to close, then start Steam again. A simple restart can finish a pending client update or clear a stuck process. Do not just close the window if Steam remains in the notification area.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  2. Install pending Windows and Steam updates

In Windows, open Settings > Windows Update, install available updates, and restart when requested. Steam normally updates when it starts; allow that update to finish before launching Inscryption.

  3. Update the graphics driver

Install the current driver offered for your exact GPU model from its manufacturer’s support channel, then restart Windows. A community crash report describes repeated failures that stopped after an Nvidia driver update; treat that as useful evidence, not a universal promise. If the problem started immediately after a driver update, a clean reinstall or a rollback to the previous stable driver can be a reasonable diagnostic step.

  4. Verify the game files

In Steam, open Library, right-click Inscryption, choose Properties, open Installed Files, and select Verify integrity of game files. Let the process finish and allow Steam to reacquire any files it reports as damaged or missing. Launch the game once after verification before changing several other settings.

  5. Test without common overlays and capture hooks

Temporarily disable Steam Overlay for Inscryption and close recording, frame-rate, RGB or hardware-monitoring tools. Also return any GPU or CPU overclock to its default profile. These are general Windows diagnostics rather than Inscryption-specific fixes, but they remove software that can hook into rendering or destabilize a marginal system. Re-enable one tool at a time after the game is stable.

Repair a crash that began after a failed save

An abrupt shutdown, power interruption or forced close while the game is writing can damage the save. A pinned Steam Community guide by moderator Secundus specifically describes this failure mode and provides a backup-save recovery procedure.

Back up the folder first

Do not delete or overwrite anything until you have a copy. In Steam, right-click Inscryption, select Manage > Browse Local Files. Close the game and Steam, then copy the entire Inscryption folder to another location such as your Documents folder or an external drive. This copy is your fallback if the recovery does not work.

Restore the backup save

  1. Start Steam, but do not launch Inscryption.
  2. Temporarily turn off Steam Cloud for the game. The exact control is available from Inscryption’s Steam properties under the cloud setting.
  3. Right-click Inscryption and choose Manage > Browse Local Files.
  4. Find SaveFile.gwsave and move it outside the game folder. Do not permanently delete it until testing is complete.
  5. Find SaveFile-Backup.gwsave and rename it to SaveFile.gwsave. Keep the original extension exactly as shown.
  6. Launch Inscryption and test the menu and a short session. Quit normally so the game can write a fresh save.
  7. Only after a successful launch and normal quit should you re-enable Steam Cloud. If Cloud offers a conflict, choose the local file you just tested rather than blindly restoring the older cloud copy.

The backup may be older than your latest progress. That trade-off is safer than repeatedly loading a damaged file, and the original files remain recoverable from the folder backup.

Use a full save reset only as a last resort

If the backup also crashes and you have accepted the possibility of losing progress, the pinned guide describes deleting the save and then pressing Shift+A+S at the menu to open chapter select. Chapter select is only a rough way to restore access; it can remove normal progression and does not recreate every state from a previous run.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Make a dated copy of the entire Inscryption folder first.
  • Keep Steam Cloud disabled while testing the reset, or the old cloud save may return.
  • Use the reset only after file verification and backup restoration have failed.
  • If the reset fixes launch but your old save does not, the evidence points to save corruption rather than a general Windows incompatibility.

When the game shows a white screen or will not launch

Community reports include a previously working installation that began showing a white screen and closing. The report raised suspicion about Windows 11 or a recent patch, but it did not establish either as the cause, and reinstalling did not resolve that particular case. Therefore, do not assume that changing Windows versions, waiting for a patch or reinstalling alone will fix every white-screen failure.

  1. Complete the Steam, Windows and GPU-driver updates and file verification described above.
  2. Disable overlays, capture software and aggressive overclocks for one test launch.
  3. Disconnect unnecessary displays or adapters temporarily and test the primary monitor at its normal resolution.
  4. Check whether another Windows user account can launch the game. A different account can help distinguish a damaged profile or permission issue from a system-wide problem.
  5. If the failure persists, record the exact white-screen behavior, Windows version, GPU and driver version, and whether the backup save changed anything before contacting the developer.

If Inscryption crashes after playing for a while

Long-session crashes deserve a different set of checks from an immediate startup failure. Watch GPU and CPU temperatures with a trusted monitor, confirm that fans are operating, and test with all overclocks disabled. A system that reboots, freezes the entire PC or shows a blue screen is not experiencing an ordinary game-process crash; investigate Windows reliability history, GPU-driver errors, memory stability and power delivery.

If only Inscryption exits to the desktop after a repeatable action, note the act, room, card interaction or menu that precedes it. Verify files again and test a different save. A crash tied to one save but not a new game points toward data; a crash at the same action across saves points toward a reproducible game or driver issue that support can investigate.

Collect useful details before contacting support

Daniel Mullins Games is listed as the developer, with official support at [email protected]. A concise, reproducible report is more useful than saying only that the game “keeps crashing.” Include:

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

  • Windows edition and version, including whether it is Windows 10 or Windows 11.
  • GPU model and installed driver version; include the CPU and amount of RAM.
  • Whether the crash occurs at launch, on the menu, while loading a run, in a particular act, or after extended play.
  • The visible symptom: white screen, freeze, desktop exit, error message, blue screen or whole-PC restart.
  • The exact error text, if any, copied verbatim.
  • Whether Steam and Windows were updated, the graphics driver was updated, and file verification found anything.
  • Whether disabling overlays or overclocks changed the result.
  • Whether moving SaveFile.gwsave and restoring SaveFile-Backup.gwsave changed the behavior.
  • The steps that reproduce the crash, plus the approximate time in the session when it occurs.

These details let support separate a launch/rendering fault from a save-specific fault and avoid repeating steps you have already tried.

What the available evidence can—and cannot—establish

There is no authoritative crash-rate statistic or independent prevalence study establishing one universal cause for Inscryption crashes on Windows. The documented material consists of Steam’s requirements, a pinned moderator recovery guide and individual community incidents. That is enough to support the decision tree above, but not enough to claim that Windows 11, a particular patch, reinstalling, or one driver version is responsible for every player.
