The Indian Navy commissioned INS Mangrol at Naval Dockyard, Mumbai, on 12 October 2026. Built by Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL), the shallow-water anti-submarine warfare craft is intended to help detect and counter underwater threats near India’s coast. Its publicly identified systems include Abhay hull-mounted sonar, lightweight torpedoes, an indigenous anti-submarine rocket launcher and the Maareech Advanced Torpedo Decoy System.
What INS Mangrol is designed to do
Mangrol is the third Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW-SWC) built by CSL at Kochi, and the third vessel in an eight-ship CSL-built series, according to the Ministry of Defence commissioning announcement. Its role is coastal and shallow-water anti-submarine warfare: finding and countering submarine threats in waters where larger warships can face operational limitations.

The Ministry says the craft can operate with maritime patrol aircraft, helicopters and other warships. Its stated wider mission set includes underwater surveillance and low-intensity maritime operations. Separate Ministry delivery material also lists search and rescue and mine-laying or mine-warfare capability; these are capabilities described in official releases, not evidence of a particular deployment.
Sonar, weapons and propulsion
The commissioning announcement identifies four systems: Abhay hull-mounted sonar, lightweight torpedoes, an indigenous anti-submarine rocket launcher and the Maareech Advanced Torpedo Decoy System. The sonar supports underwater detection, while the listed weapons and decoy system form part of the craft’s anti-submarine equipment. The Ministry’s public descriptions do not specify detection range, torpedo model, weapon performance or decoy operating parameters.

The ship has three diesel engines and waterjet propulsion. The Ministry says this arrangement gives Mangrol high manoeuvrability in shallow waters; it does not publish a speed figure in the cited announcement.
How indigenous is INS Mangrol?
The Ministry of Defence’s 9 October commissioning announcement says the craft has “over 80%” indigenous content. Its separate August delivery release describes the share as “approximately 80%.” These are the formulations used in the respective releases, rather than a single exact percentage.

The name and the earlier INS Mangrol
The vessel is named after Mangrol, a coastal town and fishing harbour in Gujarat’s Junagadh district. The commissioning release says it carries forward the name of the earlier INS Mangrol (M85), a minesweeper that served until 7 April 2004.

What has not been publicly specified
The cited Ministry releases do not provide detailed acoustic detection range, speed, endurance, dimensions, crew size, a torpedo model, actual deployment assignment or an independent assessment of combat effectiveness. Those details should not be inferred from the ship’s class or its listed equipment.
