Terraform or Pulumi can manage the infrastructure around a screenshot API, but that does not mean they manage the screenshot service itself. Your IaC can provision the application that makes requests, its secret storage, network rules, deployment configuration, and any output storage you control. The application then calls the screenshot provider over HTTPS. Treat the provider’s account, API settings, and billing as IaC-managed only if that vendor documents a supported provider or integration.
How do I use Terraform or Pulumi with a screenshot API?
Use the screenshot API as an HTTP dependency in your application. Use IaC to declare the resources your application needs to call it safely and reliably. The dividing line is important: a Terraform provider or Pulumi provider translates resource declarations into operations against a supported service API, but the existence of that general mechanism does not establish a provider for a particular screenshot vendor.
- IaC layer: declare and deploy your application runtime, secret store, permissions, networking, monitoring, and any storage or queues you operate.
- Application layer: make authenticated HTTPS requests to the screenshot API, handle its response, and decide what to do with the resulting image or PDF.
- Vendor account layer: manage keys, account settings, quotas, and billing through the vendor’s documented controls unless the vendor explicitly supports managing them with your IaC tool.
Terraform documents providers as integrations for external APIs and managed services. Pulumi documents providers that create, read, update, and delete resources, plus dynamic providers and an option to use compatible Terraform/OpenTofu providers. These capabilities describe what the tools can do in general; they do not prove that a given screenshot service exposes a supported provider.
Check for a real provider before declaring vendor settings as resources
Before writing a resource block for a screenshot API, verify that the vendor publishes and supports a provider for your IaC tool and the specific settings you want to manage. A community package, an HTTP data source, or a shell command that calls a vendor endpoint is not automatically equivalent to a maintained provider with documented lifecycle behavior. Confirm which operations are supported, how state and secrets are handled, and what happens when a resource is changed or deleted.
#1 Best Overall
The vendor documentation reviewed for ScreenshotOne and Urlbox describes HTTP request workflows, not native Terraform or Pulumi providers for managing their service configuration. That is not proof that no third-party provider exists; it means you should verify current availability and support before relying on one. If you cannot establish a provider, keep account administration separate from the IaC-managed application infrastructure.
What does the integration look like?
A typical flow is: an application receives a permitted capture request, retrieves its API credential from a protected runtime secret, sends an HTTPS request to the screenshot service, and then processes the response. Depending on the service and workflow, the application may receive an image or PDF directly, poll or receive an asynchronous result, or store output separately.
- Declare the surrounding infrastructure. Use Terraform or Pulumi to configure the application runtime, access to a secret store, and any storage or queue needed for the workflow.
- Supply credentials at runtime. Put the API key in a managed secret store or environment variable supplied by the deployment platform. Do not commit it to source control or place it in public browser code.
- Call the service from the application. Send the URL or other supported input, rendering options, and authentication over HTTPS. Validate and authorize user-supplied targets before making a request.
- Handle success and failure deliberately. Check the response, enforce timeouts, and decide whether to return, store, or retry the output. For asynchronous workflows, use the vendor’s documented completion mechanism.
- Deploy changes through your IaC workflow. Keep infrastructure changes reviewable and separate from application-level API behavior and vendor-account changes that your provider does not manage.
Why keep the API call out of Terraform resource creation?
Infrastructure tools are designed to manage declared resources and their lifecycle. A screenshot request is usually an application operation: it may be user-triggered, repeated frequently, or produce a new artifact each time. Turning each capture into an IaC resource can confuse deployment state with application activity and may put sensitive inputs or outputs into IaC state. Use an IaC resource only when the provider explicitly models a durable service resource you intend to manage.

What varies between screenshot APIs?
Do not compare services solely by whether they can return an image. Match the API’s documented inputs, outputs, rendering controls, authentication, execution mode, and storage behavior to the workflow you need. Vendor-described capabilities below are not independent performance test results.

|---|---|---|---|
| ScreenshotNeo | One GET request with a URL; the service is also available as an MCP server for AI agents. | PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF; 63 options include full-page capture, CSS-selector element capture, device and viewport settings, dark mode, PDF settings, custom CSS and JavaScript, and request blocking. | Response headers identify page verdict and billing; clean shots are billed, while bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing. Supports async jobs with signed webhooks and bulk capture. |
| ScreenshotOne | Documented GET and POST requests; URL, HTML, and Markdown inputs are described. | Multiple output formats and configurable response or storage behavior are documented, along with capture options. | Use HTTPS. Its guidance says to protect the API key like a password, keep it out of source control, and use an environment variable or secrets manager. |
| Urlbox | Documented render links and POST workflows; URL or HTML inputs are described. | Rendering and extraction outputs are documented, as are full-page and element-specific capture. | Both synchronous and asynchronous workflows are described. Urlbox documents a secret key for authenticated render links and POST API authentication; storage choices are part of the integration decision. |
For a requirements review, check whether the vendor supports the exact input type and output format, full-page or element capture, synchronous or asynchronous execution, credential approach, output storage, viewport behavior, and the rendering options your application depends on. A feature listed by a vendor establishes documented availability, not comparative speed or reliability.
When do full-page, element, and asynchronous capture matter?
Full-page capture suits archiving or preview workflows that need content beyond the initial viewport; element capture is useful when the artifact should contain a component rather than a whole page. Asynchronous processing can fit longer or bulk jobs better than holding a request open, but it means your application must also handle job completion and delivery. Choose based on the required artifact and interaction model, not on the assumption that every service implements these modes identically.
Rank #3
How should you protect credentials and rendered data?
ScreenshotOne explicitly recommends HTTPS and keeping keys in environment variables or a secrets manager rather than source control. HTTP does not encrypt API keys, authorization headers, cookies, or other sensitive information in transit. Urlbox documents a secret key for authenticated render links and POST authentication. Apply the same basic discipline to any provider: avoid exposing credentials in public frontend code or in public URLs unless using the vendor’s documented secure signing method appropriately.
- Restrict access to the secret to the application identity that needs it; do not print it in logs or error messages.
- Keep capture requests behind server-side authorization when inputs or credentials should not be controlled by an untrusted browser client.
- Validate destination URLs and limit what your application is allowed to render. A screenshot service can fetch third-party URLs, so an unrestricted capture endpoint can expose data or create abuse risks.
- Decide how long to retain screenshots, where they are stored, who can retrieve them, and whether the original page may contain personal or confidential information.
- Review the vendor’s authentication, storage, and data-handling documentation for the particular service and account you use; IaC alone does not settle those policies.
Should you run your own screenshot service or use an API?
The reviewed documentation establishes hosted API workflows for ScreenshotOne and Urlbox, along with the ScreenshotNeo API and MCP server. It does not provide a measured comparison with self-hosting, nor a basis for declaring one service universally faster or cheaper. A hosted API means your application integrates with a remote service; self-hosting means you take responsibility for the browser runtime, updates, scaling, security, and operational behavior. Compare those responsibilities against your workload and control requirements rather than assuming IaC eliminates the work of operating a browser fleet.

How do you troubleshoot the integration?
- Terraform or Pulumi cannot find a resource for the screenshot vendor: do not invent a resource type or assume a generic provider manages account settings. Confirm vendor support and provider compatibility; otherwise manage your own infrastructure with IaC and make screenshot calls from application code.
- Authentication fails: check that the deployed workload has access to the correct secret, that the request uses the vendor’s documented authentication location, and that the secret was not accidentally altered or exposed. Rotate a key if it may have entered source control or logs.
- The request or returned content is exposed: confirm HTTPS end to end and review whether a key, cookie, authorization header, or sensitive destination URL is visible in client-side code, logs, or public links.
- The response is not the artifact expected: verify the input URL or HTML, output format, viewport, page-versus-element target, and any wait or rendering settings. These controls differ by service; use the options documented by the selected vendor.
- The request times out or the workflow stalls: distinguish a synchronous request timeout from an asynchronous job that has not completed. Apply an appropriate client timeout and follow the vendor’s documented asynchronous completion flow when using one.
- Output is missing after a successful request: check whether the workflow returns output directly or stores it elsewhere, and verify the application’s storage permissions and retrieval logic.
- Unexpected usage or costs appear: inspect application retries, scheduled capture frequency, cache behavior, and the provider’s billing and usage controls. Do not assume IaC state represents screenshot request volume.
Or skip the browser setup
If your application needs screenshots but you do not want to operate browser infrastructure, ScreenshotNeo is an API and MCP server made by Yorker Media. One GET request can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. It can accept consent banners like a visitor and remove 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and responses include X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.
cURL example, targeting a public page; keep the API key private. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options and response behavior.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Python equivalent:
import requests
r = requests.get(
"https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot",
params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"},
timeout=90,
)
r.raise_for_status()
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js equivalent:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
if (!res.ok) throw new Error(`Screenshot request failed: ${res.status}`);
await import('node:fs/promises').then(fs => fs.writeFile('shot.webp', Buffer.from(await res.arrayBuffer())));
Beyond the one-call API, ScreenshotNeo supports custom CSS and JavaScript, selector waits and clicks, cookies and custom headers, device presets, image resizing, caching with a chosen TTL, signed links for public image tags, bulk capture of 100 URLs per call, usage API, and an OpenAPI spec. Its parameter names also work with those used by other screenshot APIs to make switching easier. Every feature is on every plan; yearly billing gives two months free.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can Terraform or Pulumi manage a screenshot API key?
They can manage access to a secret store and application configuration around a key. Whether they can create or rotate the vendor-side key itself depends on a documented provider or API integration from that vendor.
Does a screenshot API call belong in a Terraform apply?
Usually not: captures are application requests rather than durable infrastructure resources. Keep capture execution in application code unless a supported provider explicitly models the resource you need.
Can a screenshot API render a private page?
That depends on the provider’s supported authentication and request options and on how your application supplies credentials. Confirm the vendor’s documentation and avoid sending secrets or private content to destinations you do not control.
