Infrared camouflage that sticks usually means an adhesive-backed wrap film, not a fabric scrim or a camouflage net. INTERMAT describes its CHAMELEON SKIN as a multilayer cast film for wrapping specialist military equipment, but that manufacturer description is not independent proof that the product conceals every target from every infrared sensor.
The key question is what kind of infrared signature the material is designed to affect. Near-infrared and short-wave infrared concerns differ from the thermal signatures seen in mid-wave and long-wave infrared. A claim that a film works in one band or test setup does not establish performance in another.

What is adhesive infrared camouflage film?
It is a flexible film with an adhesive backing, applied to an object’s surface as a wrap. INTERMAT describes CHAMELEON SKIN as a multilayer cast adhesive-backed anti-thermal/IR film intended for full wraps and specialist military equipment. Its product page is a manufacturer source; the evidence cited here does not establish an independent performance figure for this product or verify current program availability. INTERMAT’s CHAMELEON SKIN product page also says its products are restricted to military, law-enforcement, and special-forces sales and subject to export permits.
“Infrared” is not one uniform detection method. Sensors may register reflected radiation in near-infrared (NIR) or short-wave infrared (SWIR), or radiation associated with an object’s temperature in mid-wave infrared (MWIR) or long-wave infrared (LWIR). Saab’s overview distinguishes these signature-management concerns and describes thermal cameras as detecting radiation from objects in MWIR or LWIR. Saab’s ULCAS overview provides that distinction.

- VViViD car wrap films conform to contours and can stretch up to 200% (30% or less is suggested for optimal performance), making installation a simple process, even for beginners.
- Can be easily applied to any non-porous surface with only a heat gun and squeegee. Easily repositioned or removed with no risk of chipping factory paint.
- VVIVID vinyls feature air channel release technology, allowing you to smooth it onto a surface and eliminate air bubbles for a perfect finish.
- Installs in a fraction of the time it would take to apply a new paint job, and at a fraction of the price. Long life span, up to 10 years indoor and 5-7 years outdoor.
Thermal management can involve more than changing a surface’s apparent color: material design may affect emissivity, insulation, reflection, convection, or radiative cooling. A low signature in one wavelength region or against one background does not prove concealment under different conditions. FOI’s report describes low thermal-wavelength signatures and wavelength-dependent reflectance, including surfaces designed to reflect selectively in atmospheric windows. FOI report FOI-R–1042–SE frames the objective as reducing, rather than eliminating, a platform’s thermal signature.
How film differs from scrim, nets, and coatings
| Form | What the cited source establishes | What to compare |
|---|---|---|
| Adhesive-backed wrap film | INTERMAT describes a multilayer cast film for wrapping specialist assets. Manufacturer product page | Supported wavelength bands; substrate compatibility; emissivity or reflectance behavior; application and removal; durability; and whether evidence is independent or vendor-provided. |
| Modular scrim or gear wrap | TacDefence lists InfraScrim as a dual-sided textile strip for wrapping or weaving into weapons and tactical gear. It is textile, not adhesive film. TacDefence InfraScrim listing | Attachment method, size and weight, spectral claims, visual or thermal use, and the source of performance evidence. |
| Camouflage net | Saab describes ULCAS as a lightweight, flexible multispectral net for static concealment. Saab ULCAS overview | Coverage area, background adaptation, spectral bands, portability, and deployment context. |
| Coating or paint | FOI discusses IR-reflective pigments for low-emissivity camouflage paints; INTERMAT also markets anti-thermal coatings. FOI report; INTERMAT product page | Permanent or removable application, supported spectrum, substrate preparation, maintenance, and evidence provenance. |
These forms solve different practical problems. A film adheres to a surface, a scrim is attached or woven around gear, a net covers a larger area, and a coating is applied to the substrate. The category name alone does not tell you which wavelengths a product addresses or how it performs.

- Experience the XPO Camo series vinyl for a rugged and authentic camo look!
- Installation is a simple process, even for beginners. Can be easily applied to any non-porous surface with only a heat gun and squeegee. Conforms to contours and bends easily. Never worry about bubbles or creases.
- Features acrylic-based, liftable, slideable and repositionable air-release adhesive, sticks with pressure alone and peels off with minimal effort.
- Extremely durable, scratch and grime resistant surface, lasts 5-7 years outdoors without fading or cracking.
- Our vinyl is marine safe and can be used on interior and exterior surfaces. Also suitable for architectural applications.
Does infrared camouflage film work?
Some materials can measurably change infrared-related properties in defined tests. That is not the same as proving that a particular commercial wrap will conceal a particular object in the field. The outcome depends on the material, target, sensor band, background, weather, geometry, and test conditions.

A 2025 paper in ACS Applied Polymer Materials reports that its experimental multilayer adhesive TPU film could have emissivity tuned from 0.05 to 0.64 by varying the thickness of its top PMMA layer. In the paper’s outdoor experiments, its film had a saliency score of 0.20, compared with 0.45 for the study’s conventional visible camouflage and 0.41 for its uniform low-emissivity film. These are results for the paper’s materials and setup, not measurements of CHAMELEON SKIN or a general field-performance guarantee. The 2025 ACS Applied Polymer Materials study.

A 2021 Nature Communications study reports a different experimental multispectral device. At an input power density of 2500 W·m⁻², it measured an 8.4°C reduction in inner temperature, a 5.9°C reduction in surface temperature, and decreases of 53.4% in mid-wave and 13.0% in long-wave infrared signal, compared with chromium film under the study’s specified conditions. Those measurements belong to that device and experimental comparison; they do not validate commercial adhesive wraps generally. The 2021 Nature Communications study.
For CHAMELEON SKIN specifically, the cited manufacturer page makes product and reduction claims, but no standalone independent performance figure is established by the cited evidence. Do not transfer measurements from the separate 2025 experimental film to this commercial product.

What to check before choosing a wrap
- Which band? Ask whether the claim concerns NIR, SWIR, MWIR, LWIR, or a stated combination. “Infrared” without a band is too broad to compare products.
- What was measured? Look for the sensor or wavelength range, target and background, environmental conditions, comparison material, and whether the result came from an independent test or the seller.
- What is the attachment form? Confirm that you need adhesive film rather than textile scrim, a net, or paint. A gear wrap listed as a textile strip is not a substitute for an adhesive film.
- Will it suit the surface? Confirm substrate compatibility, coverage, application and removal method, and durability for the intended use. Do not assume a film will adhere safely to every finish or survive every environment.
- What is the procurement context? INTERMAT says its products are restricted to military, law-enforcement, and special-forces sales and subject to export permits.
