Inferior Conjunction: Venus on October 23–24, 2026—Timing and Viewing Guide

Venus reaches inferior conjunction in the early hours of October 24, 2026. The best-supported timing is about 03:30–03:45 UTC (12:44 JST in the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan calendar, equivalent to 03:44 UTC; another computed calendar gives approximately 03:32 UTC). The event falls during the October 23–24 observing night in some time zones. At conjunction, Venus lies between Earth and the Sun, only about 6.5–6.6 degrees from the Sun in the sky, so it disappears into solar glare rather than becoming a naked-eye spectacle.

What Venus’s inferior conjunction means

Venus is an inferior planet because its orbit is inside Earth’s orbit. At inferior conjunction, Venus passes between Earth and the Sun in orbital geometry. As seen from Earth, the planets share the same ecliptic longitude; the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan records the alignment as Δλ = 0°.

This is not the same as a transit of Venus. Venus’s orbit is tilted relative to Earth’s, so it normally passes above or below the Sun’s visible disk. A transit occurs only when the alignment also happens near one of the points where the two orbital planes intersect.

When is the 2026 conjunction?

Reference Published event time Equivalent or qualification
National Astronomical Observatory of Japan October 24, 2026, 12:44 JST 03:44 UTC; the calendar identifies Venus at inferior conjunction with the Sun
Asteria Star computed calendar Approximately October 24, 2026, 03:32 UTC Computed value; rounded ephemeris methods can differ by several minutes

For general observing plans, use about 03:30–03:45 UTC on October 24. Convert that interval to your local time. In locations west of UTC, the moment may occur on the evening of October 23; in locations east of UTC, it occurs on October 24. The exact instant is less important for casual observing than Venus’s position relative to the Sun over the surrounding days.

Why Venus cannot be seen at the exact moment

At conjunction, Venus is approximately 6.5–6.6° south of the Sun. That small angular separation places it in intense daylight and atmospheric glare. A 2026 visibility calendar lists Venus at 6.5° elongation and identifies October 19–28 as a period when it is within 8.5° of the Sun, or “combust.” Another observing account describes Venus as effectively unobservable at the exact conjunction.

Latitude, a clear and unobstructed horizon, local twilight, atmospheric transparency and the observer’s experience all affect whether Venus can be detected on nearby dates. The conjunction itself is therefore a calculated alignment, not a display that most people can watch directly.

What Venus looks like before conjunction

As Venus approaches the Sun from the evening sky, its illuminated phase shrinks to an extremely thin crescent while its apparent disk grows larger. That combination is a consequence of viewing the planet from the same side of its orbit as the Sun: less of its sunlit hemisphere faces Earth, but Venus is physically closer to us.

Using optical equipment

Experienced observers sometimes try to catch the thin crescent with a telescope shortly before or after conjunction. This is a specialized observation, not a beginner target. The crescent can be difficult to acquire against bright twilight, and optical alignment errors can put the Sun in the field of view.

Non-negotiable eye safety

Never point binoculars or a telescope toward the Sun, or sweep near it while searching for Venus, unless the instrument has a suitable, certified front-mounted solar filter designed for that optical system and you know how to use it. Improvised filters, eyepiece filters and ordinary sunglasses are unsafe. Direct or magnified sunlight can cause permanent eye injury before pain provides a warning.

A safer choice is to skip the exact conjunction and follow Venus as it moves farther from the Sun in the dawn sky after the event.

When Venus becomes a morning star again

The October conjunction ends Venus’s evening apparition. In the following weeks, Venus reappears before sunrise and becomes a morning object as its angular distance from the Sun increases. The first naked-eye sighting date depends on your latitude, horizon and local twilight, so there is no single worldwide visibility date.

Timeanddate lists Venus’s next greatest western elongation for January 3, 2027. That elongation marks the later, more favorable morning-star phase, when Venus stands much farther west of the Sun in the predawn sky. EarthSky likewise describes Venus returning to the dawn sky during the weeks after inferior conjunction.

Practical observing plan

  1. Choose the goal. If you want a safe, simple sight, plan to watch Venus transition from the evening sky to the dawn sky. If you want to attempt the thin crescent, recognize that it requires optical skill and strict solar safety.
  2. Check your local circumstances. Use the October 24, 03:30–03:45 UTC interval as the reference, then check your local date, sunrise or sunset, horizon obstructions and forecast transparency.
  3. Observe away from the exact alignment. Venus is most practical to follow on dates when its separation from the Sun has begun to increase, not at the calculated conjunction minute.
  4. Use only approved solar equipment for optical searches. Inspect a certified front-mounted filter before every use and stop immediately if the Sun enters or approaches the field of view.
  5. Track the morning apparition. In the weeks afterward, look low in the eastern dawn sky, allowing the sky to brighten enough to identify the horizon while keeping the Sun below the horizon.

How often this alignment occurs

Successive inferior conjunctions of Venus are separated by about 584 days, or roughly 19.5 months. The interval reflects Venus’s faster orbit and Earth’s motion around the Sun. Because the orbital planes are inclined, these recurring conjunctions do not usually produce transits.

What to expect on October 23–24

  • The exact conjunction occurs in daylight or twilight for many locations and is not a naked-eye event.
  • Venus is near the Sun—about 6.5–6.6° away—so ordinary binocular or telescope viewing is hazardous without proper solar filtration.
  • The most noticeable change is Venus’s shift from an evening object before conjunction to a dawn object afterward.
  • The thin crescent may be visible to skilled observers with safe technique, but local conditions determine whether it can be detected.
