Neither indoor nor outdoor walking is universally better for fitness. The better choice is the one you can do safely and consistently at a useful pace. Both can help you meet activity guidelines; treadmill and outdoor walking do differ in some measured ways, but current evidence does not establish that one produces better long-term fitness results for everyone.
What research says about indoor and outdoor walking
Treadmill and overground walking are not identical
A 2024 systematic review and meta-analysis compared motorized treadmill walking with overground walking at similar speeds in healthy adults ages 18–65. It included 55 studies and 1,005 participants, with a literature search through September 2022. In the study conditions, treadmill walking was associated with greater relative oxygen consumption and cadence, as well as shorter stride and step lengths. Treadmill design, stability, and familiarity may influence these differences. They are measured responses, not evidence that treadmill walking yields better real-world fitness over months or years. Outdoor exercise may have additional benefits, but the evidence is limited
A 2023 systematic review of longitudinal trials compared outdoor and indoor exercise for psychological health, physical health, and activity behavior. It included 10 trials and 343 participants. Of 99 comparisons, 25 were statistically significant, and all 25 favored outdoor exercise. However, the studies varied in their outcomes and protocols, risk of bias was generally high, and the review characterized the evidence as limited. The findings suggest outdoor exercise may offer added benefits for some outcomes, but they do not prove that outdoor walking is universally better. Read the review.
These studies do not provide a reliable answer to which setting will improve the same person’s fitness more over the long term. A laboratory difference during a walk is not the same as a lasting training advantage.

How much walking counts toward fitness goals?
For adults, the CDC recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity each week, or 75 minutes of vigorous activity, or an equivalent combination. It also recommends muscle-strengthening activity on two or more days each week. The recommendation is about how much activity you do and its intensity—not whether you do it indoors or outdoors. Brisk walking is one example of moderate-intensity activity. See the CDC adult activity guidelines.
NIDDK describes brisk walking as a pace of 3 miles per hour or faster and notes that you can build activity up gradually. That pace is a useful reference, not a requirement to hit immediately. If you have been inactive, start at a manageable level and increase duration and frequency over time. See NIDDK’s activity guidance.

Do not treat 10,000 steps as a required threshold. NIH notes that health benefits can accrue below that commonly cited goal; step counts do not determine whether indoor or outdoor walking is superior. Read the NIH summary.
Choosing a setting that works for you
| Factor | Indoor walking | Outdoor walking |
|---|---|---|
| Weather and schedule | A treadmill or indoor venue can make walking less dependent on weather. Some indoor venues also offer predictable conditions. | Weather, daylight, heat, and cold can affect when and how comfortably you walk. Clothing and sun protection may need to change with conditions. |
| Route and environment | A treadmill lets you set a steady pace. Indoor venues may offer lighting, restrooms, and places to pause. | Surfaces, traffic, lighting, personal security, and access to places to rest vary by route. |
| Variety and experience | A treadmill provides a repeatable setting, although its mechanics differ from overground walking. | Changing surroundings may make a walk more enjoyable or support mood for some people; long-term evidence for added benefits remains limited. |
| Equipment and cost | A treadmill requires equipment, space, and expense. Walking in an indoor public venue may be available at little or no cost. | Walking does not require specialized equipment, though suitable shoes and weather-appropriate clothing are practical considerations. |
| A useful personal test | Can you walk regularly, safely, and at a sustainable pace in a convenient indoor setting? | Can you walk regularly on a safe, accessible route in conditions you can manage? |
A CDC scoping review found that mall walking could offer a safe, accessible, and affordable option for middle-aged and older adults, with potential physical, social, and emotional benefits. The review also noted that the underlying studies were limited and weakly designed, so this supports considering an indoor venue when it removes a practical barrier—not treating it as a proven superior approach. Safety and access matter more than the setting label
- Choose a route or indoor space where you feel secure and can walk without avoidable hazards. For outdoor walks, NIDDK recommends looking for safe, well-lit places where other people are around.
- Dress for the weather, use sun protection when needed, and stay hydrated on outdoor walks.
- Wear comfortable, well-fitting walking shoes with support. New or specialized gear is not a prerequisite for choosing either setting.
- If you have been inactive, begin slowly and build duration and frequency gradually.
- Stop and seek help for warning signs such as pressure in the chest, neck, shoulder, or arm; extreme shortness of breath; dizziness; or feeling sick. Discuss persistent activity-related pain in your joints, feet, ankles, or legs with a health professional.
These precautions follow NIDDK’s guidance on being active.

When choosing between settings, compare four practical factors:
Rank #4
- ABZORB HEEL CUSHIONING - IMEVA midsole with ABZORB heel pad absorbs impact and provides added cushioning for all-day comfort during training and everyday wear
- SUEDE LEATHER UPPER - Quality suede upper delivers a classic, durable look with supportive structure that molds comfortably to your foot over time
- LACE-UP CLOSURE - Traditional lace-up design allows you to adjust the fit for maximum comfort and a secure feel during workouts and daily activities
- CUSHIONED FOOTBED - Lightly cushioned footbed provides an extra layer of soft comfort underfoot, keeping you supported through long days on your feet
- DURABLE OUTSOLE - Sturdy outsole construction offers reliable traction and long-lasting durability on gym floors, sidewalks, and everyday surfaces
- Time and effort: Which option makes it easier to accumulate weekly activity at a moderate or vigorous intensity?
- Safety and access: Which route or venue is realistically available and comfortable for you?
- Reliability: Which option fits your schedule and is less likely to be disrupted by weather or other conditions?
- Enjoyment and consistency: Which setting are you more likely to return to regularly?
These are practical decision factors, not a ranking of proven health effects. An outdoor route that is pleasant and safe may suit you; if weather, mobility, security, or convenience gets in the way, an indoor route or treadmill may help you keep walking. Alternating between the two is also reasonable. The available evidence does not show that you need to buy a treadmill or that either setting guarantees greater weight loss or fitness gains.
