Indie Cosmic-Horror Games to Play After Penguin Colony’s Penguin-Eye View

If Penguin Colony appealed to you because it turns Antarctic exploration and Lovecraftian dread into a story seen from a penguin’s perspective, start with Mountains of Madness. Its premise is the closest match: an Antarctic expedition in which you play geologist William Dyer, explicitly tied to H. P. Lovecraft’s At the Mountains of Madness.

For a different mood, choose Gibbous: A Cthulhu Adventure if you want cosmic horror delivered with comedy. Choose Cosmic Fear if you would rather investigate signs of an ancient cosmic presence through a first-person horror-adventure framing. These are premise-based recommendations, not quality rankings: the available descriptions establish setting, tone and narrative setup, but not comparable information about length, difficulty, accessibility or detailed mechanics.

What makes Penguin Colony a distinctive starting point?

The official Steam listing for Penguin Colony presents it as cosmic horror in Antarctica, experienced from a penguin’s perspective. It also describes the game as a re-imagining of At the Mountains of Madness and other stories. Fellow Traveller’s publisher page gives the same broad premise. That combination matters because it joins three elements that are often separated in horror games:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • An extreme environment: Antarctica supplies isolation, hostile conditions and a setting far from ordinary human life.
  • A cosmic-horror tradition: the game draws on the literary idea that humanity can encounter forces too old, vast or incomprehensible to understand.
  • An unusual viewpoint: a penguin’s-eye view changes the emotional scale of an expedition usually told through human scientists, explorers or investigators.

That makes the best follow-up choice depend on which element you want to preserve. If the Antarctic setting and direct Lovecraft connection are the priority, Mountains of Madness is the logical next game. If you mainly want the Cthulhu mythos but are open to a comic tone, Gibbous offers the clearest contrast. If the appeal is uncovering evidence of an ancient presence from a more conventional first-person perspective, Cosmic Fear takes that route.

Availability information for Penguin Colony has appeared inconsistently in search renderings, so check its current official store listing for the live launch or availability status rather than relying on an old date.

The three closest premise-led alternatives

Game Best fit Setting Tone Premise or play framing
Mountains of Madness Readers who want Antarctic isolation and a direct Lovecraft connection Antarctic expedition Not established in the available description You assume the role of geologist William Dyer; the game is based on Lovecraft’s At the Mountains of Madness
Gibbous: A Cthulhu Adventure Players who want cosmic horror with a comic change of mood Not established in the available description Comedy cosmic horror Adventure framing associated with the Cthulhu mythos
Cosmic Fear Players who want an ancient-presence investigation Not established in the available description Lovecraftian horror A first-person horror adventure investigating signs of an ancient cosmic presence

The table deliberately leaves some cells as “not established.” The available official descriptions do not provide a reliable basis for comparing game length, challenge, accessibility options, platforms, combat systems or technical performance. Treat the list as a way to match premises and mood, not as a ranking or buying guide.

1. Mountains of Madness: the closest Antarctic follow-up

Why it matches Penguin Colony

Mountains of Madness is the strongest recommendation when Antarctica itself is the reason you want another game. Its Steam description places you in Antarctica as expedition leader and geologist William Dyer. It also identifies the game as based on Lovecraft’s At the Mountains of Madness, the same literary work that Penguin Colony re-imagines in its own way.

This gives it a more direct thematic bridge than the other two options. You are not merely moving from one supernatural setting to another: you are returning to the Antarctic expedition tradition that defines the source material. The change is in viewpoint and role. Penguin Colony uses a penguin’s perspective; Mountains of Madness puts you in the position of a human scientist leading an expedition.

What to expect from the premise

The evidence supports an expedition-centered setup and a William Dyer role. It does not establish the game’s exact structure, puzzle design, combat, duration or difficulty, so do not assume that a shared literary foundation means identical gameplay. The useful expectation is narrower: Antarctic exploration and a direct relationship to Lovecraft’s novella are central to its identity.

Choose it when…

  • You want the most obvious continuation of an Antarctic cosmic-horror story.
  • You are interested in the human expedition perspective behind the literary source.
  • You want a game whose premise is explicitly connected to At the Mountains of Madness, rather than one that merely uses general Lovecraftian imagery.

2. Gibbous: A Cthulhu Adventure: cosmic horror with a comic tone

Why it is a useful tonal change

A Steam Community description calls Gibbous: A Cthulhu Adventure a comedy cosmic-horror adventure. That single distinction makes it the clearest choice if you like the mythos and strange entities associated with cosmic horror but do not want another relentlessly bleak expedition.

  • Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

Comedy changes how the premise works. Instead of treating every occult discovery only as a source of dread, a comic adventure can use the same broad Cthulhu vocabulary for absurdity, satire or character-based humor. The result is not a closer imitation of Penguin Colony; it is a deliberate shift in emotional register while keeping cosmic-horror ideas in view.

What the description establishes—and what it does not

The available description establishes the comedy and cosmic-horror combination and identifies the game as an adventure. It does not establish its exact setting, playable characters, puzzle count, runtime, accessibility features or platform coverage. Those details can change a purchasing decision, so confirm them on the current store page before buying.

Choose it when…

  • You want Cthulhu-inspired subject matter without committing to a purely oppressive tone.
  • You prefer an adventure format and are comfortable with humor sharing space with horror.
  • You want contrast after an atmospheric Antarctic game rather than another close setting match.

3. Cosmic Fear: an ancient-presence investigation

Why its framing is different

A Steam Community news listing associated with The Land of Pain describes Cosmic Fear as a Lovecraftian horror adventure about investigating signs of an ancient cosmic presence. The same description presents it through a first-person perspective.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

That premise shifts the focus from a named Antarctic expedition to the act of following evidence. The central question is not simply “what is hidden in this frozen landscape?” but “what do these signs reveal about a presence that predates or exceeds human understanding?” For players who want investigation to be the organizing idea, this is the most distinct option in the list.

Keep the recommendation precise

The listing supports the first-person and ancient-presence investigation framing. It does not provide enough information to describe specific mechanics, enemy behavior, map design, length or technical requirements. “First-person” here should be read as the stated perspective, not as a promise of a particular control scheme or action-horror format.

How to choose your next game

Use the following decision path instead of treating the three titles as interchangeable.

Best Value
Anker USB C Hub, 5-in-1 USBC to HDMI Splitter with 4K Display | 85W Max PD, 1 Powered USB-C 5Gbps & 2 Powered USB-A 3.0 5Gbps Data Ports, for MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, Dell and More (Black)
  • 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
  • Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
  • Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
  • HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
  1. Start with the setting. If Antarctica is essential, choose Mountains of Madness. It is the only recommendation whose available description explicitly places the player in an Antarctic expedition.
  2. Decide whether you want tonal continuity or contrast. For a serious continuation of Lovecraftian expedition fiction, stay with Mountains of Madness. For comedy mixed with cosmic horror, choose Gibbous.
  3. Choose your preferred viewpoint. William Dyer’s expedition role points to a named human investigator; Cosmic Fear is described through first-person investigation; Penguin Colony is defined by its unusual penguin perspective.
  4. Separate premise from unverified specifications. None of the available descriptions supports a firm comparison of runtime, difficulty, accessibility, platform compatibility or content warnings. Check each current store page for those practical details.
  5. Confirm availability before planning a purchase. Store information can change, and Penguin Colony has appeared with conflicting date renderings in search results. Use the live official listing for the current status.

The literary connection: is At the Mountains of Madness required reading?

No. Lovecraft’s At the Mountains of Madness is an optional companion, not a prerequisite for playing Penguin Colony or understanding why Mountains of Madness is the closest thematic match.

Reading the novella can still add context. It gives you the Antarctic expedition framework, the sense of scientific discovery turning into existential danger, and the literary source named in both the Penguin Colony descriptions and the Mountains of Madness listing. You can approach it before playing, afterward, or not at all. The games’ premise descriptions are sufficient to explain the connection without requiring prior knowledge.

If you do read it, treat the book as a way to notice shared ideas rather than as a checklist of required references. A game that re-imagines the material may change viewpoint, pacing, characters and emphasis while retaining the broad Antarctic and cosmic-horror foundation.

What this shortlist does not claim

This is a focused list of premise matches, not a universal ranking of indie horror games. The available evidence supports only a few comparisons:

  • Mountains of Madness is the nearest match for Antarctica plus a direct Lovecraft connection.
  • Gibbous: A Cthulhu Adventure is the tonal outlier because it is described as comedy cosmic horror.
  • Cosmic Fear supplies a first-person investigation of signs of an ancient cosmic presence.

It would be misleading to infer from those descriptions which game is longest, scariest, easiest to run, most accessible or best for a particular age group. Those decisions require current product information beyond the premise copy. Check the live listings for supported systems, input requirements, accessibility options, content notices and pricing in your region.

A concise recommendation order

  1. Play Mountains of Madness first if what you want is another Antarctic, Lovecraft-connected expedition.
  2. Pick Gibbous: A Cthulhu Adventure if you want the Cthulhu tradition with comedy rather than an unbroken serious mood.
  3. Try Cosmic Fear if your priority is a first-person investigation into signs of an ancient cosmic presence.

Together, these choices cover the three most useful ways to follow Penguin Colony: preserve its Antarctic literary lineage, change its tone while keeping cosmic horror, or shift toward first-person investigation of an incomprehensible ancient force.
