Indie Game Reviewer’s 2026 selection gathers 14 adventures that range from classic point-and-click puzzles to dialogue-led mysteries, surreal journeys and walking simulators. It is a contributor-curated set of favorites, not a ranked list: the best starting point depends on whether you want to solve puzzles, follow branching choices, explore an unusual world or settle into a character-driven story.
How IGR defines an adventure game
IGR takes a broad view of the genre. Alongside traditional point-and-click games, its selection includes narrative-first experiences and walking simulators, where exploration and story matter more than complex puzzle systems. The list focuses on indie games, while noting three higher-budget examples outside its main selection: Syberia: The World Before, Dispatch and the Life is Strange series. The article acknowledges that some genre purists may question whether Life is Strange counts as an adventure game because it has little puzzle-solving.

For classic point-and-click puzzles
Machinarium (2009)
A wordless adventure from Amanita Design, Machinarium uses stylized 2D art and environmental puzzles instead of spoken dialogue. Its sound and music are also part of the appeal. Choose it if you like working out how objects and surroundings fit together without relying on written instructions.
#1 Best Overall
Dropsy: A Point and Click Hugventure (2015)
Developed by Tendershoot and A Jolly Corpse, and published by Devolver Digital, Dropsy stars a clown whose unsettling appearance contrasts with his desire to connect with people. Pictographs, animals and puzzles carry the story in this wordless adventure, making communication itself part of the experience.
Unavowed (2018)
Wadjet Eye Games’ supernatural investigation mixes dialogue, light puzzle-solving and consequential choices. You select three unlocked characters for each outing; their abilities and perspectives change which options are available. It suits players who want conventional adventure-game problem-solving alongside a story shaped by whom they bring along.
For exploration, unusual worlds and discovery
Outer Wilds (2019)
Mobius Digital’s solar-system mystery centers on exploration and knowledge, with a repeating time cycle shaping how players investigate. IGR includes it as an acknowledged exception to its indie focus, describing it as one of the few AAA titles it considers legitimately an adventure game. It is a fit for players who want discovery and mystery-solving to drive the experience.
Heaven’s Vault (2019)
In inkle Ltd’s archaeological science-fiction adventure, exploring a setting goes hand in hand with translating ancient texts and symbols. Deciphering language is a central puzzle mechanic, while the story remains focused on its characters. Consider it if you enjoy interpreting clues as much as uncovering a world.
Kentucky Route Zero (2013)
Cardboard Computer’s Southern Gothic road trip is surreal and sparsely presented, with mostly straightforward puzzles. Its pull is less about demanding puzzle chains than atmosphere and the journey itself. Greg Costikyan’s brief recommendation in IGR’s article is: “And you should play it.”
Firewatch (2016)
Campo Santo’s wilderness exploration game is narrative-first, and IGR uses it as an example of a walking simulator that fits its inclusive definition of adventure. If you prefer following a story through a place rather than solving elaborate inventory puzzles, this is one of the clearest examples of that approach in the selection.
Rank #3
- Create your ultimate fantasy hero and tell their story by facing challenges and crafting your destiny
- Contains over fully illustrated 150 cards and 24 custom runes.
- From the makers of the hit game, boss Monster.
For stories shaped by choices and characters
The Wolf Among Us (2013)
Telltale’s branching mystery follows Bigby Wolf in a dark, graphic-novel-inspired setting. Player choices affect relationships and consequences, making the appeal a mix of investigation and narrative decisions. Choose it if you want a moody mystery where dialogue and choices matter more than traditional puzzle-solving.

Infinite Fall’s narrative-heavy, horror-tinged coming-of-age story, published by Finji, takes place in Possum Springs. Its concerns include character, small-town decline, mental health and art. The emphasis is on atmosphere and the people in a changing town rather than on a sequence of intricate puzzles.
Neo Cab (2019)
Chance Agency’s narrative-focused game, published by Fellow Traveller, follows a human rideshare driver through passengers’ stories. A mood-tracking wristband is part of its mechanics. It is a natural choice for players drawn to intimate character encounters and dialogue-led storytelling.
Rank #4
Citizen Sleeper (2022)
Jump Over the Age’s text-led science-fiction adventure, published by Fellow Traveller, uses dice allocation to shape character and story progression. Its structure makes decisions and narrative development central. Try it if you enjoy managing limited actions while following a branching story.
I Was a Teenage Exocolonist (2022)
Northway Games’ science-fiction coming-of-age game, published by Finji, combines exploration and role-playing elements with many possible endings. IGR describes the ending count informally as “20-something or more,” not as a precise audited number. It is the pick here for players who want a long-form character story with substantial replay variation.

To the Moon (2011)
Freebird Games’ story follows two time-traveling doctors exploring a dying man’s memories to fulfill his final wish. The premise puts memory and personal history at the center of the adventure, making it a strong option when you want an emotionally focused narrative.
Best Value
For comedy and a lighter kind of puzzle-solving
Thank Goodness You’re Here! (2024)
Coal Supper’s comic exploration game, published by Panic, combines navigation with some puzzle-solving but, according to IGR, no inventory puzzles. The article reports that it won the 2024 BAFTA for Best British Game, received an IGF Seumas McNally Grand Prize nomination and was selected for the Tribeca Festival. Those distinctions are reported by IGR; this article does not independently verify them.
